After research showed (surprise surprise) that "many people are very disillusioned and cynical about politicians and local civic institutions" moves were made to set up iCan, to enable people to get information on and engage in local and national political issues. With search tools to find actions on local issues, message boards, and the ability to create a website for your cause, "iCan aims to make politics accessible to ordinary people confronting a problem." It's also one of the things Rupert Murdoch and The Guardian would like to squash.

Toilet Paper Scalability

Toilet Paper Scalability 03/14/2005 06:06 PM

Here's a fun example of why scalability is hard: What problems do you run into by going parallel on your toilet paper dispenser?

Although most homes have only single roll holders, most commercial establishments have long ago switched to devices that hold multiple rolls. We decided to install one, so we purchased holder of two rolls, side by side.

We discovered that although we now had two rolls instead of one, the problem was not solved. Both rolls ran out at the same time. Sure, it took twice as long before the rolls emptied, but we were still stuck with the same problem: no more paper. We had discovered that the switch to two rolls meant we had to use more sophisticated behavior: the algorithm for tearing of paper mattered.

A fun article with a good look into how computer nerds look at the world, but it also hints at actual issues with scalability: More does not automatically equal better.

toto_toilet.jpg imageToto's new "Intelligence Toilet" system brings health measurements only a bathroom away. For mere thousands of dollars, the Intelligence Toilet system will measure urine sugar, blood pressure, body fat and weight on a daily basis. Since there is very little human intervention required, it's almost lazy enough for me to use. The data can be transferred over a home network too, for viewing on your PC. Sony Online Entertainment has announced the next version of Everquest will interface with this as well, so creating an in-game likeness of yourself is as easy as going to the bathroom.

New York Times on the toilet

New York Times on the toilet 04/19/2005 11:04 AM
David Pescovitz: Today's New York Times has an article about the toilet market with a few interesting bits about American Standard's design center:
In one room, 12 toilets are flushing as if under ghostly control; an electronic machine is pulling the virtual levers - and manipulating water temperature and pressure as well. In smaller rooms nearby, one man is alternately flushing cylinders of miso paste, wadded-up paper, and as many as 24 golf balls at a time, while another is inspecting different glazes on ceramic tiles.

Men and machines are testing and retesting the Champion, a low-to-medium priced but technically advanced toilet. American Standard, the world's largest maker of bathroom and kitchen products, has promised consumers that the Champion will never clog.

Toto's Techno Toilet Tomorrow

Toto's Techno Toilet Tomorrow 05/31/2004 09:49 AM

washlet_c100.jpg imageApparently toilet technologists Toto have felt the rains down in Africa one too many times, developing a new backdoor spritzer known as the 'Washlet' that tries to give a modern-day spin to the bidet. While Science Toilets are nothing new -- the Japanese have led this field for decades, for better or worse (see: Tubgirl) -- Toto is pushing the Washlet with all they've got, with videos, infomercials, and even a multi-story Times Square ad. Will Americans finally warm up to a warm water pulse on their sour apples? I could assume, but opinions are like assholes: they often feel cleanest when hit with a jet of heated steam.

Meanwhile, back in Japan, Toto has added a 'hydroelectric' convertor that uses the wasted flush energy to power the infrared sensor, keeping the internal battery charged for up to 10 years. It even tries to guess what number you've worked out and adjusts the amount of water as appropriate. (Thanks, Robert!)

Toto's Daily Check-up Toilet

Toto's Daily Check-up Toilet 03/29/2005 08:52 AM

toto_super.jpgIf I had to pick a toilet company, clearly Toto would be my favorite. They've moved well beyond the orifice squirting and heating air drying of standard Japanese space toilets to add glucose level, blood pressure, fat percentage, and weight testing, all from your urine.

Okay, not exactly, but the whole Toto system, which is currently set to be sold by the Yamato house building corporation in Japan, does transform a lowly bathroom into a full-fledged sick bay.

Faking Out Social Network Systems

Faking Out Social Network Systems 01/02/2004 06:19 PM
It's no secret that I'm not a huge fan of many of these social networking services. I have nothing against them, I just don't see how they'll ever make much money - because they're mostly based on two ideas that have trouble standing up to scrutiny: (a) people with rich social networks have no problem subsidizing those with weak networks and (b) you can easily define relationships in a binary way. However, I hadn't even considered other issues with social networks, such as the ability to use them for questionable purposes. For example, this article, which focuses on the security weaknesses of some of these sites briefly mentions a very sneaky use of such a system: virtual identity theft. For example, you create a profile at LinkedIn, pretending to work at a competitor. Then, you sit back and intercept any messages that are intended to go that competitor and use them for your own business instead. Of course, in this case it depends on others in your network not noting that you're lying, but the number of people I've heard of using Linked in who have made connections with people they barely know makes this completely plausible.

Kidnapping Entrepreneurs in Iraq

Kidnapping Entrepreneurs in Iraq 03/28/2005 08:09 AM
NYT.  The kidnapping business in Iraq.  Scattered anecdotal evidence suggests that the epidemic of kidnapping, especially of children, is a force like no other in driving from Iraq the educated professionals who are critically needed for the rebuilding of the country. As stoic as Iraqis often are about the perils they face in their daily lives, kidnapping contributes to the national sense of instability and fuels mutual distrust - particularly because many kidnappings rely on people close to the target who pass information on net worth, daily habits and other matters of interest to hostage takers.

Technology makes it easier:

A profusion of mobile phones and SIM cards - memory chips for the phones - sold throughout Iraq from small and often unregistered shops made tracing calls from sophisticated kidnappers all but impossible, Colonel Faisel said. And he said that for all their help, American military and intelligence officials in Iraq had been slow to share surveillance technology that could aid the Iraqis in nailing the callers.

A highly decentralized business:

At least three different groups of kidnapping entrepreneurs became involved in his case, he said, the one that kidnapped him, another that guarded the container, and a third that tortured him periodically with steel-bristled brushes. The third group bargained with the first group to "purchase" him.
