Auvi SA1500: iPod Mini-Sized 20GB Player

Auvi SA1500: iPod Mini-Sized 20GB Player 08/23/2004 10:51 AM

auvi-thumb.jpg imageNow this is the way to challenge the iPod: go smaller. While most players appeal to the nerd core by packing in tons of obscure (if welcome) features, the Auvi SA1500 tries a different tack, cramming a 20GB hard drive into a unit just a hair bigger than the iPod mini. Add in a 20 hour playback time and it's easy to call this one a contender even without having seen one in person. The price is too high; UK retailer Firebox is expected to have them on sale soon for around $450, although for whatever reason the UK always seems to get nailed with higher prices, so a US model would probably be cheaper. If they can get it out there, though, and not screw up the user interface, the SA1500 will definitely turn a few heads.

Sony’s Network Walkman NW-HD1 - the
world’s smallest 20GB ATRAC3 player.
07/01/2004 08:41 PM
Engadget: Sony’s Network Walkman NW-HD1 - the world’s smallest 20GB ATRAC3 player. "The Network Walkman is supposed to be able to get an astounding thirty hours of battery life on a single charge." Dell has been advertising "twice the battery life of iPod" on the radio lately, but the fast talk at the end of the commercial says they assume 64kbps files. Most people probably have 128kbps files on their iPods, so the Dell DJ probably accesses the hard disk half as often -- voila, twice the battery life. And if you use 48kbps audio, like Sony does, then you get three times the iPod's battery life -- around 30 hours. When everybody's using the same parts, the only way to get a 2x or 3x advantage is to cheat.

Some of the graphic design geeks over at Kirupa Forum decided to have a 'Logo Design Battle,' a sort of visual arts freestyle competition, and they chose Gizmodo to riff off of. And as much as we love our current design (not that we aren't always tweaking), we thought it was pretty cool they liked Gizmodo enough to use us as a springboard, so we thought maybe we'd up the ante a bit and offer a new JetAudio iAudio M3 20GB hard disk MP3 player to the winner of the contest (after we review the damn thing, that is). So if you're a designer and you want to head over to their forums and join the battle, we'd love to see what neat graphics you come up with.

nhjvhd1500.jpg imageWhen I4U mentioned this new 1.5GB hard disk music player from NHJ Japan, they wondered why NHJ isn't released a 4GB version to compete with the Apple iPod mini, musing that perhaps Apple bought all the 4GB drives available. Last I heard, that's pretty much the case, actually.

This VHD-1500 player, while still the same price as the iPod mini, does at least beat it in one area: it's just a little smaller and a little lighter (plus has the FM receiver that Apple continues to refuse to integrate into the iPod).

Apple Music Player for Phones

Apple Music Player for Phones 07/27/2004 11:13 AM
Reuters reports a deal between Apple and Motorola to bring iTunes-like capability to mobile phones. Steve Jobs is quoted as saying, "Wouldn't it be great if you could take a dozen of your favorite songs with you on your phone. We thought it would be great if together Motorola and Apple could give them (consumers) a small taste of what this digital music revolution is about." Many of us have already done this. I do it every time I travel with my Treo 600 phone, as I noted in this column a few days ago. Except I have an advantage: I'm using MP3 files, which aren't subjected to Apple's version of Digital Restrictions Management that prevent me from using what I've purchased the way I want to use it. Most phones will soon have enough onboard memory for this kind of thing. Users want access to their music, but they don't want DRM speed bumps. I hope Apple and Motorola don't build them in.

Music player market heats up

Music player market heats up 03/19/2005 03:27 AM
Digital music players have exploded into the mainstream market with Apple leading the pack, offering some of the most pricey players available. After introducing the iPod in 2001, Apple has become the digital music market leader, currently holding 80% of the market in the United States. Pew Internet & American Life Project in February found that about a quarter of people with household incomes of $75,000 or more owned digital music players but only 6 percent owned the devices among those earning less than $30,000. "iPods and MP3 players are becoming a mainstream technology for consumers" Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project said. "More growth in the market is inevitable as new devices become available, as new players enter the market, and as new social uses for iPods/MP3 players become popular." Apple introduced the iPod shuffle in January at the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco. The introduction of the shuffle was a change from Apple's regular iPod price tag, with the device selling for less than $100. This price breakthrough for Apple allows those have been seeking a lower price point to purchase one of the sought-after iPods while still maintaining a bank account balance. A recent surge of iPod clones have been tossed into the market, confusing iPod desirers with their similar names and looks. A Taiwan-based maker of digital audio products, Luxpro, introduced its Super shuffle digital music player at the CeBIT conference in Germany last week. Luxpro's Super shuffle is nearly identical to Apple's iPod shuffle measuring in at nearly the same size but, unlike Apple's iPod shuffle, it offers a voice recorder and FM tuner. The company even had iPod silhouette-style advertising to promote the device around the show. Another Asian company, Orient Expert Technology Co., Ltd., introduced an iPod-copied device called IPOD Mini. Like Apple's iPod mini, the Orient Expert IPOD has a 4 GB hard drive but offers an optional FM tuner. With the market finding more competition, even if it is among direct clones of the iPod, prices in the market are dropping with the introduction of competitive devices offering additional features, at a lower price. With this in mind, Apple may have to consider offering additional features and lower prices to stay at the head of the game.

Neuros II Reviewed

Neuros II Reviewed 08/20/2004 12:50 PM

neuros_1ii.jpg imageThe Register has a properly in-depth review of the Neuros II 20GB HDD music player, a bulky and sort of awkward device whose main claim to fame is swappable 'backpacks' that allow additional hard drives to be added without the need for buying a whole different unit. Sadly, it seems that the implementation is less than the sum of its concepts, although I have to say I was intrigued by one aspect of its direct-to-MP3 recording of FM radio. By using a service called HiSi ("Hear it. Save it.") the Neuros is able to identify - after being plugged back into your computer - songs you've recorded from the radio by comparing short audio snippets to those in HiSi's database, which returns the correct ID3 tag. It even color codes the results depending on how certain it is that it's identified the song correctly.

Unfortunately, that's about the best part. The 20GB Neuros II is a pretty good value, though - an 80GB model can be had for just $450.

Did RealNetworks Violate The DMCA With
Their Music Player?
01/16/2004 01:03 PM
The folks over at DRM Watch believe that RealNetworks must have violated the DMCA to create their latest RealPlayer 10 software that can play songs downloaded off of other music download stores like iTunes or Napster 2.0. No matter what you think of the DMCA, though, I don't think that's true at all. The point of the copy protection technology used by iTunes and Napster (and others) is to prevent copying of the songs. If you're playing the song from the same location with a different application, then no copying has occurred. The only issue is building a player that recognizes the specific file formats - and Apple with their AAC files and Napster with their WMA files are pretty well known file formats. I don't think either application was designed so that songs downloaded to them could only be played within their software. So, am I missing something, or is this article off-base? If they are off-base, then it means it's the second time in a row - as the whole point of this article was to correct a mistake in the guy's last article, where he claimed that RealPlayer 10 couldn't play songs from iTunes or Napster.
