Memory Reading Hard Drive
06/30/2004 12:37 PM
The Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external
hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only
integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and
can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why
would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the
primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory
cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives
as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you
can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for
only the price of additional hard drives.

04/02/2005 01:30 PMAP - College junior Kyle Taylor is downloading hundreds of songs by No
Doubt, Bruce Springsteen and others onto the Compaq laptop in his
cramped dormitory room. With a few more clicks of his mouse, Taylor is
watching commercial-free "Seinfeld" episodes on his computer. In just
minutes, he then downloads the entire movie "A League of Their Own."
The 20-year-old is not breaking any laws. Nor is he at risk of
expensive lawsuits by the entertainment industry over copyright
violations.

College students overwhelmingly use the
Web, not databases: EPIC study
07/07/2004 11:26 AM
According to a new Electronic Publishing
Initiative at Columbia (
EPIC ) study ,
nearly all American college students turn to the Web for their primary research tool. Print
resources and campus databases lag far behind.
Nearly all respondents (99%) said they use electronic resources for
their schoolwork. However, they use the World Wide Web, then email,
before they use library-sponsored electronic databases. As might be
expected, undergrads are more likely than graduate students to use
non-library sponsored electronic resources.

75+ students at Hastings College in Nebraska are building a life-sized
version of the Candyland game (pictured here: three students posing as
the "Gloppy Chocolate Swamp") next week. This looks like a very
ambitious project, and the site claims the inspiration came from "a
philosophy paper about Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge."

College Leads Cybersecurity Drive
College Leads Cybersecurity Drive
04/12/2005 06:10 AMAmerica's UC Berkeley is to lead the fight for cybersecurity in the
USA. Experts from a number of colleges, led by the California-based
university, will work together at a new "TRUST" - or Team
for Research in Ubiquitous Secure Technology - centre, which is
expected to receive $19m of funding over five years.
The project was set up in response to increasing fears as people use
computers for more and more tasks. S Shankar Sastry, the professor who
will head up the project, said the idea is to look at ways to build
more secure systems before a disaster along the lines of an
"electronic Pearl Harbor". "If one thinks about the
possibilities, they're really quite frightening," he said.
Of course, Berkeley might want to look at its own cybersecurity
procedures first. As Neowin reported
here, details of almost 100,000 students were
stolen from the campus - because they were all being stored on the
hard drive of a laptop computer.

Students Upset To Give Up Email In The
Real World
06/17/2004 05:16 AMHere's yet another sign that the economy must be improving: the
biggest complaint that some students have coming out of college isn't
that they can't find a job or don't know what they want to do with
their lives, but that
they're
going to lose their college email account. Somehow, I think
they'll get over it. Still, it does make you wonder why most
universities don't keep those emails as forwarding addresses. The NY
Times reporter claims that all university forwarding addresses are
different from the student's addresses - but that's not true. My alma
mater is kind enough to let everyone keep their email addresses
forever as forwarding addresses. Besides, in this day and age, I'm
surprised that some people rely so much on their university email
address. Most students graduating today were likely to have had
internet access before they got to college, so I would have expected
many students to already be comfortable with a non-university address
when they entered school.

Logitec LHD-PBM2GU2, Portable 2.2GB 1"

While certainly not the first time I've seen a product
like this, Japanese manufacturer Logitec also appears to be jumping on
the "use hard drives instead of flash, because flash is expensive"
boat. Less than 0.4" thick and 1.96" wide and tall, Logitec's
LHD-PBM2GU2 has a 2.2GB capacity, and costs around 17,800 yen ($170
USD). Going by my "50 cents per gigabyte" philosophy of purchasing
hard drives, though, it seems I'll be waiting about 20 years before I
can actually get something like this. One thing I do like about the
unit is the universal USB 2.0 support — no special drivers are
required on modern flavors of Windows or MacOS. By the way, Logitec is
not the Japanese Logitech.
