I would have posted this up
about 5 minutes before now, but I noticed they only had three more in
stock, so I thought I should get there before you punks. Because lord
knows, there's nothing that goes together more sweetly than a
distended Hello Kitty head and a light, battery-powered sucking force.
And for $10, even! If this thing moves itself around by itself -
something that I'm sad to say probably isn't the case - I would buy 24
of them and set them loose around the house. It'd be cheaper than a
Roomba and at least 24 times as cute.
Also, have you noticed people saying kawaii a lot lately,
too? I doubt they are doing the clap and giggle. You gotta do
the clap and giggle.

iRobot's Non-Vacuum Robot
04/07/2005 12:44 PMRoomba is making something that isn't a vacuum, to be introduced
this year:
"It's going to happen this year. You'll see something new from iRobot
that's not a vacuum," said Colin Angle, chief executive and co-founder
of iRobot. "We're pretty excited about it."
The new robot likely will leverage technology from the Roomba for
a task like mopping floors or cleaning bathrooms, says Neena Buck, an
analyst with Strategy Analytics.

more specific than this? (

Samsung's VC-RP30W Robotic Vacuum
Samsung's VC-RP30W Robotic Vacuum
12/02/2003 12:23 AMSeveral News agencies such as MobileMag have declared:
Samsung Unveils High-tech Robot Vacuum Cleaner Samsung's
robotic vacuum cleaner, identified as
VC-RP30W, vacuums your house the smart way: it makes a
3D
map and knows
which areas of your house needs cleaning. This is contrary to a
recent article that
says mapping less is better. This is also contrary to popular
robotic vacuums
that just bounce around your house unwittingly with hopes of
eventually vacuuming all the floor. This robot is no dummy. The
battery life
lasts about 50 minutes
a charge and when the battery gets low, it goes back automatically to
the charging station
for a recharge. You can program it to your desired start times to
start when you're away, and
you can even monitor the vacuum from work doing its work with an
internet connection and its
internal camera. With all this robotic intelligence and obvious great
design and crafting, you can guess why there's no mention of price or
availability yet,
but with
camera, internet connection,
charging station, etc, I don't expect it to be as cheap as a Roomba
but at least it's got to be some kind of world's first great
vacuum cleaning robot for
Samsung!

I don't know when they hit
U.S. retail channels, exactly, but it looks like the Dyson DC11
'Telescope' vacuum is now available in the U.S. Amazon has it for
$500. The idea behind Dyson vacuums is that a bagless 'cyclone'
section continually provides suction separate from the filter and
collection so that collected dust and dirt doesn't clog up the
airflow. Guess it is the DC11 I've been seeing on bus stops and not
the DC08. Also, I have no idea if they're any good -- I just like them
because they're yellow.

compared to the more expensive model, although he does have a tendency
to leak some dust out of his waste pan when picked up. Score one for

Bots-Only Poker Tournament
Bots-Only Poker Tournament
06/17/2005 03:45 PMIf our las
t post on bots in online poker is any indication, a lot of you
might be interested in this LA Times
Article:
The march of the machines will be celebrated in Las Vegas next
month with the world's first money tournament for robots — and the
$100,000 prize is drawing a handful of coders out of anonymity.
The emerging technology does more than raise the stakes for real
people and online casinos. It also raises fundamental questions about
how far computers have come in mimicking and improving on human
behavior, and about how far they can go in the future.
The article goes on to quote some AI folks stating that getting a
computer to master poker will probably drive AI forward far more than
a computer winning chess or backgammon, since it's such a
psychological game, and involves understanding human patterns.
Sadly, this poker tournament will not include my favorite parts of
a local Texas Hold'em tournament. Namely, eating too many chips and
laughing so hard that I nearly fall out of my chair.

Hackers Use People as Bots
Hackers Use People as Bots
01/29/2004 02:49 AM
Cory Doctorow describes
how some creative hackers are using people as bots to workaround
'captchas', images
of distorted text, which is used to protect against bots by
websites such as Hotmail
and Register.com.
The ingenious crack is to offer a free porn site which requires
that you key in the
solution to a captcha -- which has been inlined from Yahoo or
Hotmail -- before you
can gain access. Free porn sites attract lots of users around the
clock, and the spammers
were able to generate captcha solutions fast enough to create as
many throw-away email
accounts as they wanted.
The darkside aside, I am impressed by their ingenuity. But
then I guess it is
easy to think outside the box if you were never inside the box to
begin with.

Smart Carpet for RoboVac Navigation
Smart Carpet for RoboVac Navigation
06/17/2005 07:11 PMVorwerk, a German company, is working on a Smart Carpet
system to help robotic vacuums navigate. The system uses radio
frequency identification (RFID) tags at
approximately one tag every 1.5 inches square attached to the
underside of the carpet. The robotic vacuum would have a grid map of
all the unique RFID tag codes and an RFID reader so it would be able
to read where it is at any given moment. A robotic vacuum should then
be able to intelligently navigate even remembering which areas it has
missed and be able to go back and vacuum those spots.

Ionic Breeze of Death (Well, Not Really)
04/13/2005 08:57 AM
The
Washington Post is running a story about the Sharper Image's 'Ionic
Breeze' air fresheners, passing on information from Consumer
Reports that details a dangerously high level of incidental ozone
generation when using the device. It's not just the Ionic Breeze that
has the problem (some other similar 'ionizers' also dump excess ozone)
but with over 1 million (proudly!) sold, The Sharper Image seems to be
bearing the brunt of the criticism. Perhaps that's because of the
libel suit they filed against Consumer Reports in 2003 over
similar findings, which was tossed out by a federal judge.
Anyway, if you've got an ionizing air cleaner, the article is a
must-read. Excess ozone isn't healthy at all.
