A security advisory posted on Bugtraq demonstrates how hackers can compromise customers of T-mobile wireless and Verizon (landline) voicemail boxes. The advisory talks about the use of Caller-ID spoofing the customers number, allowing a bypass of the PIN code since the voicemail thinks that the customer is calling to check their own voicemail. According to Secure Science Corporation, there has been no response from the vendors. Comments have been posted that T-Mobile has optional PIN code protection off by default. Better turn it on.

RentACoder Privacy Breach

RentACoder Privacy Breach 02/10/2004 02:49 AM

Government agency exposes day-care data: RentACoder lands right in the thick of this one.

Two separate databases with personal information about children and their families were exposed. In one case, a list of children in the county's low-income day-care program was intentionally posted for download on Jan. 22 to a Web site used by computer programmers to hire temporary help. Another database, listing families participating in the county's foster care program, was posted to the same Web site in November. Both remained on the site, free for anyone to download, until they were removed Thursday.

The site in question was RentACoder, which we've talked about before. Apparently a subcontrator was having a problem with one of the tables, and thought nothing of posting a zipped copy of the database to a RentACoder forum. Sadly, the database contained information on the routines and whereabouts of hundreds of low-income New York children. Ugly.

For the record, it wasn't so much RentACoder's fault, but they're still in the thick of it according to the article. This can't be good for publicity. Via Slashdot.

First-ever VoIP telco?

First-ever VoIP telco? 11/05/2003 01:19 PM
Via Kevin Werbach's blog:
VC Fred Wilson announces that ITXC, Tom Evslin's VOIP backbone company, is merging with Teleglobe to form the world's third largest long-distance company. This is a significant development. Like several of us, Tom recognized years ago that VOIP was the future of the telephone business, but he actually did something to make it happen.

The First Virtual Telco?

The First Virtual Telco? 05/24/2004 12:46 PM
I think we're watching the birth of the the first 21st-century phone company.  A telco that virtualizes and outsources everything, except for a core IP backbone and a set of valuable business relationships and expertise.  A company built for an all-VOIP, converged, wired/wireless telecom industry.

Not Vonage or Skype.  I'll give you a hint: it was also the first great 20th century phone company.  It's AT&T.

AT&T is hollowing itself out -- and that's a good thing.  Under Dave Dorman, AT&T has invested heavily in building a true all-IP backbone and deploying VOIP offerings.  Following the sale of AT&T Wireless to Cingular and AT&T's subsequent deal with Sprint PCS, AT&T is poised to offer a full suite of wireless offerings without the cost of owning a cellular network.  And it is still the biggest player in the lucrative business services market, with a national brand second to none.

Not that there aren't challenges.  AT&T's consumer long-distance business is dying. Its efforts to preserve government-mandated wholesale discounts are collapsing.  The FCC shot down its attempt to treat VOIP backbone traffic an information service, exempt from paying access charges.  It faces big competitors like Verizon, SBC, and Comcast, who control the last-mile pipes into the home.  It still has plenty of fat and legacy infrastructure.  And the company has more than its share of self-inflicted wounds.  There is no guarantee AT&T will survive the next five years as an independent company.

Nonetheless, the AT&T of today comes closer than any of its rivals to my vision of the phone company of tomorrow.

Bangkok Telco Adds Wi-Fi

Bangkok Telco Adds Wi-Fi 01/18/2004 07:06 PM
Fixed-line provider TOT will open its TNET Wi-Fi service: TOT is a fixed-line provider that's rolling out more advanced features for land lines (including SMS and caller ID), but it's also trying out Wi-Fi at 100 baht per hour or about US$2.50. The first location is at a cafe that will also have 12 computers available; future locations include other branches of this cafe and supermarkets. Pricing deregulation appears to be driving the landline services into more competition against increasingly inexpensive package deals from the cellular operators, according to this article's details....
