Experts: Wireless Network Risk Overhyped 11/11/2003 01:13 AM

In reality, computer security experts say that the security risks of wireless networks are no greater than those of regular networks -- provided that the wireless networks are properly configured, their users are authenticated and the data they carry is encrypted. Tacoma Civic Network Decides Hotspots a
Security Risk

Tacoma Civic Network Decides Hotspots a
Security Risk
01/04/2004 02:23 PM
Tacoma, Washington, has a tremendously ahead-of-its-time fiber optic link run as a utility by the city, but a hotspot experiment has ended due to concerns over security: The network tested out a hotspot at one location, but decided that for security reasons--and also, but less importantly, lack of projectable revenue--that they'd pull the plug. As 802.1X and VPNs rise in availability and importance, it may be that security decisions can be wiped away. If you had a preponderance of Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.3 users, who have built-in VPN clients for both IPsec and PPTP as well as secured 802.1X/EAP, then perhaps you could build a business on the notion that you were offering 100-percent locally encrypted connections. I've wondered why hotspots don't partner with a VPN ASP and simply provide a free account to monthly users or a $1 add-on to pay-as-you-go users to give them permanent (monthly) or disposable (pay-as-you-go) VPN accounts? (Boingo is the only service to offer VPN as just a part of their client.)...

Overblown, overrated, overhyped

Overblown, overrated, overhyped 04/26/2004 01:01 PM
Too many open source advocates complain about Microsoft writing terrible buggy software and think that open source developers do it better. The truth is Microsoft is innovative, has vision, and executes well. If open source developers can do as well as Microsoft, it's a big compliment. Smart people like Miguel de Icaza and Brendan Eich have known this for a long time. Miguel has a reality check for these innocent virgins, giving his assessment of the potential of XAML and Avalon.

Brendan (one of the Mozilla leads) has a frank assessment of Mozilla too. Not too positive. I talked about this last year.

However i think that Miguel and Brendan are just hyping things up. XAML and Avalon may be great technology but no one is waiting for Longhorn to implement web based apps - everyone is implementing them NOW!

Social Tech: Were Webl0gs and RSS
overhyped in Iowa?
01/22/2004 06:47 AM
Michael Gartenberg, quoting Scoble, concurs that weblogs didn't play a big role in influencing the electorate in Iowa.  That is true -- not enough people read weblogs (only 4% according to Michael) to have it matter in a general election.  However, I am fairly sure that it wasn't supposed to be a mass communications vehicle at all.

Political parties, from the communist party in the old Soviet Union to the US's Republican and Democratic parties are composed of only ~4% of the voting population.  Republicans and Democrats have about 2 m people each (2% each of the ~105 m people that vote.  Those are the people that make it happen.  This is much different than registered Republicans and Democrats.  These are party activists.  The rest of us are only here to be influenced.

This is why Trippi and others want to get 2 m people to contribute (its the 2% that makes a party).  By contributing, they are effectively signing a pledge to vote and work for the Dean campaign. The idea that it would be possible to get a significant portion of that funding number via online sources was and is radical.  Even more radical was the idea that this online group could be formed into a more cohesive and operationally active "party" that would drive Dean to victory.

However, these radical ideas haven't played out as scripted due to the critique I posted below.Social technology is great at building insurgencies and not grabbing mainstream political power.

Last week someone at Gartner woke up and realized that the iPod, which has been around for years is actually (oh no!) a hard drive, and came out with a scary report about how they should be completely banned from the workplace, because (just like the telephone, the internet and a photocopying machine before it) it can be misused. Well, someone over in the UK military apparently believed all the hype and has decided to ban the iPod. Thank goodness, the world is now safe from military staff listening to MP3s.

Top Tip: Is a wireless network slower? 03/06/2004 02:03 AM
I'm finally getting DSL :D and I'm curious as to whether I should hook up a wireless network for it instead of a conventional wired network? My dad has a new laptop with wireless capabilities and so he wants to work with that, but my concern is that it will slow down the speed of the DSL. Is wireless any slower than a wired network, and if it is, is it enough to make a difference to internet performance?

Using EU funds, TeliaSonera will help build a broadband wireless network in a region of Sweden that is without broadband access: The network will be built with so-called "pre-WiMax" equipment, or gear that hasn't been certified WiMax but may receive certification once that process begins. This is precisely the type of network that many experts say WiMax is ideal for--covering remote areas that aren't served by wired broadband. Ultimately, such networks could be built in developing nations but initially the networks and products may not be inexpensive enough to serve such markets....

The Berger Affair

The Berger Affair 07/21/2004 11:16 AM

  • NY Times: A Kerry Adviser Leaves the Race Over Missing Documents. Samuel R. Berger, the former national security adviser to President Bill Clinton, resigned abruptly Tuesday as a senior adviser to John Kerry's presidential campaign after the disclosure that he had improperly removed classified material on terrorism from a secure government reading room last year. The decision came after Mr. Berger endured a day of furious criticism from Republican leaders, who accused him of breaching national security and possibly passing classified material to Mr. Kerry's campaign. Democrats, in turn, accused the Bush administration of leaking word of an F.B.I. investigation of Mr. Berger as a way of diverting attention from the release of the Sept. 11 commission's final report Thursday.
  • Plainly, Berger screwed up in a serious way here. The acts he has acknowledged are improper at the very least, and perhaps much worse than that. Maybe we'll know one of these days when the investigation concludes. Almost equally plainly, someone in the Bush administration or campaign illegally leaked word of the investigation just in time to start a political potboiler. The timing cannot be coincidental. The 9/11 commission's report, harshly critical of both the Clinton and Bush administrations' anti-terrorism policies, is being issued this week. And next week comes the Democratic convention in Boston. The Republicans are predictably claiming (among other things) a coverup, even though the 9/11 commission staff has been widely quoted as saying the commission had the documents in question. USA Today reports, for example: "There is no indication that Berger's action affected the 9/11 commission's work; a spokesman for the panel said Tuesday that the classified papers — some of which are still missing — were copies of original documents." The most puzzling aspect of this, as Josh Marshall correctly notes, is Berger's political tone-deafness. Marshall asks: "Why didn't Sandy Berger step aside from his advisory position for John Kerry some time ago?" Good question.

Using multiple e-mail addresses could also serve as a warning of cyber-flirting." Sounds like a lot of us have some explaining to do to our spouses, because we all know that they suspect us anyway.
