Toyota to Unveil Faster, More Powerful
Prius Hybrid
08/30/2004 09:56 AM

Toyota is prepping a new "Sport" version of its gasoline/electric hybrid Prius that ups the available power of the combustion engine from 77 hp to a whopping 99 hp by increasing the displacement of the engine to 1.5 liters, and bolstering the electrical system for a new total rating of 145 HP. Toyota plans to unveil the sportier Prius at the late September Paris Motor show, along with an ultra-clean Diesel concept.

Can you just imagine how fast a hybrid V8 would be? Or maybe a turbocharged V12 hybrid? Or - oh my god - a rocket-powered hybrid.

Self-parking Prius

Self-parking Prius 01/16/2004 11:35 AM
A $2,200 add-on to the new Toyota Prius hybrid car allows the car to parallel-park itself, using a sensor array.
A dashboard display shows the image taken by the camera. When you near a parking space and shift into reverse, computerized lines pop up on the display, along with arrows pointing up, down, left and right.

Using the arrows, you move the lines around until they define exactly where you want the car to be parked. Then you push the "set" button on the display.

Keep your foot lightly on the brake pedal, and the car will start backing up, the steering wheel responding to an invisible hand. Voila, the car will park itself in the spot you've chosen with the arrows.

Prius test drive

Prius test drive 07/21/2004 04:48 PM
Matt test drove a Prius. He liked it, but says the gas mileage isn't nearly as good as advertised: "After 150+ miles I averaged nearly 54 mpg."
prius_dash_smThe key device, which is about the size of a small box of wooden matches, slides into a slot in the dashboard. The next step in starting the car, according to the quickstart guide, is to press the POWER button. I had to laugh — this car boots up. I really enjoyed pressing that button.

Anyone know a good Toyota dealer?

Anyone know a good Toyota dealer? 05/18/2004 09:16 PM

In order to impress the ladies I've decided it is time to get a flashy new car.  My friends at MIT tell me that minivans are the height of fashion these days.  So I want to get a 2004 Toyota Sienna.  I'll either trade in my 1998 Sienna (LE, 42,000 miles, leather, sunroof, fresh from $2400 of service) or give it away to an interesting charity (like the last one).  I paid $500 over invoice for the last minivan but the Boston dealers want nearly list price for the new ones, which leads to abusive $40,000 price tags

Anyone know a good Toyota dealer or a region of the country where you don't have to donate a kidney in order to get a Sienna?  Or must one wait for the big interest rate rise?

Alternatively, does anyone know whether or not the new 2005 Honda Odyssey will have openable windows in the middle like the Sienna?  If so, and Siennas remain hard to get, I might simply wait for the new Odyssey which will presumably be a slightly better vehicle.

[My specs:  XLE Limited, either 2WD or AWD is okay, Package #6 (HO; navigation system), glass breakage sensor on alarm, Arctic Frost Pearl exterior, stone leather interior, no financing required.]

Toyota Patents Car With Feelings

Toyota Patents Car With Feelings 07/28/2004 01:20 PM

26pate.jpg imageIt's a whole two days old, but I still hadn't seen this story in The Times about Toyota's new patent for vehicles, specifically cars, with feelings. By using a variety of color lights, moving 'eyebrows,' and varying the ride-height, the inventors aim to not only allow the car to express itself to its operator -- sad faces with tears for engine problems, etc. -- but also to allow the car itself to become an extension of the driver's emotion, signaling to other cars with winks and wags of its antenna tails. I have a feeling this will take off, if ever, in Japan first; that is, of course, unless they have a button for permanent scowling.

Toyota Humanoid Robot in the Works

Toyota Humanoid Robot in the Works 12/30/2003 01:38 PM
Yahoo says that Japan's top carmaker, Toyota plans to develop a humanoid robot by 2005. Toyota says they will give more details in January and hopes to display the robot at a World Exposition tradeshow in 2005. Toyota's robot will be a worker robot and built for "practical" purposes. A tall order for the robot includes nurse duties, factory work assistance, and rescue operations. Toyota even has plans to sell the humanoid robot, unlike some other Japanese companies that just build humanoid robots as test platforms and audience entertainers. Toyota even hopes to apply some of the newly developed technology to their cars.

Toyota to Start Selling Robots by 2010?

Toyota to Start Selling Robots by 2010? 06/05/2005 11:13 PM
Asahi News says that Toyota Motor Corp. will start selling robots by 2010. These robots by Japan's top auto maker will act as a receptionist, look after the elderly, provide nursing care, and childcare. Toyota already has created biped robots that play musical instruments to entertain at the Aichi Expo. Before these robots can become available scientists hope to make advances in battery technology, increased walking speed, and weight reduction. Toyota hopes to place these robots for sale in Toyota's 5,000 sales outlets across the nation (of Japan?). The robots will have a reasonable cost of around one hundred ($925 US) to several hundred thousand yen ($9,250 US?) with prices to fall once they are mass produced. However, another article claims just the opposite that Toyota has no plans to commercialize the humanoid robot it is developing. So what gives, is this mixed signals or is Toyota backtracking?
