How to Create a WYSIWYG Rich Text Editor
in JavaScript. Pt. 1

On forums, there are many features that allow users to compose richly formatted text with animated emoticons, etc., but you can't see what the finished work will look like until it's posted or unless a preview is generated. Here, author Guyon Roche uses Javascript to show you how your text will look as you write it. 0102

Today, you'll learn about different methods for handling keyboard input and the RichEdit control. Keyboard input is handled by two functions; onKeyPress() and onKeyDown(). The RichEdit constructor creates the necessary HTML elements to display the control. By Guyon Roche. 0210

TextWrangler 2.0 is a text editor for anyone who has to handle large volume of text -- clerical tasks, code writing, or Web site maintenance. It doesn't share BBEdit's advanced authoring and code management tools, but you can't argue with the price. By Andrew T. Laurence, Macworld

Cross-browser Rich Text Editor (RTE)
added to Roller
12/19/2004 03:30 PM

I was doing some Roller testing today and I found that the old Midas-based editor for Mozilla/Firefox is broken. I searched around for docs on Midas and found out about RTE, written by Kevin Roth, an open source cross-platform WYSIWYG editor that works with recent versions of IE, Mozilla, and Firefox (sadly Safari is not supported). Instead of fixing editor-midas.jsp, I replaced it with editor-rte.jsp. So now, thanks to Mr. Roth, Roller 1.0 will include a cross-browser WYSIWYG editor. Here's a screenshot to prove it:

SMS Speed Record Sets Guinness World Record

"A 23-year-old Singaporean woman appears to have set a world record for sending text messages over a cellphone, underlining Asia's growing obsession with cellplhone technology.

Kimberly Yeo thumbed 26 words in 43.24 seconds into her phone, beating a world record of 67 seconds for the same words set by a Briton in September 2003, said Singapore's dominant telephone carrier, Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), on Monday.

Cellphones are an ubiquitous accessory in technology-savvy Singapore where more than four out of five people own a handset, giving the wealthy city-state one of the world's highest cellphone penetration rates.

At a contest in front of a department store on Sunday, Yeo was among 125 people timed by SingTel and a panel of independent officials to see how fast they could type the following 160-character message: 'The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.'...

Yeo, who won a S$17 500 (about R64 000) in cash for her nimble thumbs, said she sends out about an average of 1 500 text messages a month to friends and family." [iol, via textuall y.org]

Planet Sun 04/21/2004 10:39 PM
Several people have pointed to Planet Sun, a rather good aggregation of all the known Sun bloggers. It’s done by David Edmondson, whose own uncollected thoughts is well worth visiting. Also worthy of note in recent days is Mike Duigou on Complexity, which totally captures the mental pain consequent on confronting a big new hairy URI. (But that whole Java.net space is organized in a weird way that I don’t quite get; hmm...). Also, Planet Sun is a clever name... for the next such project how about Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun? [For the under-40s, that’s a druggie-Sixties-music reference -Ed. (Yeah, but a great tune! -Tim)]
