DVD to watch on 50th anniversary of
Normandy invasion
06/09/2004 12:35 PMStuck at home for the last couple of days with a sore throat and
earache and catching up on my TV viewing... Just finished "E
ye of Vichy", a 1993 collection of newsreels produced in France
during the period of the Vichy French government. As the victors
we've tended to write the history of World War II and forget that not
everyone was unhappy in the France of 1940-44.
The film is a chronological assemblage of newsreels with a touch of
commentary but mostly just subtitled translation. Occupation and
surrender initially usher in a great wave of optimism. The
French dream of a unified Europe from Japan through Siberia and west
to the shores of France and Spain. (Remember that at the time of
the German invasion the Soviets and Germans were allies).
It was upsetting to have lost the war in a matter of weeks but the
future of European union looked bright.
For the speakers featured in the newsreels "collaboration" is a
good word. They are proud of the millions of Frenchmen working
in Germany, fighting in the German army (mostly on the Russian front),
and building military hardware for the German army. Cheerful
young people are shown leaving France on special trains to take up
apprenticeships in German firms where they are then shown alongside
cheerful helpful German workers. A narrator notes that
France contributed more labor and war production to Germany than any
other country; invading France really seems to have been one of
Hitler's best ideas.
The Jews come in for a bit of beating in these newsreels as you
might expect. Jews are compared to rats as a danger to the human
race. They are cowardly but are still dangerous due to their
"superior numbers". [This is an odd claim considering that
French Jews numbered only about 225,000 in 1933, less than one percent
of the total French population. For an explanation of how any of these
Jews survived the war, see this
review of the book IBM and the Holocaust]
As in German films of the same era the final year of the war
brings a lot of sad coverage of bombed-out homes and cities. The
British and American air forces are the villains here, of course,
bombing the innocent civilians that they were hypocritically claiming
to be saving. There is a clever animated film in which airplanes
piloted by Disney characters drop "Made in USA" bombs on the home
of some French suburbanites who'd been chatting about how much
they were looking forward to liberation by the English and all of the
beloved foods they'd be able to eat again as well as the English
cigarettes that they'd be smoking.
If you're a World War II buff this is worth seeing because of the
50th anniversary of Normandy. If you're an imperialist it might
be worth seeing as an example of how to make invading and occupying a
country pay off big time economically (cf. American invasion of Iraq
2003 for what not to do).

04/06/2005 02:38 AMThe Digital Music Doctor has released a new analysis which assesses
the attempts of two pro audio software leaders, Cakewalk Sonar and
Steinberg Cubase, to make inroads into the loop composition software
market. Sonic Foundry Acid (since acquired by Sony) defined that
market when it was released in 1998 and remains the leader. However,
recently Sonar and Cubase have been moving aggressively to make
inroads into that space. [PRWEB Apr 6, 2005]

For those unfamiliar with US/Mexico border politics, these are the
volunteer border patrol militias comprised of heavily armed,
grumpy-looking white people who have self-organized to stem the flood
of wannabe janitors, dishwashers, and nannies who threaten our
national security. Ebner's report will appear in

Gracias a Mark Ebner, periodista
y amigo de Boing Boing, por los fotos. Su reportaje será publicado en

The settlement, which received preliminary approval on July 29, 2004
from the First Judicial District Court for the State of New Mexico,
will make vouchers available to class members that may be used to buy
any manufacturer's desktop, laptop and tablet computers; any software
available for sale to the general public and used with those computer
products; and specified peripheral devices for use with computers. The
total amount of vouchers issued will depend on the number of class
members who claim vouchers, and the maximum value of the vouchers that
may be issued to class members will be $31.5 million.

Things that I have seen in Mexico so far
Things that I have seen in Mexico so far
12/17/2004 06:36 PMHere are some random things that I have observed so far on this
trip to Mexico:
- eight Mexicans speaking English to each other all night at a
dinner party so that their one American guest (me) would not feel left
out
- a family gathered around the grave of a loved one offering me a
drink of whiskey
- families staying up all night with musicians and refreshments
- two Japanese tourists, complete with nametags and three cameras,
marching in Santa Maria del Tule's "Parade of Death"
- three tall white Americans dressed by REI and bedizened with
cameras in a small village's graveyard saying "we're not
tourists, we're photographers"
- tens of thousands of flowers for sale in an open-air market with
upbeat Latin music playing
- enormous banners hanging from the sides of churches and cathedrals
arguing against the legalization of abortion (abortion is currently
illegal in Mexico but if you have USD$3000 you can get breast
augmentation, laser hair removal, Viagra ("30% off" according to the
big signs in Oaxacan pharmacies), and a procedure in a discreet
private clinic)
- Spanish-speakers cringing in pain when I pronounce Oaxaca
"Oh-axe-a-ka" (to be consistent with the English pronunciation of a
hard "ex" in "Mexico")
- multi-acre downtown cactus garden from the balcony of one of the
world's best prehispanic art museums
- a brass band playing and costumed locals dancing for hours
underneath the balcony next to my restaurant table on the main square
in Oaxaca
In addition to seeing a lot of interesting and fun things I found a
good job to apply for once I get my commercial helicopter
rating. It seems that on the north shores of the Hawaiian
islands there are surfers who pay to be dropped from a
helicopter into the middle of a swell. From there they get
onto a jetski and are towed to the top of the 18-24 foot waves that
are typical in the Hawaiian winter. One would need an
endorsement to be legal to carry surfboards externally strapped to the
helicopter skids but otherwise it didn't sound too challenging and
you'd be meeting cool people all day.

Some pictures from Mexico City
01/07/2004 04:22 PMhttp:
//www.photo.net/philg/digiphotos/200311-mexico-city/ contains
some snapshots from the recent trip to Mexico City. I'm trying
to travel light these days, which means no laptop and no camera.
For this trip I borrowed a Casio Exilim EX-Z3, a truly tiny 3 MP
camera. As you can see the results are fairly dismal. I
attribute the poor results to the lack of a decent viewfinder in point
and shoot cameras. You can't see what you're
photographing. The little viewfinder window is tiny on the Casio
and highly inaccurate. You don't know whether or not the camera
has focussed properly. Plus of course there are a lot of weird
modes in which you can get the camera.
On the plus side the Casio is only about the size of a Palm
organizer and barely heavier so you truly can take it with you
everywhere. I don't think I'll buy one, though. The
smallest Canons are larger but seem less compromised as photographic
machines.
