Microsoft tries their hand
at peripherale couture with a new mouse designed by industrial
designer Philippe Starck, reminiscent of the hemispheres of a brain,
they say. To me, it recalls the smooth contours and glowing comfort of
... the mouse. Still, I give Microsoft room to get as fruity as they
want -- their mice have been my go-to interface pucks for years.
Microsoft has also added a few new Special Edition finishes to
their Wireless Optical and IntelliMouse Explorer lines. Since when is
nice product design "performance art," though?

Hardware as art: Microsoft meets Philippe Starck: Since App
le seems to have pulled a Microsoft, we'll balance that out with
this story of Microsoft pulling an Apple.
No, they're not going to over-price their products in a concerted
attempt to achieve and remain at single-digit market share (sorry
— it was too easy...). Instead, Redmond has hired Phillippe Starck, designer
extraordinaire, to make all sorts of Mac-ish hardware
accessories.

Microsoft Says It Is Exploring the Sale
of Slate Magazine
07/23/2004 06:09 PMMicrosoft, which earlier this week announced a one-time cash dividend
worth $32 billion to its shareholders, said today that it was
exploring the sale of Slate, a pioneer in digital publishing.
According to company executives, Microsoft is considering a sale of
Slate because the model of creating a Web magazine of cultural
criticism and political analysis to attract visitors to its MSN
Network has little business salience in an age dominated by search
applications. And the site's small size limits its ability to
meaningfully contribute to Microsoft's revenues.

The Mouse BT
The Mouse BT
02/06/2005 03:24 AMI was in the drugstore picking up a prescription and wandered into the
computer section, where I found myself impulse-buying
The Mouse BT from some
outfit I’ve never heard of called DVForge. It’s Bluetooth and
looks like an Apple mouse, only it’s got two buttons (the way this
is accomplished seems to rely on bending acrylic in a really clever
way) plus a scrollwheel. It’s slick, slick, slick; and looks neat. I
bought the Aluminum model but now that I realise there’s a white
version too I think that would look better. On top of looking nice,
the scrollwheel is the smoothest I’ve used. I’m kind of worried
how fast it’ll go through batteries; I’ll report back when I know.

Myron Krueger began his pioneering work in interactive
art in 1969. He was one of the first to explore the aesthetics of
interactivity with his “responsive environments.” ¶ While
preparing a talk that included a reminiscence of Krueger demoing
Videoplace in the 80s, I was surprised he’d not
yet merited even a stub in the Wikipedia. While that may eventually
motivate me to register and start the page, for now, I will just share
some links. [more inside, including videos]
