The Halliburton Stench

The Halliburton Stench 08/05/2004 07:20 AM
Vice President Dick Cheney's tenure at Halliburton, the company he ran before returning to partisan politics in 2000, gets more and more questionable as facts come out. Consider what's happened in the past two days. While CEO, Cheney was grossly negligent -- at best -- in the company's handling of an accounting change that helped the company show better profits without changing the underlying business at all. The accounting move was legal, but it wasn't disclosed to shareholders, who had an absolute right to know. The Securities and Exchange Commission, in a legal wrist slap given the money involved, fined Halliburton $7.5 million (NYT). But it didn't hold the company's chief executive accountable in any way. So either Cheney was willfully ignorant of an accounting shift that added tens of millions to the bottom line, or he was one of the people culpable for the move. We don't know, because the SEC's statement on the matter was muddled. But the most favorable way to view Cheney's actions here is to assume that he utterly failed to do his job. Meanwhile, investigations are growing more intense into alleged bribery (Bloomberg) in Nigeria by Halliburton, also under Cheney's tenure as CEO. There are also ongoing investigations into the company's dealings with Iran. And, of course, there's the continuing Halliburton saga in its Iraq operations today, a scandal of fairly major proportions. A full-service company indeed. Ask yourself what the hard-right partisans would be doing if we'd been talking about a Democratic vice president whose former company was up to its eyeballs in such shenanigans. They'd be screaming their outrage from the rooftops. But on this, they are silent.

Vegas Officials Launch Assault on Stench

AP - Something is raising a stink in Las Vegas. City officials, fearful that the smells emanating from downtown alleys are hampering the area's economic resurgence, have launched an assault on stench.

$100,000 effort to identify foul stench
in Las Vegas
07/31/2004 08:29 PM
For the last ten years, a mysterious nasty smell has been coming out of storm drains on Fremont Street in Las Vegas. Officials there want to spend $100k to track down the source of the vile odor.
The stink emanating from the storm sewers has plagued the area around the Fremont Street pedestrian mall for a decade, and every time the city has thrown time, effort and deodorizer at the problem, the "sewer-type" aroma has just returned.

On Wednesday, City Council is to consider a $100,000 US consulting contract aimed at finding the source of the olfactory offence.

A tiny closed-circuit television system would be used to examine the downtown storm drains, smoke would be pumped into the system to identify outlets and dye would be used to follow water flows.

Seems telemarketers have largely ignored the do not call list. With nearly 65 million people who have signed up for do not call 429,000 have received at least 1 call and that's just the people that reported it. Seems the FCC could cash in if they would go out and collect the fines but some wonder if they have the teeth.

One advantage of living in Hawaii is most telemarketers don't bother but those that do usually call about 4am and when you get done screaming at them asking them if they know what time it is you never get a call back. [CNN Money]

The Latest Techie Complaints

The Latest Techie Complaints 04/15/2004 01:02 PM
So what does a techie have to complain about these days? It what must have been a fairly cathartic column, one tech columnist just tossed a few of his tech complaints into a single column that doesn't even bother trying to tie them all together. The three big complaints: (1) every time he finds a product he likes, it gets bought by another larger company (and, he implies, the larger company then kills what he liked about the product) (2) it's increasingly difficult to actually find stuff you want on a search engine and (3) plug and play often plugs, but doesn't play. The best part, though, is his description of the inevitable phone call after the new device doesn't work: "Is your computer turned on? Are you connected using a USB or firewire cable? Do you have more than a fifth-grade education?" Something about tax day seems to bring out people's complaining nature.

Don't call him chicken

Don't call him chicken 07/10/2004 02:43 PM
Sunjit Kumar of Suva, Fiji, was raised by chickens. As a young boy, his grandfather locked him in a chicken coop where he lived for several years. After Kumar escaped, he was taken to an old age home where the baffled staff confined him for twenty years. Now though, Elizabeth Clayton, president of a Rotary Club in Fiji's capital city, has, er, taken Kumar under her wing.
"Sujit would mostly hop around like a chicken, peck at his food, perch like a chicken and make noises like a chicken," she said. "He would prefer to roost on the floor to go to sleep rather than sleep in a bed."
Kumar currently resides in a former factory while undergoing therapy. Video available here. More of the story here.

O'Neil the Chicken

O'Neil the Chicken 01/16/2004 01:02 PM

Too bad O'Neil is backtracking on his accounts of the Bush administration.  His words matched my expectation of Bush perfectly.  When Bush got elected, I expected him to look for excuses to attack Iraq.  And I would have been surprised if he paid attention to anything other than the Bible and the picture of Saddam Hussein after he got to the White House.  Baloonfoot indeed.

I think O'Neil spoke the truth and now he is acting like a chicken.  The sad thing is that I am not surprised.  Only thing missing is Osama bin Laden announcing that he attacked America because he learned of a secret plot by Bush to invade and occupy Iraq.  Sheesh.  I'll bet Arnold the Terminator would make a much better President than Bush.

BTW, check out the 30 second ads at Bush in 30 Seconds site even if you are pro-Bush.  Ads oversimplify as usual but they are hillarious and very well done.  I am impressed.

Dixie Chicks Pulled from Air After Bashing Bush Dude, these Texas people didn't find criticism of the president unpatriotic when Bill Clinton was president. They thought it was a sacred duty...Apparently country stations in Texas and elsewhere are pulling Dixie Chicks albums because their lead singer, while on an overseas tour, criticized Bush, saying she was ashamed to be from the state as him. People who want to criticize the critics of the critical comments are supporting the Chicks by buying their albums and requesting their songs. I never thought I'd buy a Dixie Chicks album, but that's what I'm going to do tonight, and I'm paying full price!

Ms. Jardin, Though you might be intereested in this tidbit. I got a phone call from International Communications Research (ICR) for a survey yesterday. Buried among the questions about credit counseling services, political affiliation, and consumption of coffee, tobacco, and fast food products, I got this series of questions.

"Do you have an Internet connection? Have you ever visited the website subservientchicken.com? Would you visit it again?"

These were followed up by questions about the BK Tendercrisp Sandwich and their low-carb menu. Looks like they're looking to evaluate the potency of their stealth marketing campaign.

FCC Swamped By Number Portability
Complaints
01/29/2004 03:49 AM
By this point, it's pretty well known that wireless number portability didn't go so smoothly over the past couple of months. However, now the FCC has admitted the extent of the problems, saying that they've recei ved 4,750 complaints concerning number portability. Considering the total number of switchers, that's really not a huge percentage - but it still doesn't speak well to the efforts the wireless carriers put into the process. The FCC is now looking to see if any regulations were broken. Considering that many carriers were clearly dragging their feet on getting ready for this (partly as a ploy to ask for more delays), it seems likely that the FCC will fine a few carriers for screwing around when they should have been preparing (as we expected back in May). It still seems like a strategically backwards move not to have embraced something that customers clearly wanted - and which was clearly going to come sooner or later.
