  • Gilmore v. Ashcroft: Meet John Gilmore. On the 4th of July 2002, John Gilmore, American citizen, decided to take a trip from one part of the United States of America to another. He went to Oakland International Airport -- ticket in hand -- and was told he had to produce his ID if he wanted to travel. He asked to see the law demanding he show his 'papers' and was told after a time that the law was secret and no, he wouldn't be allowed to read it.

The Diebold Papers and the Law

The Diebold Papers and the Law 04/24/2004 12:57 PM

Ernest Miller discusse s a judge's ruling that the Oakland Tribune must return legal memos it was leaked about the latest Diebold e-voting fiasco. His main point, and it's a good one:

"Of course, one might note that bloggers would have been much more likely to publish a story based on the memos and publish all the memos simultaneously. There would be nothing left to return to Jones Day under the judge's order; it all would have been published on the internet. By trying to maintain an exclusive, the newspaper has created the possibility that the documents will be suppressed."

Karen Schneider, the Freerange Librarian, has an article in the Library Journal on the ethics of librarian blogs that begins promisingly: "Blogging is turning information into a conversation..." And, it continues just as well, explaining the ethics and ethos of blogging in what she calls the "biblioblogosphere." She recommends transparency, linking to sites with which you disagree, being accurate — even postponing pressing the Publish button until you're sure, a pretty drastic step for some of us — and admitting your mistakes. As if the Patriot Act wasn’t dangerous enough. This is a very scary ruling by the Supreme Court.

    ·  Reuters: ruled on Monday that people are required to identify themselves when asked to do so by police, and rejected arguments that it violates their constitutional rights to privacy and to remain silent.

    James Madison Papers

James Madison Papers 04/02/2005 07:30 AM
    James Madison Papers
    http:// memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/madison_papers/

The Library of Congress announced the release of the James Madison Papers, now available on the Library's American Memory Web at the above link. The James Madison Papers from the Manuscript Division at the Library of Congress consist of approximately 12,000 items captured in some 72,000 digital images. They document the life of the man who came to be known as the "Father of the Constitution" through correspondence, personal notes, drafts of letters and legislation, an autobiography, legal and financial documents, and miscellaneous manuscripts. The collection is organized into six series dating from 1723 to 1836. Beginning with a selection of his father's letters, the series moves through Madison's years as a student, and as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates and include extensive notes of the debates during his three-year term in the Continental Congress (1779-82). Notes and a memoranda document Madison's pivotal role in the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and the Virginia ratification convention of 1788. Other materials reflect the nine years that Madison spent in the House of Representatives and his tenure as Secretary of State during Thomas Jefferson's presidency. Correspondence and notes trace his two terms as the fourth president of the United States, illuminating the origins and course of the War of 1812 and the post-war years of his presidency and subsequent retirement. The collection also includes a complete copy of Thomas Jefferson's notes from the Continental Congress of 1776. Notable correspondents include Dolley Payne Madison, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, Edmund Randolph, Noah Webster, and Secretary of War James Armstrong, whose correspondence with Madison fills an entire series. This has been added to Reference Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.
