08/20/2004 12:25 AMInternet security experts have found two "flaws" with Microsoft's
long-awaited security update for its Windows XP operating system but
the software giant insists that the new Service Pack 2 (SP2) is

Microsoft says SP2 offers users the latest security "innovations" but
Internet security experts say hackers could exploit cracks in SP2
defences to exploit a user's computer.
Microsoft began rolling out SP2 this week. It says the update fixes

Japanese pissed over DRM Restrictions
Japanese pissed over DRM Restrictions
05/26/2004 04:15 AMSeems Japanese TV Viewers are complaining about DRM restrictions.
Being they are not used to having to deal with such harsh copy /
copyright restrictions they have every right to complain they pay for
their programming as most of us do. I think the backlash will be the
loudest in the United States when the heavy hand of the MPAA and RIAA
start affecting peoples fair use rights. [Slashdot]

Linspire CEO To Offer Music Service With
No DRM Restrictions
02/05/2005 10:16 PMFormer MP3.com chief and Linspire CEO Michael Robertson will
reenter the music world next week with MP3tunes, a service that
promises music without DRM restrictions.
The announcement will be
made next week at the Linspire
Desktop Summit, where a new VOIP company, SwitchVox, will also be
launched. Robertson's other venture, SIPphone, will also introduce a
$39 device designed to facilitate Internet calling.
Robertson
said he's not worried about the record labels and their requirements
for rights-management technology. At the time it was sold, Robertson
said, MP3.com attracted top artists, like Maroon 5 and Linkin Park. "I
think the labels are interested in one thing: selling," he said. "If
you build the audience they will come."

Restrictions And Price Remain iTunes
Turnoffs
04/17/2004 11:09 PMThe iTunes Music Store's success hides a couple of unsettling trends.
One is pricing -- a lot of albums now exceed the store's customary
$9.99 price, and a few even exceed their cost as CDs in a store. The
other is compatibility -- though a variety of consumer-electronics
devices could be made compatible with iTUnes music files, the only one
Apple permits is its own iPod digital-music player. By Rob Pegoraro,
