In “The Virtue of Selfishness”, Ayn Rand wrote:
Ethics is not a mystic fantasy—nor a social
convention—nor a dispensable,
subjective luxury. ... Ethics is an objective necessity of
man’s survival—not
by the grace of the supernatural nor of your neighbors nor of your
whims, but by the
grace of reality and the nature of life.

05/18/2004 04:38 PMIdo Kenan, NRG Maariv has filed a story about Google's ethics
committee. He sent us this translation: Google has an ethics committee
for decisions on changes to their algorithms. The committee is
comprised of Google workers "who are concerned about ethics", said Dr.
Eran Gabber, a software engineer with Google, at a lecture yesterday
(Monday) at the Tel Aviv University. Dr. Gabber came to Israel to
recruit Computer Science students for an annual Google project, where
100 students from around the world are invited to work at Google for a
12-week period during the summer. Dr. Gabber said: "We change Pagerank
when we find that spammers are abusing it, but we don't change it
often. There's an internal ethics committee in Google. Internally,
there are people who are concerned about ethics. In Google, there are
a lot of people who find ethics important". There are photos at the
original article (in Hebrew). Thanks again to Ido Kenan, NRG Maariv

Scientists Take Stock of Their Ethics
03/28/2005 03:54 AMTaking the old adage, invest in what you know; it would be logical to
assume that those working in the life sciences would gravitate toward
financial investments in the health care sector. This is not to say
that “insider knowledge” is the motivating factor, but rather that if
one is a scientist, one has a natural affinity for science and hence
might favor “science-related” stocks. [PRWEB Mar 28, 2005]

Andre sez, "You mentioned the Government Printing Office (GPO) in an
entry about applying DRM to government documents. Well, my associate
Domingo and I have been on to the GPO for a while now - they have a
listerv that has some
suspicious stuff, such as the OGE-ETHICSINFO-L list which gives
ethical advice to the executive branch, and requires you have a .gov
or .mil e-mail address to join and remain a member of the list. I
joined the list and dumped the contents using wget in August, and
turned up some interesting stuff, such as 20040419.txt, which advises
the executive branch to turn down gifts from Microsoft. We filed a
FOIA request with the GPO for info on their mailing list and are
awaiting a response."
It has come to OGE's attention that Microsoft Corp. is offering free
promotional software valued at over $500 to IT personnel at various
agencies. OGE has written Microsoft asking it to refrain from doing
this, citing the implications associated with the Standards of Ethical
Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch. We understand that the
Department of the Army also has sent a letter to Microsoft asking that
these gifts cease. Please advise your IT personnel that they are
prohibited from personally accepting these gifts. However, OGE does
recognize that an agency may have gift acceptance authority that
allows
acceptance of this software by the agency for its use.

US Doctors Want Mobile Phones In
Hospitals Too
09/27/2004 11:27 AMWhile we've already written about doctors in the UK
saying
hospital bans on mobile phones should be dropped it appears that
there's a
similar movement in the US.
Healthcare officials are starting to call the ban a "myth," an "old
wives' tale" and "a silly thing." Some, though, are still worried,
and claim anecdotal evidence that mobile phones can interfere with
equipment -- despite increasing evidence that it's very specific, more
reasonably blocked, circumstances that would cause the interference.
In fact, some are saying that allowing mobile phones in hospitals
would do much more to save lives, noting how many deaths there are due
to prescription mistakes that might be solved by a simple, quick phone
call in the hospital -- while also pointing out that "there is no
evidence that a cell phone has ever killed a patient."

ully moved into the digital age, plenty haven't budged from their
old paper-based filing system. It's not so much that hospitals
dislike technology. They buy all sorts of advanced medical technology
all the time. But, when it comes to administrative technology and
things like computerized prescription systems - which might save lives
by preventing mistakes - hospitals don't seem to care. The complaints
range from doctors who are afraid the new system will slow them down,
to hospitals who point out that the only benefit to these systems is
to the patients (you know, the folks who don't want to die) and not
the hospital itself. Yes, the health of a patient is secondary to
profitability these days. Of course, considering the high price of
malpractice lawsuits, you would think such systems might pay for
themselves. It's certainly a
political
hot potato, though. Politicians are now looking for ways to force
hospitals to join the twenty-first century and update their computer
systems to prevent errors.
