Google is about to start accepting video content from the public for its Google Video service, a system now in public beta testing that lets anyone search a variety of TV clips by keyword. The service returns excerpts of show transcripts -- grabbed from close-captioning feeds -- and still images captured from the shows' footage, but it doesn't provide actual video clips that users can play back. "In the next few days we're actually going to start taking video submissions from people, and we're not quite sure what we're going to get, but we decided we'd try this experiment," said Larry Page, Google's co-founder and president for products said on Monday at a panel discussion at the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) National Show in San Francisco. A large audience gathered to see Page and other IT and entertainment executives burst into laughter. Page didn't provide any other details of the plan, but Google spokesman Nate Tyler said Monday that more information would be available in a few days. Page also drew loud applause when he said he had recently switched from DSL (digital subscriber line) to a cable modem and found a big speed boost. The five executives agreed that technology is transforming the way the public consumes information and entertainment and that cable operators have a good opportunity to benefit from the changes. Time-shifting, online content downloading and the proliferation of new mobile devices such as Apple Computer's iPod and Sony's PlayStation Portable are among the forces disrupting traditional cable TV and other programmed entertainment sources, they said. Also during the panel, Cisco Systems President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) John Chambers said he believes more consolidation is necessary in the U.S. service provider industry. "Too much competition is just as bad as too little," said Chambers, who heads the dominant provider of data network backbone equipment and warned of the need to build out the nation's broadband infrastructure for global competitiveness. Also participating on the panel were Jeffrey Katzenberg, film producer and co-founder of DreamWorks, Jonathan Miller, chairman and chief executive officer of America Online and Brian Roberts, chairman and CEO of Comcast.

As more people worry about online credit card fraud and identity theft, while e-commerce providers worry about attracting new users, some are going to a much more old fashioned method of accepting payment: they're taking a checks. With a company named I4 Commerce acting as the middleman, many e-commerce sites now offer a "bill me later" option. I4 Commerce does a quick instant credit check and then allows the purchase (if the credit check goes smoothly). The buyer then receives an invoice a few days later which they can pay by check. I4 pays the merchant directly, so they don't have to worry if the individual pays or not. I4 claims that a very low rate (4%) default on their payments, but as one person in the article notes, that may just be because scammers haven't realized the potential yet. Also, the article doesn't note how I4 makes its money, and it seems likely that they're charging interest on these "bill me later" loans (as well as a transaction fee from the merchants using their system). Without any of the details being provided, it sounds a little questionable. There are an awful lot of "payday loan" type places that offer easy loans with ridiculously onerous terms. It's possible that I4's terms are perfectly reasonable (and the low default rate suggests that's true), but it's odd that the article doesn't clearly state what they are. Checking out their site turns up that there is, indeed, a 17.99% interest rate, but only for customers who choose not to pay the full amount within 25 days. So, the reality of this isn't so much that online stores are accepting checks, but that they're accepting "instant credit" provided by this one company.

Back in the late nineties there were all sorts of business models built on the idea of giving away something for free and forcing people to accept advertising instead. Thus, you could get a free computer, free internet access, and even a free car - if you just accepted advertising. The problem with almost all of these was that the business model didn't make sense, and none of the companies could stay in business. It's no surprise that people say they're willing to accept spam in exchange for a cheaper internet connection, but that doesn't mean there's enough money in it for companies, or that enough people would really pay attention. In fact, many would sign up, and then try to figure out a way to ditch the spam. That was the end result of almost all of these offerings. People would get the free PC, and then reformat the hard drive, or they would install an application that would block the pop up ads. Forcing people to do something they don't want isn't a particularly compelling business model.
