into his hotel from the back seat of a taxi via telephone, picks up
his key from the concierge and checks into his room - all without

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-050:
Vulnerability in Microsoft Word and
Microsoft Excel Could Allow Arbitrary
Code to Run (831527)
11/13/2003 12:36 AMA security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Word that could allow
malicious code execution. This vulnerability exists due to to the way
Word checks the length of a data value (Macro names) embedded in a
document. If a specially crafted document were to be opened it could
overflow a data value in Word and allow arbitrary code to be executed.
If successfully exploited, an attacker could then take the same
actions as the user had permissions to carry out, such as adding,
changing or deleting data or files, communicating with a web site or
formatting the hard drive.

OpenOffice.org Writer vs. Microsoft Word
06/24/2005 09:35 PMSeveral years ago, I wrote "Opening Up to OpenOffice.org: Finding an
Alternative to Microsoft Word" -- my most quoted article. At that time
OpenOffice.org (OOo) was barely known, so I confined myself to
highlights. Now that OOo is starting to be used in business, a more
detailed look seems overdue. Accordingly, I compared the beta of OOo
Writer 2.0 with Microsoft Word 2003. Both are adequate for most users'
purposes, so I focused on functions that power users are likely to
want:

Independent document examiner Sandra Ramsey Lines said the memos
looked like they had been produced on a computer using Microsoft Word
software. Lines, a document expert and fellow of the American Academy
of Forensic Sciences, pointed to a superscript — a smaller,
raised "th" in "111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron" — as
evidence indicating forgery.
Microsoft Word automatically inserts superscripts in the same style
as the two on the memos obtained by CBS, she said.
"I'm virtually certain these were computer generated," Lines said
after reviewing copies of the documents at her office in Paradise
Valley, Ariz. She produced a nearly identical document using her
computer's Microsoft Word software.
Finally there's some value for knowing the 95% of stuff in Word
that no one ever uses or cares about. Who knew that knowing that
could change the course of history?
I demand apologies from all the people who made fun of me for

01/08/2004 07:39 PMTwenty years later, Microsoft continues to deliver on Gates' promise.
At Macworld Conference and Expo 2004 in San Francisco this week,
Microsoft announced plans to release Office 2004 for Mac and Virtual
PC for Mac Version 7 in the first half of 2004. These new releases,
and other products Microsoft makes for the Mac, are developed by an
oasis of Mac-only developers in an otherwise Windows world at
Microsoft: the Macintosh Business Unit (Mac BU). The Mac BU has made
its mark in the industry, and at Microsoft, in large part by
transforming four applications -- Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel,
Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Entourage -- into the most popular
productivity suite for the Mac platform.
