Being Pitched by Technology Companies

Being Pitched by Technology Companies

Being Pitched by Technology Companies 08/27/2004 01:52 PM

I get in my inbox on a daily basis a dozen or so pitches from companies looking to have their product pitched. My response always is send me the item and let me keep it and I will write up a review. The software guys are happy to do this, but not the hardware people. I guess we don't have a big enough readership to warrant being given hardware to test.

I am not surprised others are getting the same pitches. I would be interested in seeing if anyone is scoring any cool hardware. After all if I am going to pitch a product you can be sure I have used it and will be giving you all the plus and minuses of the product in question. [Loosewire]

OK here is some good news from the digital divide that puts some of the tech industries biggest players on the side of consumers in supporting the Digital Media Consumers' Rights Act which is also referred to HR 107 which I have been advocating that you support. I am continuing to encourage you to write to your Congressional Representative to help get this bill approved. HR 107 will change wording in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that will assure consumers fair use of digital media.

Of course the MPAA, RIAA and other organizations want those provisions of the DMCA that HR 107 changes left as they are so that encryption and lockout tools can be incorporated into digital recording devices.

It is nice to see public companies working behind the political scenes in Washington DC forming a coalitions that supports the consumer. [Cn et]

04/04/2005 02:33 AM
Research findings released today by specialist datacentre services company, IXEurope, have revealed that there is still widespread inertia from UK tech firms in putting in place plans that deal with technical or physical threats such as viruses and DDoS attacks. The in-depth research, which polled nearly 100 businesses across the UK, found that as many as 24% of companies have no intention of implementing a DR plan. [PRWEB Apr 4, 2005]

Cory pitched to Microsoft that DRM is bad for their business. I'm surprised he didn't use the recent example of HD-DVD. Apparently the DVD Forum was considering the Jon Johansen Problem and came up with a simple solution: computers will never ever be able to play HD-DVD movies under any circumstances. After all, this solution worked for SACD. (This doesn't address the Bunnie Huang Problem, but let's leave that for later.) Microsoft immediately protested that this would lock them out of their plan to converge PCs and home theaters. (I have no clue what Steve Jobs is thinking when he calls for strong DRM in HD-DVD; by definition if HD-DVDs are playable in OS X then the DRM is weak. Maybe he's willing to concede that market since he hates TV anyway.)

Every time there is a downturn in the economy, one of the first things to be reduced or eliminated is training. The reason behind this rational from most CEO’s perspectives is that training is both expensive and ineffective. The question that needs to be addressed if this is the case is: “Why bother to train at all?”As companies continue to emerge out of the recent recession, there is a closer examination of the role of training and its underlying costs. Rather than fall back upon traditional seminar-training models, CEO’s realize there are cheaper and more effective methods available. This is a wake-up call for many training managers, who are no longer able to rely on conventional training tools if they wish to keep their jobs. [PRWEB Aug 18, 2004]

TO RAPID BUSINESS GROWTH: How Emerging

the Costs and Risks of Expansion
06/23/2004 03:08 AM
It’s a myth that the information technology (IT) requirements of emerging and midsize businesses are simpler than those of large enterprises. Virtually every day, we interact with the technology and business leaders of midsize companies whose IT demands not only rival the requirements of much larger companies, but in many cases exceed them.Fortunately, emerging and midsize businesses can resolve the dilemma of updating their outmoded IT infrastructure without massive one-time investments in technology. New technologies, such as Microsoft® .NET, enable companies to leverage previous investments in technology while step-by-step integrating their business systems to enable an efficient, cost-effective, and flexible solution to driving and managing growth. Conspiracy theory of the day: Dell

Conspiracy theory of the day: Dell
Laptop with built-in keylogger color="red">(Update: HOAX)
06/17/2005 03:34 PM
Mark Frauenfelder:

Reader comment: Marc Hedlund presents the best argument for this thing being a hoax: "A search for the name of the FOIA officer in the letter turns up this letter, which uses the same logo and the same address as the one in the 'keylogger' story. Note also that the 'file number' is the *same* on the two letters. It looks to me like the keylogger poster just overlaid new text in the body of the letter." Link

I'm not sure what to make of this, really. This website has a report by an anonymous person who says he bought a new Dell laptop and discovered what he claims is a "keyboard logger" -- a chip that stores keystrokes. He says he called Dell's tech support and asked them about it:

"they said, and I quote, 'The intregrated service tag identifier is there for assisting customers in the event of lost or misplaced personal information.' He then hung up."
He then call the police, who told him to call the Department of Homeland Security:
"they told me to submit a Freedom of Information Act request. This is what I got:" (Click on thumbnails for enlargement)
 Wtf Lol Files Homelandletter
Is this a hoax? The page seems to be the only accessible page on the site (www.chromance.de), which has a German top level domain. Link (Thanks, Rev!)

Update: Phil Torrone says: "I did an investi-MAKE-ion. I think the keylogger thing is a hoax. the images from the site are from here. The memo/letter thing of course looks fakey too.

"I think this is far scarier." (This points to an article that says the U.S. Department of Justice is looking into making ISPs store "records of e-mail, browsing or chat-room activity months after ISPs ordinarily would have deleted the logs -- if they were ever kept in the first place.")

Reader comment: Tian says: "The letter accompanied with the story about Dell laptop's keylogger is fake as well. If you do a search for dept. of homeland security's logo, it is a blue colour circular logo with an eagle in it. The one on the fake letter is a five-pointed star, which is commonly used for Sheriff's office." Link

Australian Air-Powered Engine

Australian Air-Powered Engine 08/30/2004 06:26 AM

automobile_19_air-compression_C.jpg imageAn Australian man has invented a vehicle powered by compressed air, although it's not the world's first, despite his claims (I've seen other prototypes before). However, the best part of Angelo Di Pietro's design is that it tosses almost all of the moving parts traditionally associated with engines, instead leaving traditional pistons-in-cylinder designs for a rotary (don't know about its Wankelness, but there you go).

The test vehicle has reached 31MPH, too, so we're not talking a little joke vehicle, although they didn't mention how long a tank would power the little cart. I did notice that Di Pietro's company, EngineAir, also designs roots blowers. Perhaps we'll soon see the world's first forced induction compressed air engine? (Thanks, Christopher!)

AJOL is the National Library of Australia's database of Australian electronic journals, newspapers, magazines, webzines, newsletters and e-mail fanzines. The database provides details and links to over 2000 titles that include local and overseas works with Australian content, authorship and/or emphasis as well as entries for sites which advertise or promote Australian journals. The National Library also maintains a separate listing of Australian Newspapers Online. This will be added to Academic Resources 2004 Internet MiniGuide. This has been added to Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.
