Remember the Lying Swift Boat Veterans for Truth who made up a bunch
of base smears about John Kerry's military record and aired them in a
TV spot? They even published an open letter in which they lied some
more, claiming to have served with Kerry when they hadn't.
Well, it turns out that some of the swift boat veterans whose name
appeared at the bottom of that open letter never saw it, never signed
it, and don't agree with it. Those Lying Swift Boat Veterans For
Truth! Whacky.
"It's kind of like stealing my identity," said Anderson, who spent a
year on a swift boat as an engine man and gunner.
The letter, which was posted on the Swift Boat Veter-ans for Truth Web
site, claims the Demo-cratic presidential candidate has "grossly and
knowingly distorted the conduct of the American soldiers, marines,
sailors and airmen of that (Vietnam) war."...
"After reading the letter," Anderson said, "it kind of got under my
skin. I had never come across a situation where someone used my name
without my support or approval. It's not a very comforting feeling."
What's worse, he said, he disagrees with the letter.
"Had they asked me to use my name, I wouldn't have allowed them to,"
he said...
Anderson does not know how the Swift Boat Vets for Truth got his name,
but it appears exactly as it has appeared on rosters at swift boat vet
reunions. He suspects the list was pulled from the Swift Boat Sailors
Association, a nonpolitical, not-for-profit organization linking swift
boat veterans.

between the organization and the Bush administration's staff,

It also delves into the Lying Veterans' own on-the-record statements,

Vietnam-era military "service," a questionable period for the
president at best. Josh Marshall notes the tight connections, politically and financially,
between the anti-Kerry "Swift boat veterans for truth" and Bush and
his associates, and wonders why Bush isn't man enough to disclaim the
sleaze. Marshall notes:"In any real world sense, this
is a front for the president. And for the saps who are willing to give
the president the most improbable benefits of the doubt -- that this
is something he has nothing to do with and is utterly beyond his
control -- well, he won't even toss them a bone by making even the
most innocuous statement of
disassociation."
Meanwhile, the Washington Post
uncovers information about the co-author of the Swift boaters'
accompanying book that pretty much shreds his claim that Kerry wasn't under fire during
the operation that resulted in the Democratic candidate's Bronze
Star:"But Thurlow's military records, portions of which
were released yesterday to The Washington Post under the Freedom of
Information Act, contain several references to "enemy small arms and
automatic weapons fire" directed at "all units" of the five-boat
flotilla. Thurlow won his own Bronze Star that day, and the citation
praises him for providing assistance to a damaged Swift boat "despite
enemy bullets flying about him."

That we are still fighting about the Vietnam War is sad. Watching an
old political fight try to finish itself thirty years later in either
the wreckage of the Kerry campaign or its triumph over the attempt to
wreck-- that's sad. William B. Rood of the Chicago Tribune spoke out
Sunday; he was a commander of a swift boat who had first hand
knowledge. Rood thought it was sad that we're still fighting about

AP: Bush urges end to TV attack ads by
outside groups, whatever their target. President Bush denounced
campaign commercials aired by outside groups on Monday, including an
ad that accuses John Kerry of lying about his combat record in
Vietnam.
Bush still won't directly address the
substance of the sleazy Swift boat ads. That's shameful. I hope some
reporter pins him down on this one of these days.
The stifling of the "independent" political action groups is a
separate topic. There's no doubt that the system is becoming even more
poisonous than it already was. Is making the 527s illegal -- and
trampling even more on political speech, however obnoxious it can be
at times -- the right approach? I don't think so.

Spinsanity's Brendan Nyhan says I've contributed to the mis-impression that
John Kerry knew he was volunteering for "particularly dangerous" duty
when he took command of a Swift boat in Vietnam. He cites a
Boston Globe story quoting Kerry's observation that the Swift boat
duty he thought he was signing up for was relatively safe for a
Vietnam posting.
I have some quibbles with his interpretation of what I wrote in this post a few days ago; I'd argue that
"relatively safe" in Vietnam was still dangerous, so that my post was
technically correct (I didn't say "particularly" dangerous).
But that's splitting hairs. Nyhan is undoubtedly right to say that
some readers probably got a mis-impression from my posting. So mea
culpa.

The nasty fight over John Kerry's Vietnam War record (we're waiting
for similar obsessive scrutiny in the media of George W. Bush's Guard
record) continued to rage over the weekend, with new eyewitnesses
coming forward to back Kerry and his campaign trying to put the onus
on President Bush to denounce the dirty work being done on his behalf.
So far, no denunciations from the Bush-Cheney camp, just an attempt to
equate the lies of the Swift Boat Veterans for "Truth" with all 527
group activity, including MoveOn.org. The Kerry campaign, late to the
fight on this one, seemingly caught off-guard that the SBVT campaign
to destroy his candidacy would have such legs, issued a TV ad on Sunday calling on Bush to "denounce the smear"
and get back to the issues.
