Cory Doctorow: Pablos sez, "This I Love Bees thing seems to be getting out of hand. It is some kind of massive alternate reality game that may be related to Halo 2. The site has been counting down to August 24th and now it looks like it is heading into meatspace. Now there are all these GPS coordinates where people are planning to go to all over the U.S. on Tuesday. There's all kinds of speculation about it on these forums and in #beekeepers on irc.chat-solutions.org. Anyway, the gargantuan scale of this thing makes me want to check it out if only for the bizarre flashmob appeal." (Thanks, Pablos!)

Augmented Reality uses computer graphics that are placed over the “real world” in front of the person viewing it. It is the latest thing in mapping technology, allowing you to see it from the map’s perspective.

Cory Doctorow: Total Immersions has an "augmented reality" tool called D'Fusion Technology, as demonstrated in the Windows Media (ugh) video-stream (ugh) linked from the page below. It's pretty stunning: real people and objects are captured with video cameras and then three-dimensional virtual objects are seamlessly matted in, so that the demonstrator appears to be holding a bouquet of flowers that turns into a lightsaber, then a helicopter flies over the audience, etc. The gaming applications are pretty rad -- think of EyeToy with about a thousand times more granularity and interaction. magic_ar_book.jpgA few folks in New Zealand have developed the next natural evolution of an old children's staple: the bedtime story. The book reads like a normal book, if desired, but when accompanied with a handheld (or head-based) display and computer vision tracking technology, the story comes to life in front of them. In another example of augmented reality bringing us really cool stuff, the director of the lab working on the project tells us "You can see animated virtual characters overlaid on the real book pages and hear the voice of [the narrator] reading the story." Technology Review's article explains what's keeping this technology from coming to market, at least for now, and when we might see it outside of the lab setting.

Halo 2 vs. Tribes 2

Halo 2 vs. Tribes 2 12/22/2004 01:03 AM

I went to visit my brother in Colorado over the weekend, and he had a copy of Halo 2 with an X-Box Live subscription. I didn't get to play it, but I watched him quite a bit.

X-Box Live is hailed as the big thing that propels Halo 2 into gaming infamy. However, in watching my brother play, I was struck by how much it looked like a similar, older game: Tribes. It was perhaps more graphically advanced than Tribes, but it didn't look much better than Tribes 2.

Gameplay dynamics seemed pretty much the same. My brother was amazed at the idea of playing people from around the world in a giant game of capture the flag, but I just couldn't kick the thought that I had seen this all before.

Is there anyone who has played both Halo 2 and Tribes 2 that can comment on how similar they are or which is better? Is Halo 2 that good, or is it just Tribes 2 for the console-playing masses? (The flame doors have just swung open...)
