If There's a Wireless Signal in the
Woods but No One Around to Use It, Can
It Still Be Stolen?

So Weirdly Wrong

"A few minutes ago, a police officer passed the bench where I was sitting outside the Athenaeum, enjoying the mild temperature and the wifi signal, and he said, 'Sir, you can’t use the Internet outside the library.'

I said, 'What?' (I’m pretty clever under pressure.)

The officer in question (whose conduct was entirely professional, firm, and calm behind those mirrored shades) solemnly assured me that in order to use the library’s open wireless signal, I had to be seated within the library....

'Maybe if you had permission it would be all right, but it’s a new law, sir; ‘theft of signal.’ It would be like if you stole someone’s cable TV connection....'

'...Is this a state law?' I asked.

'It’s a federal law, sir; a Secret Service agent came and explained it to us....'

At this point, it became clear that my uniformed interlocutor had to head in a different direction from me, so we shook hands and parted. And I walked back to the studio, dumbfounded that someone just rousted me for picking an open wireless signal in public — indeed (as it turns out) for using a laptop within a wireless signal’s range of the library. Weird." [AKMA’s Random Thoughts]

This truly is unbelievable, and it makes you wonder why on earth the Secret Service is going around lecturing local law enforcement about wireless "signal theft."

AKMA, please, please, please, go back to the library and talk to the librarians there. I wonder if they even know about this, but I am 100% sure they would love to help verify the law at every level (local, state, and federal). Perhaps they need to start handing out cards that declare their wireless signal open so that there can be no claim of theft.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) has announced a new type of underwater robot they're calling the Hybrid Remotely Overated Vehicle (HROV). In addition to being operated by remote control via a tether like normal ROVs, the HROV can also operate autonomously like AUV. WHOI intends to use the new robot to explore the deepest parts of the ocean, more than 11,000 meters below the surface. The robot is battery-powered and can go for up to 36 hours before returning for a recharge. The timing of the new robot couldn't be better. A recent National Research Council report has a identified a need for more and better underwater vehicles for basic ocean research.

03/29/2005 06:25 AM
One way to peek into technology's crystal ball last month was to take a winding road into a cedar forest in the Pacific Northwest to seek out one of tech's top thinkers. A sunny Thursday afternoon found him waiting alone behind the gate of his secluded cottage. "Hi, thanks for coming," said Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, appearing eager for company after four days alone at the waterfront cottage. He was there for his "Think Week," a seven-day stretch of seclusion he uses to ponder the future of technology and then propagate those thoughts across the Microsoft empire. It's a twice-yearly ritual that can influence the future of Microsoft and the tech industry. A Think Week thought can give the green light to a new technology that millions of people will use, or send Microsoft into new markets.

vwsi730.jpgUh oh. I didn't know this was possible: Verizon has released a phone I want. The Samsung SCH-i730 is a WIndows Mobile device that has not only an EV-DO radio (I love me some EV-DO) but also Wi-Fi, which many thought Verizon would remove for fear they might not squeeze every last testicle dollar from their subscribers. It's $600 and only available to business customers at the moment, but it's lovely.

I've already got Verizon for EV-DO service with the PCMCIA card. I wonder if they'd let me add the phone service on, too? I might just have to see.

Rogue Nantucket WiFi cop embroiders the

Rogue Nantucket WiFi cop embroiders the
truth (some more)
09/07/2004 08:12 PM
Cory Doctorow: Remember when Reverend AKMA got told off for "theft of services" when he used the Nantucket Atheaneum's open WiFi from a bench out front, by a copper who invented a fictituous Federal regulation forbidding same? Well now the Nantucket paper has run a story in which the cop has embroidered the incident to make it all seem so very very very sinister indeed.
After I first read the story, I was amused, and put it aside to blog here. In transcribing the story for this entry, though, I'm struck by the odd inconcinnity of this account with my own experience. The Deputy Chief's story sounds very little like what happened to me.

* The mysterious "tapper" was leaning against the rear of the Atheneum; I was sitting on a public benchbeside the Atheneum.

* The newspaper story says that this incident gave rise to a "rumor" that "the police considered outdoor users. . . to be engaged in a theft of services," but in fact that's exactly what the officer who rousted me told me.

* The story says that this took place "a month ago," but if the article was published last week (when the weekly paper would have had to go to press in order for it to get to my mom, who then clipped it and mailed it to me), the incident couldn't have taken place longer ago than two weeks, give or take a day.

Link (Thanks, AKMA)

Is Verizon Limiting WiFi Access To Only
Registered Computers?

Is Verizon Limiting WiFi Access To Only
Registered Computers?
08/12/2004 01:28 PM
While companies like Speakeasy continue to win customers by telling people they can do whatever they want with the broadband connection into the home, it looks like Verizon may be going in the other direction. An article in the NY Times suggests that Verizon is rolling out a new system that limits WiFi to only "registered" computers. Unfortunately, the article isn't clear at all, and the issue gets confused because the writer, who was blocked, knows she was using a neighbor's WiFi who was actually connected via SBC. The way the article is written, it sounds like she thought Verizon was somehow getting in the way and blocking her SBC borrowing, when it's pretty obvious that she just picked up the signal from someone else's Verizon-connected WiFi. The more interesting question, though, is whether or not Verizon really is requiring users to "register" every computer they want to log on to an account. If they are, it's a ridiculous and backwards thinking policy. While there's nothing wrong with keeping those you don't want off your WiFi, shouldn't it be up to the person paying for the connection? All Verizon has done is made it much more difficult for its own customers to use WiFi in a useful way. There are plenty of situations where there are perfectly good reasons to open up your WiFi to a "non-registered" computer (someone is visiting and wants to use their computer, you buy another computer, you bring home a work laptop, etc.), and Verizon has just made that much more difficult. Also, why should Verizon need to know how many computers I have accessing the connection? They're just selling the connection. All the more reason to go with a more customer friendly broadband ISP.
