Another Forced Hiatus

Another Forced Hiatus

Another Forced Hiatus 08/27/2004 01:54 PM

Radio is acting up yet again, for what is still apparently no good reason. I have three big deadlines in the next two weeks, so I just don't have time right now to keep messing it with it to get it to post what I'm writing. Even though I have a lot I wanted to post about, it's not worth the loss of my time and the frustration when so much else is going on. I'll try to address this in a couple of weeks, and hopefully Radio will wake up and publish this notification at some point to let all of you know what is happening.

Plea: there's no other software out there that integrates a full-featured news aggregator (that I can access remotely and that lets me delete individual items) with a blogging tool, right? Please tell me such a beast exists and I just haven't found it yet.... Otherwise, please help me, LazyWeb Kenobi. You're my only hope!

This website is taking a break, and there will be no updates until Monday, 28 March 2004.

What am I doing? I'll be back in the army for my reservist duty -- 4 days, 3 nights. After that, I'll just relax and think about the future of this website. (If you have any suggestions, please feel free to e-mail me.)

Mostly on hiatus until November 2,
helping Get Out The Vote
12/17/2004 06:40 PM
I have taken a temporary position as a project manager for a small company that sponsored some innovative open-source software that I worked on a bit as a volunteer. The company contracts with a number of large partisan and non-partisan membership organizations to host (and adapt the software they've built) for the organizations' Get Out The Vote efforts between now and November 2. Talk about a fixed deadline. It's crazed, and it pays considerably less than I made starting as a software project manager 15 years ago, but it is work of the heart, well worth doing. It is too late to do much about the voting machines this election cycle, but at least we can try and get everybody out to vote. I've lived in several countries where governments were not chosen by elections, and I take our right to elect our representatives very seriously, and hope you will to. If you need an emotional demonstration of the reason to vote, click the graphic at the right and watch the powerful short movie. It is our country, and we get to decide who its leaders are. I don't care if you agree with my political opinions or if you think that George Bush is the greatest thing since sliced bologna. Please exercise your right and duty to educate yourself on the issues and candidates and to vote on November 2. As you might guess, I'll be working a bit more than 40 hours a week between now and November 2, averaging about 16 hours a day so far this week, so I suspect I won't be doing much writing here, or reading blogs elsewhere, although I may post the odd comment here or there. I hope to see you at the polls on November 2....

Forced compassion

Forced compassion 01/01/2005 12:52 PM
From Reuters: CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush, under pressure over the pace and scale of American aid to Asian tsunami victims, abruptly raised the U.S. contribution to $350 million on Friday, 10 times the amount pledged just two days ago. Good. That's up a lot from the ludicrous $4M we offered five days ago, the boost to a shameful $15M, and the upping of that to the merely disgraceful $35M. It's still not nearly enough from a country that claims to be the world's economic, military and moral leader; before the election, Congress allotted $13.6 billion to rebuild states...

Article in Guardian about why the US
should be forced out of Iraq

Article in Guardian about why the US
should be forced out of Iraq
05/02/2004 11:21 AM

An interesting article in The Guardian about what we should do in Iraq. She argues that the UN should not support the US in Iraq and should join the mutiny against the US and force the US out of Iraq.

Naomi Klein, Saturday May 1, 2004, The Guardian
M utiny is the only way out of Iraq's inferno

The UN betrayed Iraq by becoming the political arm of US occupation. Now it must redeem itself

Can we please stop calling it a quagmire? The United States isn't mired in a bog in Iraq, or a marsh; it is free-falling off a cliff. The only question now is: who will follow the Bush clan off this precipice, and who will refuse to jump?

More and more are, thankfully, choosing the second option. The last month of US aggression in Iraq has inspired what can only be described as a mutiny: waves of soldiers, workers and politicians under the command of the US occupation authority suddenly refusing to follow orders and abandoning their posts. First Spain announced that it would withdraw its troops, then Honduras, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Kazakhstan. South Korean and Bulgarian troops were pulled back to their bases, while New Zealand is withdrawing its engineers. El Salvador, Norway, the Netherlands and Thailand will likely be next.

[...]

There is a way that the UN can redeem itself in Iraq: it could choose to join the mutiny, further isolating the United States. This would help to force Washington to hand over real power - ultimately to Iraqis, but first to a multilateral coalition that did not participate in the invasion and occupation and would have the credibility to oversee direct elections. This could work, but only through a process that fiercely protects Iraq's sovereignty.

Can AOL Be Forced To Put Safe Sex
Notices In Chat Rooms?

Can AOL Be Forced To Put Safe Sex
Notices In Chat Rooms?
01/22/2004 08:57 AM
An interesting battle is brewing between some health officials and AOL. The health officials are worried that people using chat rooms to set up real-life sexual encounters aren't doing anything to protect themselves during sex, and its leading to an increase in sexually transmitted diseases. Thus, they're trying to sue AOL to force them to put up safe-sex messages on those chat rooms. From a general community standpoint, that seems to make sense, but AOL has pretty good reasons for not doing it. As they point out, they're just setting up an open chat room system that anyone can use to chat about anything. They don't have the capability to determine which chat rooms are being used for these purposes, and they point out that users may get upset if they feel they're being spied on in some way. At the same time, there's simply no legal basis under which AOL should be compelled to post such a warning. Of course, taking a step back from all that, would anyone actually pay attention to such a warning?

Sony forced to rethink Librié
concept
12/19/2004 03:34 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Andreas Bovens sez: On July 2, 2004, Boing Boing reported about the Sony Librie e-book reader, which sports an awesome e-ink display, but is full of restrictive DRM bloat. In a desperate (?) attempt to boost sales of the Librié, Sony recently started offering downloads for converting your own documents to the Librié's BBeB format, meaning that you now can read Project Gutenberg or Aozora Bunko books on your Librie! (As far as I know, reports so far are only in Japanese, hence a link to my own blog entry about it.)"

Now all it needs is a backlight and the capability to sync with a Mac, and I'll buy one no matter how much it costs. Link

Should Apple be forced to open up iPod
and iTunes?
08/06/2004 06:39 PM
Real and France's Virgin claim that they deserve to be able to sell their music on Apple's iPod. To prove they're serious, Virgin Mega has filed a complaint against Apple to do so. Perhaps I'm missing something here, but last I checked it wasn't anybody's responsibility to open up their product or service to purposely allow the competition in. That is, of course, unless the government steps in. Are Real and Virgin Mega just being whiny little brats, angered that they're not invited to the party? What are legitimate reasons for the legal system to get involved and to rule in favor of such plaintiffs? While the obvious Microsoft may come to mind, are there other examples you can think of? As for me, I'd like to hand out copies of "Atlas Shrugged" and "The Fountainhead" to both Real and Virgin Mega...

I have been mulling this over for a few days and am saddened that another company has been destroyed by the Mafia like organizations that went after them in the courts for giving consumers the tools to allow fair use of media that they own.

I have to give the men and women that worked at 321 Studios a Bronze Star for taking a bullet and fighting to the very last. I only wished that they had survived the legal battle. [www.321studios.com]
