Starting from today, your browser's "Accept Language" setting is also honored on language sensitive pages on the php.net site. If you would like to get to the documentation page of echo for example, you can use the /echo shortcut on all mirror sites, if your browser is set to provide your language preference information to the server. This also makes the PHP error message links point to the documentation in your preferred language. You can set your preferences under Edit/Preferences/Navigator/Languages in Mozilla, and under Tools/Internet Options/Languages in Internet Explorer. This will probably also enhance your web experience on sites providing translated content.

The Internet can be a great source of information — but have you ever tried wading through hundreds of search results, looking for what you need? You can find more, faster, and save a lot of effort, with a new feature called the Research task pane. You'll find the task pane in several of the Microsoft Office System 2003 programs, including Microsoft Office Excel 2003. This task pane brings you links to online data services created by Microsoft and by a growing number of partners. With a quick click, you can check reference materials such as the Encarta® dictionary. Do you work in other languages? There's an online translation service. When you need up-to-the-minute business data, you can find that in the task pane, too. So quit scrolling through page after page of outdated material from who-knows-where. You'll find what you need right in your Office.

Bruce Tognazzini has broken his relative silence and published 3 articles on Panther.
Make Your Mac a Monster Machine
This is simply a listing of Tog's favourite third-party shareware add-ons, such as DragThing, ASM and WindowShade X (though I can't understand how he left out LaunchBar).
Panther : The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
This is a more interesting take on some of the user interface decisions Apple made in Panther. Being a founder of Apple's Human Interface Group, Tog has some interesting opinions.
Top 9 Reasons the Apple Dock Still Sucks
The third article, this is a well founded rant about the much-aligned Finder application, presumably because he couldn't fit it all in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

X11 for Panther available

X11 for Panther available 10/29/2003 03:24 AM
Apple has released X11 for Mac OS X v1.0, a version of the X Window system that's compatible with Mac OS X 10.3 ("Panther"). Besides being offered as a downloadable file, it's available as an optional install from the Panther CD. The software has long been available as a downloadable public preview version for Mac OS X v10.2.x "Jaguar," but this signifies its final v1.0 release. And according to Apple's specs, X11 for Mac OS X v1.0 requires Panther instead.

Panther

Panther 10/28/2003 11:07 PM

It seems like every time Apple releases a minor update, the mac lovers from all over exaggerate their upgrades into gifts from god that made their computers faster, their bodies sexier, and their lives richer.

Not being a huge Apple fanboy myself, I just want the thing to work, to come close to the speed of my PC, and to be more stable. It looks like Panther is the first release that lived up to the hype, for me at least. My powerbook seems downright peppy and I haven't seen a swirling beachball since I upgraded. Mail and iChat finally seem stable and Mail isn't going unresponsive when I have more than one window open. I finally see what everyone was raving about with Expose, having a quick keyboard shortcut to get to other windows on a crowded monitor is a lifesaver.

I haven't dived in much deeper than that, but so far I'm very happy with the $130 package.

I do like all the rounded and shadow stuff, and the fact that the crappy metal can be turned off in the finder windows makes me very happy. Up until now, I've not had any huge issues with it. Review of the Electrolux Trilobite 09/14/2004 12:56 PM
Our friends at Everyday Robots have posted a new robot product review. This time they review the Electrolux EL520A Trilobite robotic vacuum cleaner. The Trilobite, named after the extinct arthorpod of the same name and not to be confused with the Trilobot, is much more expensive than the Roomba but tries to make up for that by having more features such as a bigger dust bin, a HEPA filter, "European design", and a some intelligence that is used to map the room where it will be vacuuming.
