VoIP and Wireless Security

VoIP and Wireless Security 04/19/2005 06:17 AM
My company blocks the Skype Web site because it would open some of our company’s ports and giving hackers the chance to break in. According to this article, VoIP is a threat to wireless security. There’s a price to pay for using a free product. It’s possible to get secure VoIP, but it means subscribing to a service from a phone company and paying a monthly fee just as you would for your other phone…

Do Area Codes Matter In An Age Of
Wireless And VoIP?

Do Area Codes Matter In An Age Of
Wireless And VoIP?
09/07/2004 03:08 AM
Do area codes really matter any more? These days, I've gotten used to plenty of people I know having mobile phone numbers from some distant place where they used to live, rather than where they live now. With so many plans no longer having any real marginal costs for long distance calls, it hasn't much mattered, other than as a status symbol. The same is starting to come true in the VoIP world, as well, as people are even purposely ordering VoIP phone numbers from locations that don't represent where they live. It almost seems like the only purpose for area codes these days is for status symbol purhcases (note, for example, the distress of many when they discovered you couldn't get Manhattan's high-rent 212 as a mobile number but had to settle for something hideous like 917). So is it time to stop identifying phone numbers by location, and maybe start identifying it by type of line? It seems some are going in that direction. Reuters notes that the UK is about to launch 056 as an area code for VoIP phone numbers, and Jeff Pulver notes they're not the first -- as Japan has similarly assigned 050 for "non-geographic" numbers. Jeff suggests that some experiments be run in the US for a similar sort of non-geographic prefix. While having additional numbers available makes sense as more numbers are in use, is there really a need for specifically non-geographical numbers? As noted above, it's beginning to happen naturally that numbers which used to have a geographical meaning, increasingly have none.

Pure VoIP Won't Be Regulated, Phone-Like
VoIP Might Be

Pure VoIP Won't Be Regulated, Phone-Like
VoIP Might Be
02/12/2004 02:16 PM
As expected, the FCC ruled on the Pulver VoIP petition today, and gave something of a split decision. They claim that "pure" VoIP systems shouldn't be regulated, since they're just like email or any other internet application. However, they're reserving judgment on VoIP systems that more resemble regular phone service, such as Vonage that touch on the PSTN. This seems like something of a cop out, and may be difficult to sustain over time. Most of the "pure" VoIP systems are offering (or planning to offer) gateways that let them connect to the telephone system. Where do they fall along the regulatory spectrum? This would take away the incentive of VoIP providers to connect to regular phone service, creating two different levels of phone service, rather than connecting the two and leading to a more orderly migration. Of course, it still remains to be seen what sorts of regulations they will include for PSTN-connected VoIP. Chances are, they're talking about adding in 911 service and phone-tapping abilities.

Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure

Adventures in wireless security: Why
home and corporate wireless LANs are
insecure
06/03/2004 03:44 AM
The meat of the article is: “…Wireless security recommendations: Change your system defaults – everyone knows them. Change the Admin and SNMP passwords. Change the IP network range. Also change the Server Set ID (SSID). The SSID is a unique identifier for your wireless hub/router. The default SSID is set in the factory is definitely not unique. Don’t broadcast the SSID. While you can change the default ID, that does little if your hub or router broadcasts that SSID. Enable Wireless Encryption. WEP or something similar can be compromised, but it makes it significantly more difficult to compromise your information. The larger the key length, the better. Enable Shared Key Authentication. The default Open System setting lets anyone connect to your network with very minimal effort. Change your SNMP Community String. Create a Community String like it is a strong password. Enable MAC Address Codes. Again, this makes it more difficult for a hacker to compromise your home network. Set Wireless LAN cards to Infrastructure Mode. Most cards have the default Ad Hoc mode, which is less secure. Don’t rely only on the broadband firewall. A firewall at your home’s Internet entry point is critical. However, you should still have personal firewalls on all computers on your network, in case something makes it through your home’s firewall or a hacker does make it onto your network.”
