"Feed Your Reader" Firefox Feed
Extension

"Feed Your Reader" Firefox Feed
Extension

When Firefox add ed RSS support, I had mixed reactions. On the one hand, I was excited by the boost RSS would receive by being supported in a popular browser. But on the other hand, for obvious reasons I wasn't wild about how Firefox built RSS into the browser without enabling users to choose an external RSS reader.

So, I was glad when several FeedDemon customers talking about building an extension to enable FeedDemon to take advantage of the new Firefox RSS features.

Michael Koziarski rose to the challenge and created F eed Your Reader, a Firefox extension that enables you to subscribe to feed in FeedDemon - or any other RSS reader that supports the feed: // protocol. Which means that even though the extension was designed with FeedDemon in mind, it's not specific to FeedDemon. Initial tests show that it also works with NetNewsWire on the Mac.

Once this extension is installed, you'll see an additional "FYR" icon in Firefox's status bar right next to the existing RSS icon. Clicking the FYR icon displays a menu of auto-discovered feeds, and clicking one of these feeds will display FeedDemon's "New Channel" wizard to subscribe to it.

Details on Feed Your Reader are h ere, and the project page is here. If you're viewing this in Firefox, the download link to the XPI (extension) is here .

Shut Up! "The EU has requested that member states come to a standstill at noon today to observe a three-minute silence for victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami. Is this just a shallow, belated gesture - or the best way to show our solidarity?" Blake Morrison of the Guardian asks. There's also an interesting "History of Silences" at the end of the article.

Got a Mac, so shut up already

Got a Mac, so shut up already 02/10/2004 02:51 AM
I just installed OS X on the used G4 I bought for my father-in-law. Having installed Windows scores of times — probably more than a 100 in my lifetime — and having installed Linux a few times with mixed success, I was interested in how the Mac would do. Answer: Pretty durn easy. As easy as Windows XP, and definitely easier than Red Hat or Mandrake. And then the fun began. The UI effects are real crowd-pleasers. It matters to me that the droplets of water play catch as you wait for something to install. Let's not say I'm superficial....

Shut Up and Serve Ads

Shut Up and Serve Ads 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
Russell Beattie points out that Google's terms of service requires that you not publicly discuss AdSense. Jason Kottke points out this "seems to fly in the face of Sergey Brin's Google rule #1: 'Don't be evil'." Cory Doctorow agrees saying "Google shouldn't ask all its users to submit to an unreasonable restriction on their speech in order to contain the spread of negative information about its service." Meanwhile, other annoying provisions are that you can't: have multiple accounts (which is useful when you want to keep separate statistics for separate sites), talk to advertisers about their ads, disclose any results, get paid for anything Google considers "fradulent clicks", find out why they're considered "fraudulent clicks", pass on payments to anyone. And Google can cancel you whenever without a reason. Erik Thauvin and Derek Powazek, both well-respected web writers, got their accounts and payments canceled for "fraudulent clicks", even though they didn't try to cheat. They ran ads for Google and now Google refuses to show them any evidence of wrongdoing or pay them for their space. Some suggest that Google simply cancels accounts when they payouts get too high to avoid paying. *Update:* We previously reported that the don't-talk-about-AdSense provision was recently added. Several sources, including a Google employee, have said this is a mistake. We've corrected the story above and apologize for the error....

What If Microsoft Just Shut Down?

What If Microsoft Just Shut Down? 08/12/2004 11:41 AM

Closing Microsoft: Fascinating concept here: just close down Microsoft. Bill Gates said he wants to keep running the company until it's no longer fun. Dvorak opines that this time has come, and he explores how you would just shut down a company like Microsoft. Absurd, but interesting.

As this is written, the asset or book value of Microsoft per share, including the $70-plus billion in the bank, is a fraction of the stock price. But if Microsoft can knock down the stock price with one or two dubious reports and collect another $50 billion or so while moving everything offshore, it might be possible to pay out the money to the shareholders and close the company. Just walk.

