Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?

Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?
04/21/2004 03:53 PM
Last week we noted a new study saying that people get annoyed with others talking on mobile phones because they only hear one half of the conversation. At the time, I wrote that this made sense as periods of silence followed by talking are a lot more jarring to the passive listener. However, this BBC report claims that the reason for the annoyance is that it shows that we're more curious about what the other party is saying. I'm not sure I buy that. It seems much more likely that it's the variability in noise, from silent to noisy rather than any form of curiosity. When the conversation is at a constant hum (even when loud), it's much easier to tune it out. Still, the findings do go against the opinion many people have expressed that things like "push-to-talk" where the phone usually acts as a speaker phone would be more annoying since we get to hear both sides of the conversation. In fact, the researchers behind the study are even suggesting that mobile phone makers may want to explore adding speaker phones to more phones to make them less annoying. Of course, the study only set up two conditions: a conversation on a mobile phone and a face-to-face conversation. They didn't test the speaker phone situation to see how annoying that was. It's possible that the annoyance factor comes from the inability to make use of body language to express concepts as well, leading to a different tone of voice.

New Technorati API calls, part I

New Technorati API calls, part I 01/07/2004 05:33 PM
I've been working three new Technorati API calls.  The first is called getinfo.  It tells you things that Technorati knows about a user.  In the simplest case you can use  getinfo to find out information that a blogger wants to make known about himself, along with some information that Technorati has calculated and verified about that person.

http://api.te chnorati.com/getinfo?username=dsifry (experts, see expert note below)

This will return an XML structure with information about the user.  Here's an example of the XML returned:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<!-- generator="Technorati API version 0.9 /getinfo" -->
<!DOCTYPE tapi PUBLIC "-//Sifry Consulting//DTD TAPI 0.01//EN" "http://api.technorati.com/dtd/tapi-001.xml">
<tapi version="0.9">
<document>
<result>
<username>dsifry</username>

  <lastupdate></lastupdate>
  <foafurl>http://www.sifry.com/alerts/foaf.rdf</foafurl>
  </weblog>
</item>
</result>
</document>
</tapi>

The document is broken up into two sections: The first part describes some information that the user (dsifry) wants to allow people to know about himself.  This information is available in HTML form at:
http://www.technorati. com/profile/dsifry
In this case, all the personal information that I want you to know about me is my username, and a link to a picture of myself, and the blogs I author.  The second part of the document is a listing of the weblogs that the user has successfully claimed and the information that Technorati knows about these weblogs. This is the default, by the way.  You'll see lots of information in there, like the Name and URL of each blog, its RSS feed (if it exists), number of bloggers who are currently linking to it, when it was last updated, and some other optional data, like a link to a FOAF file, or GeoURL.

More to come, including information on the validate API call, which is built to make it easy to validate blog and comment postings...

(Expert note: This is a RESTful call, as with all the Technorati API calls, you can use GET or POST to the http://api.te chnorati.com/getinfo URI)

    Vonage, SBC Fight Over 911 Calls

    Vonage, SBC Fight Over 911 Calls 03/30/2005 11:08 PM
    Vonage is in a bit of hot water over its E911 efforts lately -- though, it seems to mostly be a political ploy. However, now comes the news that Vonage approached SBC last month about running a private trial of an E911 service that would require SBC to give Vonage access to some routers and databases. SBC refused, pointing out that if they work privately with Vonage, there are a hundred other VoIP providers who will want to work privately with them also. They would prefer to come up with standards across the board that everyone can use -- which makes a lot more sense. While Vonage's request was a bit silly, it does show they know how important the VoIP-911 issue is becoming. Update: Of course, some are claiming this means VoIP E911 service will be held up -- which is ridiculous. This is only about delaying E911 for Vonage's proprietary method of doing E911. In this case, SBC is right. There should be a standard way, across the board for VoIP providers to do E911 and connect with the telcos.

    Not once in this LA Times story (reg req) about Native American casinos' gambling revenues -- and whether the casinos should pay more to the state -- do you find the word "gaming," I'm happy to note. The gambling industry has tried to sanitize what it does by renaming the activity into something that sounds totally benign. And the media usually plays along. Not this time. A tip of the hat to whoever made that decision.

    US Senator calls for P2P Summit

    US Senator calls for P2P Summit 01/19/2004 01:55 PM
    BoingBoing pal John Parres says:
    Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN) is back in the news. Last fall the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which he chairs, scrutinized the RIAA's crackdown on file-sharers. Last week during a Consumer Electronics Show panel he said, "With the advent of technology such as peer-to-peer networking, law, technology and ethics are now not in synch. We need to find other ways to solve the problems rather than issuing lawsuits and lobbying Congress to pass tougher laws." Now, lo and behold, he is planning to convene a peer-to-peer (P2P) summit within the next two months. (Story link)

    The Senator says, "I believe we need the technology experts, the computer industry, the peer-to-peer industry, the software industry, the entertainment industry, the privacy experts and the business experts to come together and discuss positive and meaningful solutions to this challenge facing a major segment of our economy." A voice of reason in the Senate? I for one am hopeful.

    More Calls For Patent Reform

    More Calls For Patent Reform 04/28/2004 01:12 PM
    Yet another study has come out pointing out all of the well known problems with the patent system and suggesting it's about time something was done to fix it. They suggest that there need to be more patent examiners, there needs to be a better process for contesting patents, and examiners need to reject more "obvious" patents. Of course, as another article about the patent system makes clear, the government sees the patent office more as a revenue generator rather than as a force for innovation. As such, they're not that interested in either spending more on it or making it harder to receive patents. As far as they're concerned, the more patents granted means more people will apply, and more funds will go into the patent office coffers - which can then be raided to pay off other government bills.
