Anti-Spam Laws Sound Nice, But Won't Do

Anti-Spam Laws Sound Nice, But Won't Do
Much
12/09/2003 02:31 PM
The press is going spam crazy now that Congress has finally agreed on a single spam bill, which will soon be signed into law by the President. However, the people who actually understand the spam problem are slamming this law, and a new UK anti-spam law, both of which will do little, if anything, to stop spam. In some cases, both laws can be seen to legalize certain forms of spam - which will be exploited as a loophole by just about every spammer with at least a few functioning brain cells. As the article points out, both laws are great if you believe that spammers are law-abiding, honest people. Otherwise, they're terrible. However, with all the talk (good and bad) about these spam laws, how come no one is asking how we're going to measure the success or failure of these laws? Everyone just assumes that they'll work (or they won't). Shouldn't we have a built in way to check up on the results six months from now and (more importantly) shouldn't there be a plan B in the likely event that these laws do nothing to slow the spam problem down?

Read Books, Not Spam

To celebrate "National Library Week," TechSoup Stock and Mailshell are sponsoring the "Read Books, Not Spam!" campaign to help U.S. public libraries protect themselves against spam. In recognition of the value of our public libraries, on April 20, 2005 all U.S. public libraries will be eligible to order at http://ga0.org/ct/Up1JO4S1pXgp/ a free, full year donation of Mailshell anti-spam desktop software for each employee.

In addition, the TechSoup website will provide informative articles for libraries to learn more about spam - and how to have a safer, spam-free computing environment. TechSoup Stock is a nonprofit service of TechSoup that offers donated and discounted technology products for libraries and nonprofits from leading technology providers at low administrative fees.

Registration is required to receive the donation. To learn more and pre-register, visit http://ga0.org/ct/y11JO4S1pXgP/ .

HOW TO ORDER YOUR FREE SOFTWARE

If you have pre-registered your library on TechSoup Stock, you can just visit the TechSoup Stock website on April 20th at
http://ga0.org/ct/y11JO4S1pXgP/ and place your order. This completely free offer is available for one day only - April 20, 2005 between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT).

To expedite the processing of your order on April 20, please register your organization so that we can pre-qualify your organization as an eligible U.S. public library. Just follow these two steps:

* Download and complete the special Mailshell Anti-Spam Donation
Pre-Qualification Form (PDF) at http://ga0.org/ct/yd1JO4S1pXgQ/ .
* Fax your completed form to (415) 633-9444. If your library is a 501(c)(3) organization, please also fax your library's 501(c)(3) letter of determination from the IRS.

If you have ordered from TechSoup Stock before, no additional registration is necessary to participate. Note: TechSoup Stock conducts a thorough qualification process to ensure that all organizations participating in our donation programs are qualified U.S. public libraries with a 501(c)(3) designation or FSCS ID.

LEARN HOW TO FIGHT SPAM

"Read Books, Not Spam" is more than free software. It is an educational campaign to help libraries manage the negative effects of spam on their organization. At TechSoup.org you can find helpful articles and resources on topics such as how to avoid being a spammer and how to prevent spam. Visit: http://ga0.org/ct/U71JO4S1pXg0/ .

Porn Spam Is Washed Up
05/24/2004 05:37 PM
The latest study on spam trends appears to show that financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam - though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to slow down the amount of spam sent.

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PM
Back in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to differe ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed - and many people want it more for the always on connection than the speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US, many more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is good enough for what most people want to do with their connections now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many subscribers as well.

I am now getting 2,000+ spams a day. There are 1,440 minutes in a day The rate of incoming spams is therefore getting close to the interval it takes me to check my email and dispose of a single spam: By the time I'm done checking, more spam has arrived. That is the point at which the spam droplets form a continuous stream. And that is the point at which no interval of my life will ever be spam-free again....