[...] all the principals would have their money, houses, and cars, and would never have to worry about Microsoft going into a pathetic decline, as most companies eventually do. The closure would be one of the most interesting episodes in the history of business.

MPlayer shut down

MPlayer shut down 04/04/2005 06:05 AM

James Seng reports on MPlayer - an open source all formats media player - has been shut down.

MPlayer is rift with all sorts of reverse engineered, nonlicensed versions of copyrighted, proprietary software - so it doesn't surprise me. But it's official - you can't use other people's lock-in technology for unlocking.

Yah gotta start over from scratch.

SCO Ordered To Put Up Or Shut Up

SCO Ordered To Put Up Or Shut Up 12/05/2003 06:41 PM
I've been avoiding posting the nearly daily back and forth stories about the SCO/Linux battle because it's almost too crazy to believe. However, it sounds like the battle of dueling open letters and press releases may finally be coming to an end as a judge has told SCO to show the evidence against IBM already. This is bad news for SCO, because they've been acting as if it was all IBM's fault that no evidence had been shown - and the judge clearly does not buy that argument. Still, it could be a very long time before this case is settled, so we should be seeing plenty more craziness for the next few years.

Transmeta to Shut Down?

Transmeta to Shut Down? 06/05/2005 11:46 PM

Transmeta sells microprocessor unit: Apparently Transmeta — well known as the landing place of Linus Torvalds — is going to shut down. They just sold the Crusoe line of processors to a Hong Kong company.

The deal marks the latest twist in the Transmeta melodrama. The Sunnyvale, California-based company, which counted Linus Torvalds as an early employee, hoped to challenge Intel in notebooks with processors that consumed far less power. Despite signing deals with brand-name manufacturers such as Sony and Fujitsu in 2000, tepid performance reviews and product delays followed in 2001.

Deals dried up, three CEOs came and went, and financial losses increased. Since 1998, the company has posted accumulated losses of $635 million on revenues of $134 million.

Transmeta's early successes, however, did have a lasting effect: They prompted Intel to come up with the Centrino processor, chipset and network-interface bundle.

I remember when this company launched amid total secrecy. They wouldn't tell anyone what they were doing or working on. When they hired Linus, everyone went atwitter about what they were up to. Sad to see it end this way.

A threat to national security! Adam McGaughey, the owner of a Stargate fansite has been slapped with criminal charges (Criminal Copyright Infringement and Trafficking in Counterfeit Services) after being reported to the FBI by the MPAA for including Amazon links to encourage fans to purchase DVDs of the show. To build its case, the FBI invoked a provision of the USA Patriot Act to obtain financial records from his ISP. And, since he "conspired" with thousands of fans worldwide by providing these Amazon Market links, he could be facing up to 20 years in jail if the government invokes RICO.

Regulators Help SBC Shut Off Competition

Regulators Help SBC Shut Off Competition 09/24/2004 11:32 AM
  • Mercury News: SBC Gets PL to Raise Wholesale Phone Rates. The California Public Utilities Commission on Thursday gave SBC the go-ahead for a 20 percent increase in the rates it charges competitors for use of its phone network, a move that critics say will eventually result in less competition and higher rates for landline telephone service in California.
  • Once again, a big regional phone company -- already overwhelmingly dominant in its market -- pushes regulators to do its bidding. And once again, genuine competition loses. SBC and other phone giants have been claiming that they've subsidized competitors who want to rent their lines -- an infrastructure they built with monopoly control and revenues, back when no one had any choice at all. They've never made a persuasive case that it's a subsidy, and the fact that they never used that alleged subsidy to enter each others' territories is almost conclusive evidence that the subsidy doesn't exist. But never mind; the rate hike is here. And the more serious question is whether they'll thwart data-line challengers, not just those who might offer a local voice alternative. That's where we're heading: a duopoly of phone and cable providers that will stifle our broadband future until they can exert absolute control over the content of the data that flows on "their" lines, not just the lines and the cost of access.
