Work-Life Balance Tilting Too Much
Towards Work
11/14/2003 02:51 PM
One of the downsides to the fact that people can work whenever they want is that it's sometimes hard for people to stop working. According to a study done in Europe, many overly stressed out workers are asking their bosses to cut their hours and salary just to gain back some control over their lives. Meanwhile, many bosses in IT are increasingly worried that their staff is going to burn out. Of course, a lot of that could be solved if companies hired more people, but they still seem hesitant to do so.

20q.net is an online game of 20 questions that apparently starts off with no knowledge base. It learns from the interactions of the players. And it is pretty damn impressive. I'd like to know more about how it works, but I'm having trouble finding any explanations, and mail to the address given on the site is going unanswered. Anyone know of a place that discusses how it works? In particular, how does it come up with the questions? E.g., where does "Does it come in packs?" come from? TIA (no, not Total Information Awareness.)...

They Work For You

They Work For You 06/06/2004 03:53 PM

Today is/was (you never can tell with these wretched time zone differences) NotCon 2004, London's premiere low-cost, informal, one-day technology conference. Friday's MiniNTK promised the unveiling of a new project from the people behind FaxYourMP and PublicWhip and sure enough, here it is: TheyWorkForYou.com.

TheyWorkForYou.com is the finest example of a political hack I've ever seen. It's basically an ultra-user-friendly front-end to the Hansard public record of all speeches and debates in the houses of commons, with each MP getting their own page complete with a summary of their recent performance and member's interests and a list of their recently recorded parliamentary appearances.

The community features are pretty impressive as well: you can add comments to any speech made in any debate, and there's also a user-populated glossary which is automatically linked in to the speech transcripts.

But with all that, the most useful feature is probably the most subtle: you can subscribe to an RSS feed of your MP's appearances, meaning you can keep track of everything they say on your behalf. It's simple, powerful and a perfect example of the political hacker ethic at work.

Come work for EFF! 06/22/2004 06:48 PM
EFF is hiring! EFF is the best employer I've ever had -- including myself, when I was self-employed, and the company I helped found -- and it's hiring a new Membership Coordinator: the person in charge of satisfying current members and increasing membership. If this sounds like you, apply!
The Membership Coordinator reports to the Director of Development and is a key part of EFF's fundraising team. The MC is responsible for managing all contact with EFF's 12,000+ members, helping to develop strategies to grow the membership, processing all donations to EFF, mailing regular "thank-yous"and renewal notices to donors, ensuring an efficient donation system, managing the donation pages of the website, and responding to any issues donors may have. The MC also manages all aspects of EFF's online shop, including order fulfillment. Additional responsibilities include various marketing projects, including oversight of the design and printing of t-shirts, hats, stickers, brochures, and other materials. The MC also attends a number of commercial conferences each year, managing the EFF booth presence and speaking informally with conference attendees.

We can work it out

We can work it out 09/24/2004 05:45 PM

BBC commentator Bill Thompson, riffing on the ongoing dispute between Apple Computer and Apple Corps (the Beatles), has a suggestion:

In the days they set up Apple Corps they were radical hippies who challenged the establishment in many ways.

Wouldn't it be nice if they did the same thing now, and made the music available without rights management systems, under a non-commercial Creative Commons license that let others reuse their songs?

It would be a wonderful gesture to the future, recognising that the Fab Four only succeeded because they were inspired by those who came before, taking riffs and musical forms from others.

Maybe it'll never happen with the Beatles. However, today's radical musicians may wish to consider the message that wraps up Justin Cone's Building on the Past before selling out:

Creativity always builds on the past.
And you're building the past right now.
Share now.
Shape tomorrow.

How to make a PDA really work for you

How to make a PDA really work for you 12/10/2003 08:02 AM
Personal digital assistants have the potential to become excellent tools after you fix them. PDAs, and more specifically Pocket PC, seem to be designed for sales and marketing people. You can add contacts, tasks, and check your calendar with the default out-of-the-box setup. Few of these activities are direly important to a network administrator, a programmer, or even a hacker which makes these devices mostly useless for anyone who works in computers. However, they are still computers, and there is a growing number of programs being written and ported to handheld devices which will make them useful to -- imagine this -- computer users.

