Micromat has released TechTool Pro 4.0.3, an update to the company's hard drive diagnostic and repair utility that adds support in the Video Memory test for the Radeon 9800 XT video card, which is compatible only with the Power Mac G5. In addition, it enhances support for G4 7447 and G5 970FX processors, adds support for Safari to the emergency eDrive volume, fixes bugs and more. Om Malik points out that he's lost two iPods in two days to the iPod updater. I just got my 3G 40GB back from the shop and updated with no problems today, but basically, keep a sharp eye -- there may be a problem.

This is unrelated to the fuzzy playback issues some people have been reporting, as well. I trust that Apple will fix the problem if there is one, but of course they'll have to acknowledge there is actually a problem first. Om took his iPod mini to the Apple store in San Francisco and swapped it out for a new one, but that still doesn't mean no one else will have a problem. Basically, be aware, scouts.

Q: I will be 83 in April and have an almost new Dell 8300. When my wonderful but dangerous-on-a-computer granddaughter got on my computer, she made my picture the desktop wallpaper. I didn't like that and had her change it.

Whatever she did next is beyond even my local computer expert. Every time I turn on the computer, the screen loads up and then, in front of the icons, pops up over two-thirds of my screen a window called System 32. We do not know how to put it back in its box without messing up the XP system.

All I can do now is close that System 32 before I can go online or use the computer any other way. Please help.

So a car company, which I'll call Jaguar (if I may be so bold), is offering up a chance to win a black iPod to promote its X-Type automobile. And what's interesting, besides the chance at a mythical black iPod, is the fact that there was once 75 of these custom-painted devices, at least according to MacCentral. But why? I presume that the other 74 had something to do with Jaguar, too, but where did they go? Were they given to other X-Type buyers? If you know, please share.

My guess? I think the original iPods were black, and then were later changed to white, just like they did to Jesus.
