Software necessary to copy video from a

Friends of mine have a child afflicted with a kind of autism.  A parent of an autistic child has developed some free software (Windows-only) that teaches kids by asking them to perform tasks and showing them short video clips if they perform the task.  My friends own a collection of DVDs that they would like to transfer to the PC and chop up into 10-second segments.  I'm pretty sure that they can handle the chopping once they get their DVD into a standard Windows video format (.avi?).  As I understand it, Hollywood tries to make this as difficult as possible.  How can my friends work around the various encryption and other format conversion issues?  This would be on a WinXP machine.

Archos to make personal video players
that can copy from DVDs
12/02/2003 01:23 AM
One of the biggest problems with personal video players is that there isn't a whole lot of legal content to watch on them. Because it's illegal to copy a DVD to a computer, and most people won't want one of these things just to watch home videos, the most likely source of content for these things right now is P2P file-sharing networks like Kazaa, where it's not too hard to find MPEGs of The Sopranos and The Simpsons. To get around all that, manufacturer Archos is going to start putting special chips from Texas Instruments into their personal video players that supposedly make it possible to copy movies from DVDs and watch them on the player. How can free software compete with
commercial developers?
11/05/2003 10:55 AM
The amazing thing about the free vs. proprietary software race is that free software is in it at all. With all the resources larger proprietary software companies have at their command, you'd think their products would be unfailingly easy to use, virtually bug-free, and priced so low that no one would mind paying for them. But this is not the case. Why isn't it? You'd think a software company full of carefully-selected programmers, project leaders, market researchers, quality control personnel, professional documentation writers, and a technical support staff would have no trouble beating any open source project -- with both hands tied behind its corporate back -- even if it gave the open source project a 3 km lead in a 5 km race.

Imagine you go out buy a Game install it play it several months and then remove it from your computer you would expect the game to clean up after itself. Apparently Starforce copy protection is embedded in some games and installs itself onto Gamers hard-drives and when the games are removed the Starforce code remains. This has led to performance issues and being these gaming companies assume every consumer is a criminal. They have decided invading these peoples computers is a good for business. If I wanted to copy a game I would just go on the net and download the cracked version. Gaming companies need to start treating their customers like customers instead of criminals. [Techdirt]

I recommend you read the article on Broadband Reports they have links to clean up tools.
