In Darkness, Waiting for Dawn (Los
Angeles Times)
06/27/2004 05:04 AMLos Angeles Times - The deep "booms" come many mornings now. The
explosions, often from artillery shells wired together in the trunk or
backseat of a car, shear through the blazing summer heat. If you're
close, you're dead. A few steps removed and you're maimed. To those
who are spared, the odor of burnt flesh both sickens and reminds that
luck has been a partner today.
Richard Perle, Prince of Darkness,
strikes again
Richard Perle, Prince of Darkness,
strikes again
03/11/2003 06:17 PMAccording to
Joe Conanson of Salon, Richard Perle, the Prince of Darkness and
head of the Defense Advisory Board, yesterday called Seymour Hersh a
terrorist in
an interview
with CNN. This was because of an
article
that Hersh had written for the New Yorker detailing Perle's
business dealings, where he has been taking "investments" from defense
contractors ($20 million from Boeing alone) and apparently has been
trying to extort money from the same Saudis he has been attacking
publicly. Seymour Hersh is the journalist who broke the My Lai story
almost 25 years ago, and he has been doing some of the finest post-911
national security reporting in the New Yorker. Not always what the
Bush administration wanted reported, but I am not aware of any
challenges to his facts.
Talk about a despicable and cynical use of 911. Profit from your
position as head of the Defense Advisory Board, then call people
reveal your business dealings "terrorists." Add to that the damage
Perle has already done to NATO, and you have to ask, how more damage
will the Bush administration let this man do to our country? They
should remember, it wasn't people on the left who nicknamed Perle
the Prince of Darkness, it was his fellow Republicans in the
Reagan administration.

Global darkness shortage poses health

Global darkness shortage poses health
and sanity risk
03/22/2005 05:01 PMCory Doctorow:
There's a global shortage of darkness, and it's not good for us.
"A number of health and environmental problems are due to a loss of
darkness," says Dr David Crawford, executive director of the
International Dark-Sky Association, a group that campaigns against
light pollution. "And it will get worse as we creep -- or rush -- to a
24/7 world. All of life, all of it, has evolved with a day/night cycle
-- the circadian rhythm. It's essential to good health. Many studies
are now showing that those who go without a true day/night cycle are
adversely impacting their immune systems, and that's not good..."
Once at work, overriding the craving for dark and sleep comes at a
price. "They activate the `fight or flight' stress mechanism," says
Foster, "and we know that stress in turn can suppress the immune
system." Bright lights, caffeine and nicotine artificially maintain
stimulation. Perhaps unsurprisingly, studies show that nightshift
workers are at increased risk of a range of health problems, from
stress, constipation and stomach ulcers to depression, heart disease
and cancer. For example, a 2001 study in Seattle, based on interviews
with 800 women, found that females who worked the graveyard shift
could face a 60 percent increase in the risk of breast cancer.

Sweet BBQ
Sweet BBQ
04/27/2004 03:15 AMThe sun is out and the birds are singing and all my neighbors are
roasting flesh on the communal patio, so I've been thinking about
buying a BBQ. I think I just found it: the futuristic, portable Q:
Looking like a cross between the Starship Enterprise and a jet engine,
the Q BBQ can be carried around like a briefcase, but opens up
Transformer-style to become a stylish, stand-alone, gas-powered grill.
Crafted in durable steel, the Q uses inexpensive little propane tanks
that fit right inside the grill. You'll get hours of cooking time from
just one tank! It also has dual gas controls with a full range of
temperatures, so you can sear burgers on one side of the grill and
gently toast buns on the other, just by adjusting the flame.

Almost Sweet
Almost Sweet
01/09/2004 10:12 PMIt's somewhat vindicating to be ahead of the curve. Years ago, I
started to do whatever I could to eliminate excess sugar from my diet.
Now I'm learning that restaurants like PF Chang's and TGIF's are
beginning to offer low-carb menus. Even The Cheesecake Factory is now
using Splenda in their desserts! It was difficult to allow Jamba Juice
into my life - but I'd never touch fruit otherwise....

Oh, sweet London
Oh, sweet London
12/30/2003 01:24 AMThis city is most certainly a place where it's impossible to get
bored. Yesterday, after an early arrival, we went to see the Lord of
the Rings exhibition at Science Museum, which was very well worth the
rather steep 12£ admission: some of the miniatures are simply
amazing, Sauron and the ringwraiths can scare you witless even if seen
from a distance, but the best part are some of the paintings and
sketches: I felt like any weak-minded creature in front of the Ring as
I let my eyes rest upon the artwork of Sauron overseeing his troops at
the plains of Gorgoroth...
This must be mine - my
precioussss...
Afterwards, we were - completely accidentally - treated to the artwork
of Yann
Arthus-Bertrand, who had an outdoor exhibition of 3x2 meter
photographs outside the Natural History Museum. Go see the stuff this
guy shoots - some of it is quite simply breathtaking. Especially in
large size.
Anyhow, the tournament
looks like it's going to be a good one: plenty of nice people all
around, good location, relaxed schedule... Well, I might still lose
all of my games :)
Unfortunately, I am not able to get GPRS roaming work, so it looks
like no moblogging. I even forgot all of my USB leads home, so I
can't even upload any pictures. Oh well.
Sweet misery

09/26/2004 07:14 AMJust this morning, we were in the shower together, quoting
Eddie Izzard to
each other and laughing.
Now, a few measly hours later, my love is gone again,
going back North, and the house seems so awfully empty. The sun is
shining, it is warm outside, like a summer's day, and a lost fly flies
frantically about in my apartment, desperately seeking something but
only finding a place to die.
I still have packing to do, as I am leaving for Stuttgart in a couple
of hours.
I wrote some code yesterday morning, as she was still sleeping, as I
did not have the heart to wake her up.
I just miss her so terribly already.

07/14/2004 01:32 AM"Sixteen
Candles" Adds 20 More to the Cake
"Alas, convergent friends, we are aging. That seminal movie of the
1980s, "Sixteen
Candles," is celebrating its twentieth anniversary. To honor
the John Hughes classic, AMC is airing it at 8 tonight, followed by an
episode of its behind-the-scenes series, "Backstory"
in which they'll talk with stars Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael
Hall. Truly, for those of us in and around the high school class of
1986, this is as TiVo-worthy as it gets." [Lost Remote]
I happened to catch part of the movie tonight (wish I'd known about
the special afterwords - damn my late reading of my aggregator!), and
I laughed pretty hard when one of Farmer Ted's geek friends says,
"I'll bet you a dozen floppy disks you don't even get a kiss." Which,
of course, is followed up for a request for a video as proof, which
Anthony Michael Hall rejects because it would get duped "like a
hundred times" and show up everywhere. Ah, the days before P2P and the
internet....
