More Leaked Samsung Concept Phones

More Leaked Samsung Concept Phones 01/04/2005 09:01 AM

samsung_tiny.jpg imageLooks like those Samsung concepts weren't the only ones to leak out onto the web, as iDNES.cz displays what they presume to be the entire 2005 Samsung GSM phone road map. It's an attractive looking bunch of phones, with traditional clamshells complimenting rotating screens and all sorts of other interesting (if perhaps pointless) features. And as I'm always on the lookout for devices I could easily confuse with my horse tranquilizers, the Samsung "Tiny" concept caught my eye, with its seemingly tiny interface and no apparent dialing pad (a slider, maybe?).

samsung_bbop_jav.jpg imageThese two concept phones from Samsung are likely to be introduced sooner than the Thor concept, as both are slated to run Microsoft's Pocket PC 2003 SE operating system. The white slider model, code-named "B-Bop," is a tri-band GSM device with a 2-megapixel camera, music player, and built-in Wi-Fi. The clamshell concept, code-named "Javelin," is a more conventional device, with a 1-megapixel camera and fairly staid selection of features (although it has a speedy 500MHz processor). It's unknown when any of these leaked concepts will actually be released, if ever, but it should give us all a very good idea of where Samsung is going next.

AP - Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has announced the world's first mobile phone to sport a tiny hard drive. With the built-in 1-inch, 1.5-gigabyte hard disk, the SPH-V5400 could store about 15 times more data than conventional handsets — everything from digital music files and photos to video, Samsung said.

While the ability to peruse Excel files on the go is nice, and the built-in remote control function for appliances is even nicer, I think the most unique bit might be the anti-bacterial silver coating that covers both handsets. Could anti-bacterial cases be the wave of the future? I will continue to avoid bathing until we have an answer.

Mobal conducted the survey of its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell phone purchase during 2004, and believe the results show that US citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are increasingly confident to travel internationally. Joe's article yesterday (See The Ether) reminded me of something I bumped into a while back about an artist's display in England called field.

Richard Box, the "Artist in Resident of the Department of Physics at the University of Bristol" assembled a display of 1301 flourescent tubes that are illuminated only by the ambient energy from high-voltage transmission lines.

Robot Dog, One of, Field Use

Robot Dog, One of, Field Use 01/07/2004 01:56 PM
The US Army TACOM group is spending $2.25 million on research projects aimed at building robot dogs that can carry a soldier's field equipment and keep up with the soldier over any terrain. Right now, each man has to carry up to 100 pounds of ammunition, food, and equipment. The long term challenge is making a four legged robot that can move as fast and quietly as a man over any terrain. The immediate challenge is making a four legged robot big enough for the job that doesn't fall over and doesn't need an internal combustion engine for power. For more, see Noah Shachtman's interesting article on the program in Wired.

119 students who failed courses get group email: 119 kids are failing out of the University of Kansas, and now they all know each other.

The students were notified earlier this week that they were in jeopardy of having their financial aid revoked. The e-mail sent Monday by the Office of Student Financial Aid asked for additional information to determine if they were still eligible for aid.

The e-mail address list included the names of all 119 students, with the result that everyone on it could see the names of all the others.
