New Fink releases.

New Fink releases. 06/17/2005 05:41 PM
Three new Fink releases are available today: version 0.8.0 (for 10.4), version 0.7.2 (for 10.3), and version 0.6.4 (for 10.2). All three releases include source files, binary packages, and a Fink installer for new users. The new release for 10.4 includes all currently-available "stable" packages in source and binary form: there are 1565 of these, which constitutes more than 80% of the 1909 packages available in the 10.3 release. Work continues by the fink developers on bringing more of the stable packages to Tiger. The new release for 10.2 will be the last official release for that version of Mac OS X. Although no further updates (not even security updates) will be provided by the Fink team, we anticipate that the 0.6.4 release will be usable for years to come. Users upgrading to 10.4 can now simply issue a fink selfupdate command, followed by sudo /sw/lib/fink/postinstall.pl (for first-time updaters on 10.4), fink scanpackages and sudo apt-get update. We don't recommend bootstrapping at the moment, since bootstrapping does not work with the newly-released XCode 2.1 from Apple.

W's False pride

W's False pride 09/24/2004 11:57 AM

This is interesting: Republicans for Humility.

When I look at the W presidency and closer at the man himself and ask myself why I would not vote for him, humility ranks at the top (the lack of it, actually). I've seen time and time again, whenever he is asked a challenging question, or given the opportunity to reflect on past decisions, and Bush will respond in the most ways that approach complete arrogance.

Progress is continuing well in Iraq. I've never made a mistake in my presidency. Rumsfeld is doing a terrific job. The economy is strong and turning a corner.

Some write it off as optimism, but when he was asked about any bad decisions he's made earlier this year and said he's never made a mistake, he lost all credibility with me. Mistakes aren't always a bad thing, they're an opportunity to learn. And great men make thousands of mistakes on their way to greatness. When I heard him state his complete lack of mistakes, one word came to mind: Pride.

For a religious man, he should know about the sing of Pride and even to the non-religious, most folks have a low tolerance for arrogance. The line between "That guy is really optimistic" and "That jerk thinks he's perfect in every way" is a fine one.

It's great to see a republican-run site asking for some humility. People aren't perfect. Even great leaders make mistakes. The greatest leaders we've ever had took the time to reflect on them, acknowledge them, and repair any damage caused. When it comes to W, I'm not seeing any of that, just a complete lack of introspection and humility.

Plausible lies and false truths

Plausible lies and false truths 03/14/2005 04:25 PM

While wandering around the Natural History Museum in London, I came up with a little game** that I'd like to try out on you all. The challenge is to come up with a statement that's difficult to tell whether it's true or false, but is definitely one or the other. So, we're looking for really plausible lies or truths that seem false. Here's an example (from the Museum):

Due to the Coriolis Effect, the spirals in sea shells from the northern hemisphere grow counter-clockwise while shells that grew in the southern hemisphere spiral clockwise.

Sounds plausible enough, but is it true? Do you have any facts that seem false or lies that seem true?

** This can't be a novel idea...anyone seen this kind of thing somewhere before?

Can Information Be Both False And
Confidential At The Same Time?

Can Information Be Both False And
Confidential At The Same Time?
11/14/2003 02:50 PM
H&R Block is the latest big company to freak out over "anonymous postings" on online message boards and are trying to sue that person, who they suspect to be an employee of the firm. Here's where the story gets interesting. They're accusing this person of posting both "false" and "confidential" information. Now, it's certainly possible that the person is posting two pieces of information separately - one false, one confidential, but they don't seem to indicate that. In general, it makes sense to pick one or the other (unless you're Diebold ). By accusing someone of posting confidential information, they're basically admitting that the information is true. So, while it is possible that the information was posted in a misleading way, the fact that they first say the information is "false" and then say it was a violation of company policies for revealing confidential info makes you wonder which one it actually was. If the information is false, then the company should say so and go after the poster on those grounds. If it's confidential, they should use that. However, to say it's both makes you wonder.

But for the Revolution to not support HD is kind of a death sentence. By the time these boxes hit the streets, everyone is going to have at least 720p LCDs in their rooms.
