Inheritance Considered Harmful (PDF)

Inheritance Considered Harmful (PDF) 01/14/2003 11:24 AM
It could also be argued that inheritance falls into the class of programming language features which are accepted and instigated without thorough analysis, only to be subsequently rejected when experience has shown them to be unhelpful. It would appear that encapsulation is more relevant and applicable than inheritance, and its benefits to the maintenance process are more obvious. In [12], it is suggested that in future systems, architectures based on aggregation will be more appropriate than those based on inheritance. This is particularly true of systems incorporating multiple inheritance whose structures have tended to be elaborately concocted... Lastly, contrary to what was originally thought, it may be that most OO systems are simply not amenable to the use of inheritance, and their functionality does not lend itself well to use of inheritance. -- Rachel Harrison and Steve Counsell

"tri" Not an easy article to read, but basicly it's saying complex inheritance trees (more than 3 levels in depth?) are difficult to maintain, and many designs use inheritance inappropriately. That is why the big thing in C# and Java today is generics, and why I was such a fan of templates in C++, even if the syntax was terrible. PHP has less need for generics because most of its operators and functions are polymorphic (thx to dynamic typing).

New Domains Considered Harmful, Says Tim

New Domains Considered Harmful, Says Tim
Berners-Lee
05/19/2004 01:14 PM
As lots of folks are pushing to get ICANN to expand the number of top level domains (so people an get more than just .com, .net, etc.), Tim Berners-Lee is argung against the idea, saying that current proposals are really just a racket to get more money out of companies. The original idea was that the domain name space (really just the .com space) was getting too crowded and good names were increasingly difficult to come by. However, instead of really expanding the market, adding .biz and .info mostly just made companies feel the need to buy up the same domains they already owned the .com for. If anything, he considers it domain "inflation" - devaluing existing domains. He is particularly against the idea of a .mobi domain name specifically for wireless content, agreeing with us that there's really no need for it and it will make things more confusing. Increasingly, mobile phones and devices are able to access the entire internet without any problems. There's no reason they need a specific separate TLD all their own. He's also against the idea of the .xxx domain, pointing out (as always) that figuring out exactly what is porn is quite subjective. That's true, but as long as no one is forced into the .xxx domain, it might make sense for certain sites that want the domain. He's not entirely against new TLDs, but wants them to have a specific purpose - such as mapping to telephone numbers, which some groups have proposed as well.

SUVs considered harmful to your head 03/11/2003 09:43 AM
A NYT article titled "Automak ers Agree to Work for S.U.V. Safety" addresses the dangers associated with a height differential between SUVs and cars in collisions.
"A lot of times, people die from their head hitting the hood of the striking car, so if you can add some sort of head protection, like a curtain, you can mitigate injuries and fatalities," said Chris Tinto, one of Toyota's top safety experts.
SUV makers ought to consider pushing for the application of helmet laws to drivers mistakenly choosing reasonably-sized vehicles. Perhaps these wimpy drivers should further consider helmets, knee-pads, and pedestrian roll-bars when outside their ill-considered puny vehicles to prevent against head-butts by "bullies."

I am also old enough to remember the swill that Americans drank and were pleased to call "coffee" before Howard Schultz swept down out of his damp PNW redoubt and clusterbombed us with franchises. It tasted like soggy cardboard, it was served in chipped diner porcelain that itself generally tasted of soap, and most importantly, with a very few exceptions, it was all you could get anywhere.

12/17/2004 06:36 PM
Imagine an average guy with an average job (tire salesman, cubicle-dwelling Java programmer, whatever) with two teenage kids.  The father is upset because his son is using heroin.  Now that the movie Ray is out the son can reply "if I stayed off the smack I might be able to get a job like yours dad but I'd rather be like Ray Charles."  The 17-year-old daughter is pregnant with her second child, which also earns her some verbal abuse from dad.  In the 1970s she would have to suffer this abuse but today when Buddhism is recognized as the provably optimal religion for human felicity she can say "sorry that you're upset dad; I was 'in the moment' when this baby was conceived."
