Tunewear on Wednesday announced the Icewear shuffle -- a new protective silicone case made for Apple's iPod shuffle. The new cover is made of high-density transparent silicone similar in composition to the material used to make diving masks. It is part of the same family of protective covers previously released for iPod minis and fourth-generation iPods. It will cost US$19.95 when it is released at the end of May, 2005.

Apple's newest AirPort Extreme Base Station can operate usi ng Power over Ethernet (PoE), making it possible for IT personnel in corporations, schools and other institutional settings to install the device in locations that lack easy access to an AC outlet, such as crawlspaces or areas above suspended ceilings. That presumes they're using an Ethernet switch or hub that can deliver PoE, however, which many businesses don't have. Now MacWireless offers its own PoE solution comprising a pair of adapters that convert a standard Ethernet cable into one that carries power as well. The US$69.98 interface works over up to 330 feet of Ethernet cable.

The Serial ATA (SATA)-based system utilizes four Hitachi-manufactured 400GB hard disk drives to achieve the mammoth capacity. The G5Jam kit includes a cooling baffle plate, PCI-based SATA host card and cables. The US$3,499.95 1.6TB offering joins other G5Jam configurations starting with a do-it-yourself kit without drives for $499.95.

The Dunhill cigarette company has made a cigarette-case-style case for the iPod, which, in classinc Dunhill hyperbole, they describe as "ergonomic and luxurious." One thing I've learned since moving to the UK: anytime something is described as "luxurious" (i.e. "Luxury hot cocoa") it is anything but. Nevertheless, the Dunhill cases look pretty rad. Although I don't see it on their website anywhere yet (and it may not even ever make it to the States), Taiwanese peripheral manufacturer Acon (makers of the "Cable Ass'y") has a new addition to their Power Runner line, the PR-2500, designed specifically for the Apple iPod. There are other external, rechargeable battery packs for the iPod -- and certainly ones that are better looking -- if anyone actually gets around to importing this one, it might be worth a glance. The 14-hour battery life and LED charge-state indicators are especially nice.
