NewsFactor - On the heels of -- and perhaps in response to -- its recent struggles with declining market share, mobile-handset maker Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has signed former Coca-Cola executive Keith Pardy to head up its branding efforts. Pardy, a 17-year Coke veteran, was vice president of the company's non-cola branding efforts.

NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

headset_gps_nkoi.jpg imageAnd last but not least (if you're reading from the bottom up; otherwise, welcome to the Nokia posts!) are these two new peripherals from Nokia, a new Nokia Wireless Headset HS-11W headset with a 6 hour talk time, and this Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W that also connects to your phone or PDA via Bluetooth (the GPS may not actually be new - it seems sort of familiar - but I don't exactly recall hearing about it before). The GPS unit uses the same battery and charge plug as most Nokia phones, so you can use your existing charge to go along with it.

The headset should be out later this year, while the GPS unit isn't scheduled until Q1 2005.

Design refresh

Design refresh 06/17/2005 03:29 PM

Made a few changes to the design of the site just now. If it looks a little goofy, you may need to press shift-reload or restart your browser to load the new stylesheet (I can't believe it's 2005 and I still need to say this...come on, browser makers). The header and footer are different (site-wide), as is the front page. It's a continuation of the tag idea I introduced here almost a year ago and an amalgam of a couple different designs I've been tinkering with for the last few months...with the combination, I finally got it where I want it. It looks pretty much the same as the last design (yellow tab/banner at the top), but it's going to be more flexible going forward...and I just plain like it better than the last one (which I got tired of pretty quickly).

Do Brands Matter Any More Online?

Do Brands Matter Any More Online? 08/11/2004 05:30 PM
Remember how the internet was supposed to take out the middleman, get rid of all brands, and just let everyone buy stuff based on the lowest price around? Then reality set in and people and their actual buying habits showed that people don't just factor in price (though, it's clearly important) but other elements as well. However, now that we've got signs of 1999 again, it appears people are back to predictin g a death of brand, even as various online scams have become even more common, and brands you can trust would seem to be more important than ever.

Old Brands, Nostalgia And Remarketing

Old Brands, Nostalgia And Remarketing 01/28/2004 03:25 AM
Old Brands Never Die; They're Just Waiting For Someone To Wake Them Up: With the Nostalgia and Retro boom playing off the increasing number of niche markets made possible by the Web, it's time to start desperately plugging those favourite, time-honoured brands which "they" unforgivably stopped making, leaving their loyal fans in the lurch. What would you bring back, given half a chance? (I'll weigh in with Sobranie Black Russian cigarettes; the original Volkswagen Beetle; the Oldsmobile or, definitely, the Olympia manual Monica typewriter.)

Milwaukee Brands Local Wi-Fi

Milwaukee Brands Local Wi-Fi 03/24/2005 11:43 AM
The Wisconsin city has a booster group that will hand out Wi-Fi decals for local shops: Spirit of Milwaukee will provide businesses with decals that identify them as Wi-Fi hotspots extending an earlier campaign by the non-profit cultural group to identify high-tech businesses with a blue light. (K-Mart, move over?) It's an interesting idea to establish a local brand for Wi-Fi availability: because each location will have different bandwidth and network quality, prices (from fee to yow-ee), and expectations (make a purchase, use the network), it might raise the right expectation in users. But it certainly will help local residents and frequent business travelers better know where to unplug in....
