Comedy of Errors
08/09/2004 07:19 AMMy family loves Shakespeare & Co. up in Lenox where we're currently on
vacation. We've been going to its performances for about twenty years
now. A couple of nights ago, we saw a preview of Comedy of Errors.
(Hint: It's the one with the two Dromios, no Rosalind, and doesn't
take place in Verona.) Shakespeare & Co.'s performances are always
lively, bawdy, and understandable. The troupe is first rate. Their
performances IMO feel like Shakespeare as he was seen by his
contemporaries. Yet, this performance wasn't my favorite. Too much
mugging, too broad, too hectic. Yes, it's a farce with...

Sony vs. The PSP Importers - A Comedy
06/24/2005 04:03 PM
Welcome to cuckoo world! Sony, in
all their majestic wisdom, has decided to hunt down and kill PSP
importers in the UK. Let's read this, shall we? "The Japanese
electronics giant Sony is demanding that companies importing its hotly
anticipated PlayStation Portable to Britain reveal their customers'
identities so the equipment can be tracked down."
Now, why would they do this? Because they are crazy? Because Sony
CEO Sir Howard Lancelot Stringer Esq. has finally gone all Howard
Hughes on us? Are those purchasers of Japanese PSPs in there on the
Rainy Isle using them to mount an offensive against the Sony Yakuza
stronghold or are they attempting to pay $400 for a game device. Next
week: Sony kills and eats babies.
Sony bid to stop grey imports [Guardian]
UPDATE - Ok, so they don't eat
babies so much.

The
Conqueror, the
Howard
Hughes-backed film about Ghengis Kahn with John Wayne as the lead,
is an awful film is somewhat of an understatement. Bad acting in the
hot Nevada desert surrounded by radiation from the Yucca Flats lead to

shipped radioactive sand back to Hollywood for extra scenes.
Lost in La Mancha doesn't
seem so bad in retrospect.

As the recent, angry testimonials I had found recounted, with a

which I was about to appear was a fraud.
Not really a debate at all, the show is actually
a program for Comedy Central (yes, an MTV/Viacom network) called

humiliation of the expert guests who are brought on expecting a
legitimate discussion program."

Heil Honey, I'm Home: Britcom about
Hitler
Heil Honey, I'm Home: Britcom about
Hitler
12/16/2003 11:12 AMIn 1990, Britons were delivered a a short-lived sitcom called Heil
Honey, I'm Home, about Adolph Hitler and Eva Braun's home-life next
door to a Jewish couple in the 1930s.
This most infamous of all British sitcoms attracted controversy out of
all proportion to the number of people who saw it. Naturally, the
hullabaloo was built on the shocking notion that anyone would mount a
comedy about Hitler and the Jews - seemingly the definition of poor
taste. In reality, the show was no more than a spoof - and not of
1930s Germany but of the kind of 1960s/1970s American sitcoms that
would embrace any idea, no matter how stupid. The title, the corny
dialogue, the applause when anyone arrived on set, the acting
(McCaul's Hitler was more reminiscent of Chaplin's The Great Dictator
than your actual Fuhrer) - all were clear signposts of parody. Mel
Brooks had already explored the concept of pantomime Nazis in his
masterpiece movie (and eventual stage musical) The Producers.

Last week's Cornell Debate between EFF senior IP attorney Fred Von

the most engrossing three hours of video I've watched all month.
Unfortunately and inexplicably, this was only available as a crappy,
dropout-prone Real stream from Cornell, which meant you couldn't load
the audio onto your iPod or download the video to show your friends

Now someone's converted the video to something else (not sure what)
and posted a .torrent, packaged with soemthing called "Matroska" that
seems like a good way to add bookmarks and such to video (I'd be
interested in knowing whether this packaging presents any barrier to
someone who simply wants to download the video and watch it in her

04/27/2004 03:53 PMSo, I've been fiddling around with BitTorrent and all the variant

resumable downloads make it a keen thing indeed. It turns out that
BitTornado, one of the variant clients, does apply a global rate cap
if you're serving multiple files up. This is good as Bittorrent
clients'll eat all the available bandwidth, and then some, if given
the chance. Not a huge problem for client-only systems, or systems
with big upstream pipes, but for me with a smallish (192K) upstream
pipe, well... running multiple torrents wouldn't be an...

up, <liblink>. Firefox reads that as <liblink>,
resurrecting that Internet horror of ages past, the blink tag. Odd
that such a progressive browser is so eager to enable useless old tags
that it even does it where it isn't supposed to.

04/29/2004 07:41 AMBaen Books is a successful science fiction publisher that releases a
lot of its titles as non-DRM text/html files via its website and on
CDROMs bound into its book. Now, all six of the Baen CDs, representing
a substantial library of science fiction, are available as Bit Torrent
files, to be gang-downloaded to all comers at speed.

After the weblogs.com hosting debacle<
/a> surfaced yet again by people trying to reignite the flames, I
decided to try to discuss it again with David Weinberger, whose
comments in the middle of the flamefest are widely cited as evidence
of how I didn't do all I should have done to notify people with blogs
on weblogs.com. I know David to be a thoughtful, careful and
considerate person. And to this day well-intentioned people question
my integrity over these events. That's not cool for a person such as
myself who values his integrity.
We reviewed the options that people suggested at the time, 1.
Send an email, or 2. Post something on Scripting News. Neither would
have worked, the mail addresses were four years old and probably
didn't work, most of the sites never got past the Hello World stage
(so the authors might not remember creating the site, and certainly
don't care), and most people with free sites weren't and probably
still aren't Scripting News readers, any more than most Blogger users
were Evhead readers.
Posting something on Scripting News wouldn't have notified the
users, but it sure would have notified the flamers. I think they were
saying that they were complaining that they weren't told in advance
that it was time to rip me a new one. ";->"
Anyway, he posted a correctio
n, so next time this comes up, as it is sure to, the flamers won't
be able to use him to support their attacks. Thanks!

Now that I've come up for air after my latest codin
g frenzy, I see that Brian
Bailey has done something I should've done a long time ago: than
k Dave Winer for his huge contributions to our syndicated
world.
FeedDemon relies on RSS, OPML, weblogs, podcasting and SOAP - all
of which were invented, co-invented or evangelized by Dave Winer. I'm
having a blast developing FeedDemon, so thank you, Dave, for making my
world a better a one.