Work and Camp

Work and Camp 08/14/2004 10:52 PM

I have been really busy with a client for the past few days, trying to get a good handle around a misbehaving web service benchmark.  Oracle JDBC drivers played a key role by hanging instead of complaining.  My opinion of Axis, an open source web service toolkit,  took a dive as well.  It's a complicated, buggy, and slow tool that makes you want to chuck it aside as soon as you use it.  Unfortunately, it's what most people are using on the Java side these days.

Thankfully, I'll be camping at Tahoe again starting this Sunday.  But before that, I got a ton of work to do Saturday.  Decent weekends are rare for me.  When I was young, I dedicated my weekends to my singles life, dating and clubing.  These days, I am working for either myself or my clients every weekend.

If I am not working on weekends, it's usually because I am recovering from too much work during the weekdays.  My method of recovery is to read or watch two three books or movies in a single sitting.  Of course, this leaves little room for quality family time so I am glad for the occasional camping.

Working Hard, Hardly Working

Working Hard, Hardly Working 06/15/2004 10:07 AM
Three years ago, I was working at a small company as the unofficial IT director / all-purpose computer bitch. I was laid off in early 2003, but to this day, the job presents me with difficulties; namely, that of telling prospective employers what I did, and for that matter, what the company itself did. I have virtually no idea what this company's function was, despite working there for over a year and a half, although I did learn how to spew an amazing amount of marketing jargon without thinking. As for my role there, it was essentially vast tracts of doing absolutely nothing, punctuated erratically by moments of panicking and crisis-defusion, usually involving something truly earth-shattering like the CEO not being able to print her email. When asked by interviewers "What did your company do?" I am forced to mumble vaguaries about consulting and hope they leave the issue alone.

Case Against Diebold To Continue...
Hopefully
12/02/2003 09:51 AM
While Diebold quietly backed down from their legal threats against anyone hosting their internal documents, showing that they knew their e-voting machines were not secure, one of the groups suing them says they're going to pus h forward with the lawsuit to get a decision saying that such whistleblowing (and especially just linking to others hosting such documents) is not a violation of copyright law. Hopefully the courts will hear the case. Unfortunately, recent history suggests that now that Diebold has withdrawn their lawsuits, the court may say the matter is closed - meaning that companies like Diebold can continue to improperly use the DMCA to threaten anyone blowing the whistle, unless those people can generate enough bad publicity to force the company to back down.

Voda fone in Japan Introduces Sharp's Two Megapixel Camera Phone

"From picturephoning.com I learned about Japan Wireless Watch reporting that Vodafone in Japan has introduced a two megapixel camera phone from Sharp. The Sharp V601SH (see below) has some nice features....

The V601SH includes such features as a Secure Digital card slot, a 20x zoom (I'm not a fan of digital zooms), automatic flash, the ability to bracket exposures (a very nice feature), the ability to create a collage by automatically overlapping a maximum of five photos, rapid fire shooting of up to 25 photos and the ability to shoot MPEG videos at 320 x 240 at 15 frames per second....

But the most difficult problem is not increasing the resolution but, rather, offering cellular data upload speeds that are fast enough to accommodate large graphics files and pricing the airtime/service at a reasonable rate. Data rates and pricing are not minor problems. A one megapixel photo is three times the resolution of a 640 x 480 VGA photo.

United States cellular networks will have a tough enough time supporting one megapixel uploads." [Reiter's Camera Phone Report]

Dang, and I was jealous of the one megapixel cameraphones! So now I need more portable storage (which I will shortly begin measuring in terabytes), more electrical power (over wireless would be great, although I'm sure our brains would be fried by the radiation), and more bandwidth. All for a cheap price.  ;-)
