Walmart sale of $30 DVD players causes
stampede
12/02/2003 01:24 AM
Ok, so $30 is a really good price for a DVD/VCR combination player, but is it worth nearly crushing another human being to death just to get one? Apparently so:A stampede of shoppers left a woman seriously hurt this morning. She was trampled by a crowd of bargain hunters at a Central Florida Walmart. 41-year-old Patricia Vanlester is at Halifax Medical Center tonight. Family members say she came to Walmart to buy an advertised DVD, but what she got was a trip to the hospital...When the store finally opened, shoppers grabbed for the item. People started fighting for the DVD player and pushed Vanlester to the ground. "I screamed and said stop don't step on her," Ellzey says. "My sister is on the ground but no one would listen." Walmart employees rushed to Vanlester. She was knocked unconscious. She was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center.Read...

Woman injured in Wal-Mart $30 DVD player
stampede might have faked it
12/05/2003 12:31 PM
You may recall our post on Monday about a Florida woman who was trampled in a mad stampede of people scrambling to buy a $30 DVD player at the local Wal-Mart. It was one of those stories that perfectly symbolized our nation's unhealthy obsession with shopping, right? Well, we might be unheathily obsessed with shopping, but there is growing evidence that the woman, who is a "frequent faller" who has managed to injure herself nine times before at various Wal-Marts around Florida, is faking it. Over the years she's also filed injury claims against six other businesses, as well. Read [Via LostRemote]...

Xeni Jardin: Hundreds of shoppers crammed into a brand-new Ikea store as it opened in Saudi Arabia, crushing three or more people to death.
A Saudi man and a Pakistani man were among those killed, officials in the port city of Jeddah said. The incident occurred after shoppers rushed into a branch of Ikea to claim a limited number of credit vouchers being offered to the public. More than 8,000 people had gathered near the store for the $150 vouchers, some of them having camped overnight. The nationality of the third person killed was not given. Sixteen people were injured.

An anti-obscenity statute sparked an online controversy in Norway recently, when the Norwegian online erotic magazine Cupido published some explicit, autobiographical art-porn shots from Brooklyn-based photographer Siege. The specific issue in question is not currently online in entirety, but you can see one of the offending shots here (upper right-hand corner). Some of the work was also recently blogged on BoingBoing, here. Cupido editor Cecilie Kjensli in Norway sent the following e-mail to the banned-in-Norway photographer:
"You know what. Something stupid has happened. Cupido har been sensuratet for first time during 20 years because of your pictures :) I have told you before that we are not aloud to print pictures with genital touhing. Our law system sais you cant show pictures that can offend people, so i thougt that no boddy would be offended of this in an erotic magazine. I understand if they were printed in a newspaper or a womans magazin, but not ours.

"Our distributor dissagred with me the way they understand the law, so they put a black spot in the face of the girls sukking you, I belive. So I told the press. That you are a trendy New York phothografer with a girlfriend and that you have a good appetite for sex and that you like taking pictures of you doing it. I read this on Nerve.com I think. Hope you'r not angry at me for this. I was wear of that something like this could happen, so when it did, I tipsed one of the biggest and best tabloid newspaper in Norway, and they made a huge reportage on it telling people that you actually can take off the black spot. And it showed the stupid porn-law, as we call it, from a good perspectiv. Here is the link to the reportage in the newspaper. I'm the one with the dildoes."

Link to Norwegian Newsmagazine Dagbladet's story about the "stupid porn law" (contains sexually explicit images, and lots of little black censorship circles) (also seen on Fl eshbot, where you will also find this link to the best porn news headline EVER. Free the Anal Creampie!)
