Software Defined Radios (SDRs) are mobile devices that can be reconfigured over the air. Users could download new services from network operators, and even have voice and email services provided by different networks. The SCOUT project has studied how SDRs will be regulated and marketed. Six multifunction printers for Linux

Six multifunction printers for Linux 12/05/2003 05:32 AM
Have you been looking for an "All-in-one" (aka known as MFP, multi-function printer) for your Linux desktop? So have we, with somewhat mixed results. We found no MFPs in our price range (under $500.00) which are shipped with drivers for Linux. But we did find a number of MFPs which are usable on Linux machines, thanks to free software drivers available either with your Linux distribution or on the Internet. Be warned, however, that not every feature or function of many of the printers we found work with the free drivers. Here's the story on what we found, along with six specific MFPs that work with free software drivers and Linux to consider during your holiday shopping.

SMC Offers Multifunction Traveling
Gateway
08/03/2004 01:04 PM
SMC has thrown the kitchen sink into its traveler's access point, a street price $99 device that has the full complement of Wi-Fi options: The AirPort Express ($129) from Apple may be cute and small, but the SMC has four modes versus AirPort Express's 2 1/2. Express can act as a client (for streaming music and USB only), a WDS relay or remote (to Apple or compatible gateways only), or a standalone 802.11g/WPA gateway. I count Apple's client mode as 1/2 since it can't handle traffic over its Ethernet port as a bridge in that mode, apparently. The SMC--trippingly off the tongue call it EZ Connect™ g 2.4GHz 802.11g Wireless Traveler’s Kit (SMCWTK-G)--can act as an access point, an Ethernet bridge (so full MAC masquerading onto any network), Ethernet bridge, repeater, and point-to-point or point-to-multipoint bridge. (Those last two are similar WDS modes, so I won't count them separately.) SMC doesn't mention weight or the size of the power cord. The Express has an integral power plug, but you can get an extension cord as part of an audio/power kit for $39. The SMC unit can draw power over USB, too. [link via Tom's Networking]...

Lightweight scripting/extension
languages

Lightweight scripting/extension
languages
12/21/2003 09:29 PM
Extension laguages are designed to be embedded in applications to support customization of the application behavior. Common scripting languages, like Perl and Python, are fairly "large" with powerful run-time engines and libraries and are widely available and "script" writters usually assume their stand-alone existences in the deployment environment.

However, if one is looking for a language that's small enough so its source can be embedded in the distribution of and built as part of the application, Python and Perl may be "overweight." For the real lightweight choices there are Lua and Tinyscheme. Are there others? What are people's preferences and opinions regarding lightweight extension languages?

Developing Reliable Software with
Scripting Languages

Developing Reliable Software with
Scripting Languages
12/18/2002 12:08 PM
In this interview of William Guttman, a professor of economics and technology at Carnegie Mellon University who is director of The Sustainable Computing Consortium, I was struck by this statement: Q: Are certain types of products or software vendors worse than others in terms of their record on quality? Guttman: I have a colleague who says bugs are agnostic. No matter the type of application it is, you can count on finding 30 bugs per 1,000 lines of code on average. I then found Prof. Thomas Huckle, saying much the same thing: INTEL: no more than 80-90 Bugs in Pentium. Standard Software: 25 bugs per 1000 lines of program. Good Software: 2 errors per 1000 lines. Space Shuttle Software: This seems to be a pretty good justification for using scripting languages. Of course, we still need to plan and be aware of the software engineering issues in developing reliable software. Here are a few things that occured to me. I'm sure you can think of more: 1. Scripting makes it too easy to slap up a piece of code quickly. I would suggest you slap your design first. Use a design methodology. The use of popular techniques such as OOP (or structured programming) provides a more disciplined approach to developing software. Informal evidence suggests that using object-oriented programming forces the developer to be more careful in the design of the software. Scripting languages that provide good OOP facilities should be encouraged. 2. Scripting languages have more options than bisexuals because they have polymorphic types (I have never liked the term weak-typing because it suggests something inferior. I prefer polymorphic typing -- it has the cachet of a poly-syllable adjective :-). One of the criticism with this approach is that very little parameter checking is done by the compiler. To me this is a benign vice, but I agree that with large teams where well-defined interfaces are important that this is an issue. I have three suggestions here: (a) Use classes to store important variables, because then you can use set and get methods for type-checking, and pass instances of these classes around instead of variables. To promote heterosexuality i have this example: function Reproduction($father,$mother) { $sperm = $father->GetSperm(); $egg = $mother->GetEgg(); return "$sperm meets $egg"; } In the above example, we have type checking of $father and $mother (at run-time), because $father has GetSperm() and $mother must have GetEgg(). (b) Use intelligent IDE's that display the function prototypes as you type (what is the best one for PHP - does anyone know?) (c) Programming by contract. Techniques such as this provide additional assurance about the quality of the code (note that programming by contract is as applicable to C or Java or Fortran as scripting languages). See also what Bertrand Meyer has to say. 3. Scripting languages need fewer raging egos and more team players. What i mean by this is that scripting languages need to balance the needs of hackers who want a quick fix with software managers who need good support for team development, in particular offering effective ways (methodologies?) for separating code and content, data and presentation, and neat software engineering concepts such as data hiding and namespace support. In conclusion, as Tom DeMarco pointed out in his book PeopleWare, it is not technology that prevents software success, but people. So higher level tools that aid people in their work are to be encouraged. Looking down at scripting languages because it lacks this or that is short sighted because it is the now and the future of computing. "tri" I've been drafting this essay for a while (this is my response to the Bertrand Meyer quote on pointer arithmetic and reliability), and it looks like the recent Multi-Tier debate makes it a good time to release it, even though i think that it could still do with some more shaving and fine-tuning. Will Gmail support International
Languages?
06/19/2004 04:53 PM

My wife has a Hotmail account that is defaulted to Japanese. She got tired of Outlook acting weird and sometimes not converting the incoming message correctly or when she would send a e-mail and the receiver getting junk characters.

So I set her up a Hotmail account and she now has no issues getting or sending Japanese e-mail. Well I was able to score her a Gmail account last week and after we got it setup we went looking for language options. From everything we could see volunteers had already done the language translation as a volunteer page said it as 100% done. But there was no way to turn on Japanese as the default language. It appears they will have a international language option but for now it is only English if anyone has figured out how to change the default language we would appreciate a e-mail to shokoc at gmail.com

Her first reaction to Gmail and she is not a techie is that it is a lot faster than Hotmail and will be switching as soon as they enable International characters.

Report
02/01/2005 08:48 PM
Report Briefing: Late in 2004, China witnessed a flurry of new partnerships and announcements related to Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) promising to bring high-quality video to both computers and television sets. Besides offering customized, interactive video services, IPTV is envisioned as a low-cost solution for expanding the reach of Internet services into China's huge television audience. Behind this potentially vast market, however, lie serious obstacles: regulatory confusion, a lack of unique content, and serious threats from competing technologies and services. In this report, Norson looks at the promise of IPTV and the substantial threats this new technology faces in China. [PRWEB Jan 31, 2005]

SysAdmin to SysAdmin: Scripting
languages
06/16/2004 03:54 AM
Theoretically, the ultimate goal for a system administrator, whether you're in a large data center or a small home network, is to script yourself out of a job. The more you can automate tasks, the more time you can spend researching new technologies, deploying new services, and playing Quake! Experienced administrators generally have at least three scripting languages under their belts for regular use, and probably have books that cover one or two more for occasional use. Beginners, however, sometimes have a hard time deciding which tools to devote their learning cycles to. This article aims to help those users come to grips with the many options available.
