The iPod Garage to hold the first-ever iPod Garage Party on South Beach in Miami

What could be cooler than hanging out with other iPod users? How about doing so on Miami's South Beach?

On September 1st, the iPod Garage will be hosting the first-ever iPod Garage Party. And you're invited. What's more, if you bring your iPod with you, you'll get to hook your iPod up to the sound system and show us what you've got, for up to fifteen minutes. You don't have to be a professional DJ, just share with us the fifteen minutes of your music library that you cherish the most. iPod-related prizes will be given to those of you who can win over the audience the most effectively.

What's cooler than hanging with your fellow iPod users on Miami's South Beach on September 1st? How about going home with a brand new iPod mini in your pocket?

Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep, it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.

Companies Want Free Pass On Securing
Your Info
03/06/2004 02:05 AM
With all the stories coming out of various corporate databases being hacked and your supposedly "private" info being taken, many companies are taking an interesting approach. Instead of focusing on better ways to secure the info and protect your privacy, they're snea king in waivers to agreements, where you have to say that you give up your right to sue them, should they leak your info. It turns out that among all the legal language you go through when using Verizon Wireless' or American Airlines' online websites, they make you agree that you won't sue them if they can't keep your data secure. This doesn't give them much incentive to keep the system as secure as possible, does it? On the flip side, though, many are saying the reason they're doing this is because of recent actions by the FTC - where they sued certain companies for promising security levels they didn't meet. Since it's difficult to guarantee that the data won't be stolen, companies are resorting to these legal clauses to get around the liability issue. Of course, I wonder how enforceable such a waiver really is? If the company is shown to be grossly negligent in how they set up their security, it probably won't matter that people clicked through a waiver that they didn't read.

Linksys Offers "Free" Router with Vonage

Linksys Offers "Free" Router with Vonage
Sign-up
06/17/2005 03:19 PM
Linksys has an interesting deal to tie in Vonage subscribers with hardware sale: If you purchase a Linksys WRTP54G, their Vonage-enabled two-phone-line 802.11g router, you can receive a total of $130 in separate rebates with a trade-in. Here's the run-down: buy the WRTP54G from a participating merchant with your intent to sign up for Vonage's voice over IP service. The merchant will offer $20 off as a mail-in or instant rebate. (Amazon.com is offering it as an instant rebate, bringing the initial cost down to $110 from $130.) Next, fill out the $10 Linksys mail-in rebate for the unit itself. The merchant will include the form or allow you download it to print out. This $20 and $10 rebate don't require the Vonage purchase, but it would be odd to buy this model without planning on using Vonage. Signing up for Vonage brings a $50 mail-in rebate after 90 days of service, while trading in any older wireless router (no particular types are defined) adds another $50. The Amazon.com downloadable form lets you apply for both rebates at the same time. That's a lot of hoops to go through, and it's not quite free--you'll spend about $5.00 on postage and photocopying, and possibly an hour or two or your time filling out forms and mailing items. The router must be purchased by July 23 to qualify. The $10 rebate must be postmarked by Sept. 21 to qualify, while the $50 or $100 form must be postmarked no later than 60 days after the date of purchase on your invoice....

Readers respond to Xeni's "iPod Beemer"
post with in-car digital audio tips

Readers respond to Xeni's "iPod Beemer"
post with in-car digital audio tips
09/10/2004 12:02 AM
Xeni Jardin: Following up on yesterday's post ( Link) about my week-long test drive of BMW's new iPod-integrated 330ci convertible, more in-car audio tech pointers from BoingBoing readers. Meanwhile, I'm still mopping up drool around the office. That iPod Beemer was nerd-o-licious.

Michael Morgan says, "One of the better approaches I have seen relies on using the CD changer inputs that many car stereos have. The simpler products, such as the one I have, provide RCA audio jacks. Better ones allow iPod control through the CD changer controls. The sound quality is better than FM or cassette tape adapters although the integration of iPod display and control is either poor or absent." Link

Nik Clayton says, "You should try out Dension's IceLink 1.1. This provides a cradle/dock that you can mount on the dash (damage free). Just drop the iPod in the dock, and the audio's taken from iPod's dock connector (far better quality than the headphone socket) and routed to the stereo, in place of the CD-multichanger. So the steering wheel controls work for changing tracks, and so on. And, of course, your iPod's there on the dash, so you can see all the information it displays. It also works in cars other than BMWs." Link BoingBoing reader Chris says, "There are two other common solutions; some car radios now have a front panel auxiliary input. Just get a 'stereo plug to stereo plug' cable, and away you go. The other option is one of the FM modulators that plugs into the antenna lead. See the Farenheit EFM-01 or the JVC KS-IF200 - likely found many places but they re listed at Crutchfield. They are a little trickier to install, but as long as your car FM radio has an antenna (!) they should work. Link."

Neil replies to a comment submitted to BoingBoing by reader Becky ( Link). He says, "To follow-up on Becky's problem with iPod installations in cars without cassette adapters there is actually another solution. Blitzsafe makes adapters that plug into the CD changer port that lives in most cars, and converts it to an AUX input for your car stereo. Then you can run a regular stereo cable to the front of the car to plug in any device you like (such as an iPod). I used one to install XM Satellite radio in my BMW. Sadly, it doesn't look like they have any for Saturn cars yet :( -- Link to Blitzsafe."

Tom Karches says, "A company called Soundgate (Link) makes a number of devices that allow iPods to be attached to factory or aftermarket stereos. Their auxillary input adapters attach to the cd changer plug on cd changer ready stereos and pass the audio through the changer input. If you have a changer already, they have a model that plugs in between the stereo and the changer and provides a switch to select the changer or the ipod. This does not provide ipod control, unfortunately. Perhaps something like this would help: Link. I'll probably put the Soundgate adapter in my minivan. If I decide to equip the honda similarly, I'll probably go with an inline RF modulator like this or this."

Anthony Hall says, "Although BMW claims they are the first car manufacturer with integrated iPod support I actually saw ads for Smart cars shipping with iPod cradles several months ago... I dunno, perhaps it's considered third party but Smart was plugging it in the own ads in the UK. Looks liker a much simpler proposition to me. I agree with you that having the iPod just rolling around loose in the glove compartment is nuts." Link

Elemental Audio Systems on Tuesday introduced Neo dynium, a plug-in for RTAS, Audio Unit and VST-compatible audio software designed for compression and dynamics processing. It uses an "I/O Map" visual interface that helps audio pros optimize and direct their efforts, rather than relying on more common transfer curves and displays. Neodynium costs US$159 (and is available for $139 for a limited time). It works with Digidesign Pro Tools, Emagic Logic and other software. System requirements call for a G3 or faster with Mac OS X v10.2 or newer and a compatible host application.
