CC: New Features
06/17/2005 05:03 PMAfter notice and a period for
comments,
Creative Commons has versioned the attribution clause in our licenses.
The new clause does something cool I wanted to flag. The essence of
the change is to permit the copyright holder to specify what the
attribution should be. Thus attribution can be to the author, or to
another entity (e.g., the Wiki, or the journal in which the article
was first published), or both, as the licensor specifies.
The motivation for this change was both to formalize the CC-Wiki
license, which is a rebranded CC Attribution-ShareAlike licenses. With
this new attribution clause, a wiki can now specify that attribution
is back to the wiki. A second motivation was to help open access
publishing: Now the author can require a citation that would include
the original journal in which the article appeared — something many
journals we eager to have in return for permitting open access
publishing.

New Flickr features
New Flickr features
04/29/2004 05:01 AMFlickr, the image-sharing social software app, has rolled out a bunch
of new features, including this one, which does very intuitive
group-based access-control to files:
Photostreams are a new way to share your photos on Flickr, on simple
webpages where you control who sees what. All the photos you upload
automatically go into your Photostream, but different viewers see
different images, depending on their relationship to you.
How does it work?
* As always, you can make photos public or private. You can also
restrict the viewing to people who you have tagged with a specific
relationship ("only show this to friends or better").
* Public photos appear to everyone viewing your Photostream, but
you can exclude any public photo if you'd like.
* You can also see the collected streams of your friends' photos at
http://flickr.com/photos/friends/, and the latest public photos on
Flickr at http://flickr.com/photos/.

Well leave it to the folks at Google to roll out some new features in
Gmail. You can now import your address book from other online services
like Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL and of course your Outlook address book. My
outlook address book has nearly 800 legitimate entries that my
professional life revolves around. Nice to have that data backed up an

New Friendster features?
New Friendster features?
08/27/2004 01:47 PMSo this woman Troutgirl works at Friendster - I think she may even
be one of the lead programmers.
Jeremy Zawodny points to her post......
Bring me my social networking
One day last year, I was sitting in the lobby of a hotel in midtown
Manhattan with two friends. It was pouring rain outside, and we were
in low-energy mode. We were idly thinking about going to see a movie
at the theater across the street, but had no idea what was playing or
when. Our next best plan was to go somewhere for a drink before dinner
-- but again, no one had any good ideas about where. I also needed to
check my email to catch up on tentative plans with an acquaintance
further uptown -- a guy I knew well enough to exchange email with, but
not well enough to have his phone number -- but I didn't have a
computer or network access closer than my friends' room upstairs. And
of course I was sitting there thinking, "Dammit! It's 2003, and the
Interweb still sucks!"
That's what social networking should be, and unfortunately still
isn't. In the long run, I don't actually give a rat's ass what my
friends' favorite TV shows are -- because I never watch TV with them.
Social networking has to be useful and able to solve real problems,
not just be a cute (or pornographic) time-waster.
Of my interactions with social networking, the most positive ones
so far have been (excluding blogs):
1) Career contacts via LinkedIn. These have been almost all of high
quality, and save significant time for both me and the hiring manager.
Not that I'm looking for a job right now, but it's always nice to know
what's out there; and the introduction aspect is very valuable for
this use-case.
2) Being able to route new contacts through Friendster. I love
being able to say "Send me a Friendster message" to people I meet
through the blogosphere or conferences, instead of having to give out
my real email address or IM nick or phone number on the public
Internet. And did you know you can now block Friendster messages from
undesirable acquaintances?
3) Finding out via an Orkut group that one of my friends had quit
his job. He was so busy he didn't bother to let me know his lame self
via phone, email, blog, or carrier pigeon.
Given how much time I spent on social software, that's a pretty
disappointing payoff. Unfortunately, I don't just get to bitch about
it... I'm supposed to be making things better. So help me out here:
what social experiences could be usefully intermediated by a service
like Friendster, but aren't yet?
[troutgirl]
So that sure soudn sliek she's lookign for input on future features
for Friendster. Right on!
Maybe the 'new' Friendster will not only support FOAF, OpenMedia, OpenEvents AND OpenReviews - but
also lead us into an inter=-op world where our messages can freely
flow from one system to another.
We called that ThreadsML last
year.

New Security Features in ASP.NET 2.0
New Security Features in ASP.NET 2.0
07/08/2004 11:46 PMASP.NET 2.0 builds on ASP.NET 1.x to enable you to more easily create
and manage users, and to password-protect pages in a Web application.
The new framework includes new features for working with
authentication and authorization, which were designed to appeal to
both Web site administrators and developers.
Web site administrators can take advantage of the new Web Site
Administration Tool to create new users and roles, and to control
access to pages in a Web application. The Web Site Administration Tool
is a set of prewritten ASP.NET pages that can be used by individuals
with no programming skills to configure a Web application.
