Alternate News Reader UIs
Alternate News Reader UIs
02/10/2004 03:02 AM
Here are some alternative news reader UI ideas to consider.
First two are usuable
as is, but the rest require quite a bit of polishing and crafting
before they can
be useful. I came up with them while I was sitting at a
recent workshop after
hearing the speaker complain about how boring existing news readers
are.
Flashcard UI
News item are displayed on flashcards. Background color,
font size, and
number of items per card (1-7), and transition
effect should be configurable.
User can navigate forward or backward to next or previous set of
headline. Up
or escape to wider view (list of news or sources) should be
available. Fullscreen-mode
is essential.
Movie Credit Screen UI
Similar to Flashcard-style UI but visual presentation effects seen
commonly in movie
opening or closing credit screens are used. UI should not
emphasize more
than one news item at one time. For example, if news items
fade or blur in and
out then current candidate for further reading should be most
noticeable.
Background music and entertaining audio ads can be be used
simultaneously. Again
fullscreen-mode is essential. Screensaver-mode is optional.
Video Game UI
Wild array of UIs are possible here including using news items as
prizes, gates, or
monsters.
Multiplayer UI
You can see what others are interested in using various UI schemes
such as footprints,
ranking, etc.
A refined version of these UI might fade in a transparent headline
over the screen
or in some assigned space for a 'while' when user hasn't moved the
mouse or typed
anything for certain amount of time. Since most news one
might read using a
news reader aren't urgent, you can spread hundreds of headlines
over the entire day
instead of flooding the reader with large number of
popups simultaneously like
SharpReader does.
These ideas are just branches off a single idea: news readers as
boob tubes for couch
potatos. Instead of overwelming the user with long list
of articles and
folders, turn it into a linear experience like the TV.
Press the power
button to turn it on and just sit back until you see something you
like and then press
another button to dive in. Add another button for
fast-forward or switch the
channel.

News Sites, Where the Men Are
News Sites, Where the Men Are
08/04/2004 04:43 AMThe online news business has a curious imbalance: Far more men read
news on the Web than women. For online publishers seeking to steal
advertising money from TV, this is a boon. But editors are worried
something is off kilter with online news. By Laila Weir.

Why Requiring Registration Does More
Harm Than Good For News Sites
Why Requiring Registration Does More
Harm Than Good For News Sites
02/12/2004 05:00 PMWe've been discussing news site registration lately, and Digital
Deliverance has a piece where they explain
why
it's likely to backfire for almost all sites who try it. As we
were just saying last week, sites that require registration and/or
demographic info tend to get
many
fewer visitors and a ton of bogus data. As the Digital
Deliverance piece points out, most sites aren't even doing anything
with that
dirty
data - so it's completely useless. They're getting fewer visitors
and bad data they don't even use for any reasonable purpose.
This certainly doesn't help them get more advertising, but the fewer
readers does mean they'll get less advertising. Doesn't seem like
such a smart strategy - and yet more sites seem to be doing it every
day.

Sites like LiveJournal and Tribe are poised to be the next big thing

like 1997.
I find that most time, there is better security from those who
know little about it but run smaller "Social Network" software, i.e.
PHPNuke, Post Nuke, etc. Some of the security features I have seen in
these Open Source software are just know showing up in things like...

Speedy Sheets
Speedy Sheets
05/12/2004 04:03 PMThis is a
n
ice little hint from Mac OS X Hints — you know those little
sheets that slide out from document windows when you save or print?
They appear in Cocoa apps like TextEdit, Mail, iPhoto etc. You can
speed things up by changing the defaults setting with this command :
defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSWindowResizeTime .001
Now, instead of waiting for the window to slide out, it instantly
appears and disappears, letting you get on. Eye candy is nice, but
sometimes you just wanna get stuff done quickly and easily.
