a General Electric plant in Bridgeport. That was back in the early

Pace left the plant, enrolled in computer school, studied information
technology and never looked back. That is, not until 23 years later,
on the day he was told his $100,000-a-year job as an IT (information

The Associated Press reported, today, on a few information
technologist that are doing well in their young careers, so well, in
fact, that they each hope to retire before reaching middle age, and
they attained their success without a formal higher education. This
article struck a raw chord with me, because I emphasize the value of
formal education to all of the students whom I teach, including those
seeking a B.S. in information technology (IT) and those pursuing a
M.B.A. with a further concentration in IT.

Google Sacked Killed And Then Ate A Blogger
Mark Jen, fresh new Googler, formerly of Microsoft, was happily
blogging about life at Google when he was called to the company's
Human Resources office. There he was told that he was being let go.
And then, as the term "let go" was repeated with a slightly different
stress, the floor beneath Jen was opened up, and he plunged into a
school of the little piranhas Google HR keeps in a moat. The piranhas
were later served up to other cowering employees by Google's famous
sushi chef, who visits weekly. An important lesson was learnt.

Techies Lined Up For Disney Job?
Techies Lined Up For Disney Job?
09/20/2004 02:54 AM
Rumors are flying this weekend that
Yaho
o CEO Terry Semel may be the leading candidate to replace Michael
Eisner at Disney. Semel, of course, comes from the media world
and was actually a surprise hire at Yahoo, which he joined from Warner
Brothers. He still commutes to Yahoo from Southern California, flying
up to Silicon Valley for half the week. The article has anonymous
quotes from people suggesting both that he would like to take it and
that he wouldn't. Obviously, there's still plenty to be done at
Yahoo, and it would probably anger a lot of people if he bailed out
now. Still, what's more interesting is that many of the "leading
candidate" rumors are from the tech world (even if they have plenty of
media credentials): along with Semel, there's Meg Whitman (who says
she's
not
interested in the job) and Steve Jobs, who has been rumored for
plenty of top media company jobs lately. No matter what, it's
interesting to note that experience in the tech/internet world is also
seen as at least somewhat valuable in the media world. It's a step in
the right direction, as no media company is going to remain successful
if they don't understand what's happening in tech.

U.S. Techies Working At Overseas

U.S. Techies Working At Overseas
Salaries?
12/03/2003 02:39 PMThe issue of tech companies offshoring programming work is certainly a
contentious one, and Business Week has an article talking about how
one company dealt with the dilemma of saving 50% on salaries (vs. the
standard asking price) by outsourcing to India or, instead,
offering much lower salaries to American workers. The
company found that they were flooded with resumes for the low paying
job - many of which turned out to be high quality programmers. The
company hired four programmers at the lower wages, and used them for
the one project. Two of the programmers were eventually hired on as
full-time employees at regular salaries. Of course, this sort of
thing only works while the job market is weak, but does suggest that
the market is correcting somewhat for boom-time salaries that were out
of proportion with reality. Still, I take issue with the "obvious"
choice, as described in the article, of going with cheaper overseas
workers. I think that the benefits of having local, on-site staff who
you can communicate with directly is quite valuable - often in excess
of the amount of money "saved" in offshore salaries. In this case,
the employer only valued the location at $5,000/year - which is much
less than it's probably worth. The risk in offering salaries that are
so low is that you may get lower quality workers who are much more
likely to jump ship. However, in this case, it's clear that the
employer realized this, and appears to have made his reasons clear to
the employees - and, in fact, adjusted the salaries well upwards for
the employees he wanted to keep. This all brings to mind the whole
concept of "professional internships" that seem to become popular when
the economy is down. People who want to convince a potential employer
of their worth sometimes agree to unpaid (or barely paid)
"internships" to convince the company that they're worth hiring.

Cloudscape goes Open Source
Cloudscape goes Open Source
08/03/2004 11:04 AMIBM is planning to
announce that they'll be donating the Java-based Cloudscape
database to the Apache foundation, to be released as open source.
Most business applications require some database functions
like storing and looking up price or customer information, whether in
a Web page or a laptop program. Cloudscape is intended for use as a
simple database that resides inside a software application instead of
as a full-fledged database program that runs on its own in corporate
data centers as Oracle, I.B.M.'s DB/2, and Microsoft's SQL or MySQL
do.
Placing software into the open source realm does not guarantee that it
will succeed in attracting programmers to maintain and improve the
code. Still, Java experts say that there is a need for a basic Java
database and that the Cloudscape code could prove to be popular. "It
is a nice, out-of-the-box database," said Greg Stein, chairman of the
Apache Foundation.
If you've played with Sun's J2EE reference
implementation, you've probably dinked around with Cloudscape for
a bit. It's a handy little SQL database built right in to the app.
Having a built-in SQL DB allows for some handy methods of data storage
fo rsmall apps, and obviates the need for a set of database
installation instructions.

IBM Frees Cloudscape Into The Open

08/03/2004 01:43 AMThere are plenty of sites that cover various "open source" news
stories that we usually avoid around here, but it's worth noting that
IBM has decided to
release the
source code for the Cloudscape Java database technology that they
own. Obviously there are already some very popular open source
databases out there, but the fact that IBM is donating a fairly large
product into the open source world shows that they seem to understand
at least some of the benefits of open source, while other companies
still continue to insist there's something evil about open source
technologies. Recognizing that (a) the product isn't central to their
strategy and (b) more active development around it may
drive more
demand for their own Websphere offering, it makes perfect sense to
open source Cloudscape (now to be known as Derby). It would be nice
if more companies began to realize that not everything they've worked
on needs to be sold. If it can be used as a form of a promotion that
drives more sales for other products, that can often be a very
intelligent strategy.
