Identity Theft And Meth
Identity Theft And Meth
06/08/2004 10:50 AMUSA Today is running an AP article talking about how law enforcement
is working on
bet
ter ways to combat identity theft, where someone mentions that all
of those involved with identity theft also are involved with
methamphetamine. That was certainly true of the
profile
of an identity theft ring we wrote about last year, but it seems
like focusing on that aspect shouldn't be useful for very long. With
the rate at which identity theft crime is growing, it seems likely
that it, too, will start to get taken over by organized crime groups -
and will become increasingly sophisticated. In other words, if you
thought identity theft was bad now, it's only going to get worse. At
what point will credit agencies and financial institutions realize
that
they need to take the issue of identity theft more
seriously?

Top VCs Trying To Discourage The
Competition
01/27/2004 02:53 PMIt seems that some of the bigger name venture capitalists out there
are suddenly saying that
there's too much venture money flowing into the market
again and that means that it's much more difficult for the horses
they've backed to compete. Apparently, they would prefer it if
venture financing remained an exclusive little club where the old boys
could pick two or three players and let them fight it out in the dog
pit, and then pick up their winnings at the IPO window. Of course,
I'm not sure why these guys should care so much. Assuming they know
how to make a good investment, then who cares if the other VC firms
are throwing their money away? They always talk about how much their
guidance and experience helps the companies they invest in - so what
do they care if lesser VCs are backing other companies that compete
with their companies?

MMOs discourage heroism, FRPGs encourage
it
MMOs discourage heroism, FRPGs encourage
it
08/07/2004 05:30 AMVery good Terra Nova post analyses the ways that Massively Multiplayer
games discourage the acts of heroism that made D&D so much fun to
play.
On one level, this tale highlights the plight of low levels in the
MMORPG. They pose the litmus test: do opportunities for heroism exist
for them in and amongst the treadmills? Is it ever possible for a
low-level to make a *real difference?* Perhaps, for some, an
exceptional stand by a NOOB ("newbie") party against MOB trains (large
flocks of NPC monsters) in some NOOB dungeon somewhere, qualifies. But
is there a more fundamental difference?
Consider. Can one make the argument that MMORPGs, as an adventuring
platform, have gone astray with player = single(few)-avatar
assumption? Because of the investment of time (read treadmills),
social and emotional capital, players are practically limited by the
number of characters they can play. Consequently, they are loath to
get in "over their heads" and virtual worlds are loath to offer dire
scenarios with only heroic exits for a few. Hardly a profound point,
but the question: is such a dynamic, in some guise, necessary for the
organic emergence of heroic narratives in an MMORPG?

Gays Mobilize Against Meth Addiction
(AP)
04/03/2005 08:06 PMAP - It's a Friday evening, traditional kickoff time for the party
scene in New York's gay community, but the 75 men packed into a small
room at a gay health center aren't in a partying mood. Through a
humbling 12-step program modeled after Alcoholics Anonymous, they are
battling to kick their addiction to methamphetamine, and in doing so
escape an epidemic that is roiling urban gay communities nationwide
with disease, despair, embarrassment and anger.

Nintendo to Release Pink GBA SP
Nintendo to Release Pink GBA SP
08/07/2004 10:36 AM
Nintendo
is following up their well-received custom Game Boy Advance SPs (like
the popular NES Edition model) with an all-new, "girl-targeted" 'Pink'
model, essentially a reissue of the 'pink satin' model available since
launch in Japan. I take some offense, though, that only girls will
find the new Pink edition appealing; I think it will perfectly
compliment my bristling, kinky chest hair.
The new GBA SP is scheduled for an October 29th release, you know,
right before Pinkoween.

responsibility for this post. Not only can you not buy this pink
'Sakura' PSP case by itself, it's only available in Japan with a game

which may or may not be related to the Three Kingdoms series.
But it's pink and it has cherry blossoms on it, so it has applied
