Long Distance Wi-Fi
Long Distance Wi-Fi
08/09/2004 10:16 PMTeens' wireless feat could be world record: Quite a feat took
place at DefCon.
In the end, their 55-mile amplified connection exceeded last year's
winner by 20 miles. Then they turned off their amplifiers and broke
the record for an unamplified connection at the same distance.
While not yet confirmed, the connection appears to be a world
record for a ground connection. The Guinness record for Wi-Fi
connection is about 192 miles, achieved in 2002 by Swedish Wi-Fi
equipment maker Alvarion and the Swedish Space. But that record was
achieved using a Swedish weather balloon, which some experts say isn't
comparable to a ground measurement because there are fewer obstacles
to block a signal.
The Swedish team also used amplification in setting the mark, while
the DefCon team maintained its connection even after turning off the
amplification.

Those Free AOL Minutes Don't Help When
You Rack Up $3,400 In Long Distance
04/19/2004 03:09 PMA New Hampshire resident was upset that his AOL dialup kept kicking
him offline, so he ran AOL's AutoFix program, which he said fixed the
problem. He also says that the program (without him realizing it)
changed the dialup phone number to a long distance toll number -
something he only realized
wh
en a $3,400 phone bill arrived. AOL claims that it's not their
problem, saying that the AutoFix program doesn't change the phone
number, so that couldn't be the problem. However, now the New
Hampshire Attorney General is stepping in to ask AOL to go to
mediation to settle this issue - even though the actual bill is due to
Verizon. It sounds like more details are needed, but now that the
press is covering the story in a way that makes AOL look bad, expect
them to change their tune and play nice.

The Loneliness of the Long-Distance
Podcaster (Podcatcher?)
03/14/2005 06:24 PMA few months ago I joined a loc
al marathon training group, and every Saturday the group meets to
do a long run. Due to other plans I had to miss the last long run, so
I made up for it by running 10.5 miles by myself. Now, running that
kind of distance with a group is fun, but doing it alone can be
reeaallly boring. So, the night before the run I configured
FeedDemon to download several podcasts and synch them with my iPod while I
slept.
During the run I listened to snippets from these podcasts, which
included Chris Pirillo's interviews with Tim Bray and Steve Gillmor, followed by the interview
with Stewart
Copeland and audio of the Web 2.0:
Music is a Platform panel from IT Conversations.
Being able to listen to new podcasts helped me survive the run
without dropping from boredom. I was even tempted to continue running
so I could keep listening - but the next day's soreness made me
thankful that I stopped when I did :)

Distance Doctoring, Distance Nursing And
Distance Learning... All Coming Back
Distance Doctoring, Distance Nursing And
Distance Learning... All Coming Back
05/12/2004 03:58 AMThe internet makes it easier to communicate with people over large
distances, and for years we've been hearing about the power of
"distance" everything. More recently, some of that talk had died down
after the early promises of distance learning/doctoring/whatever
failed to live up to its early hype. However, it appears that the
distance concept is coming back into fashion. One after the other, we
just came across three such stories. First, is the news of a hospital
in Michigan that is using a
robot with a video screen for a head to let remote doctors talk
to and examine patients. The doctor's can control the robot from
another location (such as home) in order to look over a patient
without being there in person. Of course, the idea isn't to replace
the need for the doctor to be present, but to make it easier in
situations when the doctor is away and is needed quickly (such as to
look over something in the middle of the night when they're home).
Meanwhile, over in the Netherlands, it's not the doctors who get to
stay home, but the patients, who can now use a
webc
am system to communicate with nurses. The idea is to help out the
elderly who are confined to their homes but can't afford to have a
healthcare worker visiting them on a regular basis. Meanwhile,
outside of the healthcare field it appears that even
e-learning is making a comeback, as companies are using it more
strategically, to help keep employees up-to-date and trained - but not
relying on it as a full replacement for training programs. No matter
what, it looks like another bunch of concepts discredited during the
boom and bust years are now making a comeback.

03/06/2004 02:02 AMI'm in the market for a cheap US dial-up internet provider. I'm
connected via broadband most of the time but I really need to get a
backup modem account. In the UK, dialup accounts are available for
free with the cost of the phone call as the only charge applied. I
haven't heard of any similar deals in the states, so I'm looking for
recommendations. I won't be using it very often so the cheaper the
better.

Long Distance Teleportation Could Lead
To Quantum Computing
08/22/2004 03:16 PMPhysicists have carried out successful teleportation with particles of
light over a distance of 600m across the River Danube in Austria.
When physicists say "teleportation", they are describing the
transfer of key properties from one particle to another without a
physical link. Quantum teleportation relies on an aspect of physics
known as "entanglement"; whereby the properties of two
particles can be tied together even when they are far apart. Einstein
called it "spooky action at a distance".
Long distance teleportation is crucial if dreams of superfast quantum
computing are to be realised.
"The really interesting question for us was whether we could do
this outside a lab setting, in the environment used for today's
fibre-optic communications," co-author Rupert Ursin of the
University of Vienna told BBC News Online. "This is very
important if you are talking about investing money in quantum
communication."
Quantum teleportation could be harnessed for fast, powerful computers
or communication networks.

Mobile Phones Used For The Most Complex
Roll Call Ever
Mobile Phones Used For The Most Complex
Roll Call Ever
04/13/2005 05:18 PMThere have been all these stories recently about how kids were using
mobile phones to cheat in schools and how schools want to ban them.
Of course, what people should be doing is looking for ways to use the
phones to
combat the cheating, or to be useful in other ways.
Unfortunately, though, it's not entirely clear that this method,
created by a lecturer at Aomori University in China really does the
trick. As pointed out by
textuall
y.org, someone has created one of the
mo
re complex attendance taking systems around. The professor gives
out a number at the beginning of class. All students are then
expected to text that number to an administrative account. Of course,
that alone is easy to get around -- so the system then randomly
selects five to ten students to send a message back to, and those
students have to stand up in class and state their name. This,
obviously, gets around the loophole where a student just tells a
friend who's skipping what the daily number is. Of course, this seems
like a pretty complex system for what we used to call
roll
call. Also, since when did college professors really care about
whether or not their students actually made it to class?

Online
Wired: Why Your Next Phone Call May Be
Online
01/04/2004 11:58 PMA brief "how this stuff works" piece on VoIP I wrote for the current
issue of
Wired Magazine:
Regional and long-distance carriers, facing extinction, are lobbying
government officials for protection. California, Minnesota, and at
least nine other states are pushing for some sort of regulation, and
the FCC is weighing its options. Meanwhile, big telecom is joining the
party. International voice carrier Teleglobe is acquiring a VoIP
wholesaler, and others are poised to follow suit. Cox, Comcast,
Cablevision, Qwest, and Time Warner are also rolling out VoIP
offerings. Their existing customer bases, fat pipe IP infrastructures,
and coveted "last mile" connectivity create a powerful triple threat.
And, as more telecommunications monopolies around the world open up
for competition, the cost savings promised by VoIP seems destined to
spark a market shift as dramatic as the one that followed US telecom
deregulation decades ago.
