I wonder if that means T-Mobile will carry it in the US? Igor Carron of the DARPA Grand Challenge Pegasus Team writes, "we are committing ourselves to provide the rest of the robotics community some of the data we gather during our trial runs. We expect these trial runs to be more sophisticated as we go along. Probably one of the unusual decision we have made for this vehicle is to not have range sensors such as laser SICK, ultrasound or radar. Our sensor module features an IMU with information on acceleration (3-axis), rotation information (3-axis), heading (3-axis), a GPS and one or several cameras (.jpg or .bmp taken at 10-20 Hz). Because we do not believe the issue is about how to gather data but to make sense of them, these data are provided free of charge and are licensed under the GNU GPL."

More Mobile File Sharing: This Time From
Nokia
09/14/2004 02:55 PM
For quite some time, we've been wondering why the music industry was so excited about the money they were making from ringtones, since they all seemed to ignore the lessons they learned the past few years online: by overpricing ringtones and making them difficult to get, they were going to be taken by surprise when the "Napster for mobile phones" showed up. It appears that it's getting closer -- but the most interesting part is that the developments seem to be coming from large companies rather than a kid in a dorm room. Last week we wrote about SK Telecom's new file sharing application, and today's New Scientist reports that Nokia Research is working on their own file sharing application. They admit that it was more difficult than they expected due to the unreliable nature of mobile phone networks, but that it is possible. As the article notes, the issue (once again) isn't really technical, but how the recording industry will respond (easy to predict that one: badly). Of course, what the recording industry still doesn't seem to understand is that these applications don't go away, no matter how much they complain (and sue). The next trick, though, will be seeing how developers take the idea of P2P one step further once they realize that by adding P2P in a mobile world, it lets users do more than just swap songs.

nokia_9300_large.jpg imageYou guys should know by now I'm a big advocate of integrated QWERTY keyboards. I just never got into Graffiti and the like, and typing up articles on my Revo while everybody else was scratching around with a stylus pretty much convinced me. So when it's clear that the new Nokia 9300 Communicator is taking a lot of its design cues from the old Psion hardware, it's certainly enough to make me stop and take notice.

Nokia 9300 Communicator Interview

Nokia 9300 Communicator Interview 09/10/2004 07:04 AM

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/nokia_9300_int.jpg" alt="nokia_9300_int.jpg image" width="220" height="139" class="right border"/>All About Symbian has a nice article with Mark Squires, Nokia's UK Head of Communications. It's a bit fawning, but considering the source I think that's somewhat understandable, and it does go a long way in explaining the mindset behind the 9300's relative lack of features compared to its big brother, the Nokia 9500. According to Squires, the customer base using the 9500 simply didn't want Wi-Fi and a camera, so they pulled those features out, scaled the whole thing down, and went for something more svelte and simple.

There's an implication that Americans want too many features crammed in, while Europeans are satisfied with something straightforward and "smart." And that's fine, except the planned price for the 9300 is around $850 - seems like a lot of money for a 150MHz smartphone with no Wi-Fi and limited features, doesn't it?

09/09/2004 09:00 AM

NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

Nokia 7710? 09/21/2004 10:38 AM

Nokia_7710.jpg imageNothing is more fun to write about than mystery gadgets that have no backstory and no included information, but sometimes you gots to take what you gets. So here you go: an unnamed Series 90 phone/pda/thing prototype from Nokia. I'm not even positive it's Series 90, but the widescreen would certainly imply that. You can be sure it's from Nokia, though, because it looks like a crappy science fiction chess board.

The picture is labelled Nokia 7710, for whatever that's worth. If you recall, the 7700 was the Series 90 showcase phone that Nokia cancelled before it hit the market.

The GPS unit uses the same battery and charge plug as most Nokia phones, so you can use your existing charge to go along with it.

The headset should be out later this year, while the GPS unit isn't scheduled until Q1 2005.
