ABC News story on Cryptome.org

ABC News story on Cryptome.org 08/13/2004 12:42 PM
John Young's Cryptome-- an online repository for publicly available information -- has long been on my short list of essential 'Net bookmarks. The site archives "material on freedom of expression, privacy, cryptology, dual-use technologies, national security, intelligence, and secret governance -- open, secret and classified documents," among other things. This ABC News story details a recent incident in which Department of Homeland Security officials paid Young a visit, expressing concern about some of the content he'd posted online. It's not the first time he's been visited by federal authorities over that issue, and I'd wager it won't be the last.
Officials questioned Young about information he had posted about the 2004 Democratic National Convention, including satellite photos of the convention site and the location of specific police barricades referred to on the site as "a complete joke." In response to a complaint, two special agents from the FBI's counterterrorism office in New York City interviewed Young in November 2003. "They said, 'Why didn't you call us about this? Why are you telling the public?' And we said, 'Because it's out there and you can see it. You folks weren't doing anything,' " Young told ABC News.

The agents, according to Young, stressed they knew that nothing on the site was illegal. Young added: "They said, 'What we'd like you to do, if you're approached by anyone that you think intends to harm the United States, we're asking you to let us know that.' "

Link to news story, and did you know Cryptome is also served up in tasty RSS flavor? (via Joi )

A friend in Silicon Valley sent me this article on career choices for engineers in the U.S.

[If you're looking to transition out of coding you might consider opening a helicopter flight school in Edmonton.  The economy here is booming due to the high price of oil (Alberta actually has more petroleum reserves than Saudi Arabia but they require some work to extract, unlike in the Persian Gulf).  There is one CFI here with a Robinson R22.  He charges CAD$500 per hour!  The price in the U.S. is closer to USD$200 or only about half.]

AP - When Terri Schiavo collapsed 15 years ago, George H.W. Bush was in the White House and she was just an ordinary insurance company clerk who liked stuffed animals and romance novels, and was desperately trying to have children. By the time she died this past week, Bush's son was president, and she had become the central figure in a national debate on the right to die and on who gets to decide.

Collaborative, open textbook 06/15/2004 10:12 AM
OpenTextBook.org is a collaborative project wherein university students (and others) can turn their course notes into a giant, open textbook. You need to know how to use CVS to contribute and edit the book, but there's a daily PDF snapshot of the state of the project, which is looking pretty good! Link (Thanks, Steve!)

Open Textbook Project
http://otp.inlimine.org/

The mission of the open textbook project is to develop openly copyrighted (copylefted) textbooks using the free software development model. The books, developed collaboratively, would be freely available to download, modify, print and distribute. Not only are textbooks unavailable to a great number of students in the US and abroad simply due to cost, few textbooks are universally suitable for courses in any given subject and many are simply sub-standard. The Open Textbook Project aims to address these issues by using a collaborative development model which has proven its effectiveness in the world of free software.

Dewey Defeats Edwards... Yet Another
News Screwup

Dewey Defeats Edwards... Yet Another
News Screwup
07/06/2004 01:19 PM
The rush to publish first is making for an awful lot of Dewey Defeats Truman style stories showing up this year. Earlier this year, USA Today published a story on their site with the wrong candidate winning the reality TV show The Apprentice. Last month, a Tampa paper incorrectly reported that their own hometown hockey team had lost the Stanley Cup, when, in fact, they had won. The latest is that the NY Post is running into some trouble for reporting that John Kerry picked Dick Gephardt to be his running mate, when the reality is that he picked John Edwards. What's interesting, though, is that the NY Post has simply deleted the incorrect story from their website, without a notice, explanation or apology. This certainly raises questions about how the press handles mistakes online. It's a running joke in the news media how they publish huge mistakes on page one, and retract them two weeks later in tiny print hidden in the "corrections" section somewhere in the middle of the paper. However, in an age of instant publication (where people can link to you right away), it seems like a more reasonable thing to do is to admit that you were wrong and post an explanation at that location, rather than simply "disappearing" the story and pretending it never happened.

The Modern Era's Dewey Defeats Truman...
Via The Apprentice
04/16/2004 01:11 PM
Maybe it's a sign of the times or a sign of the technology... or maybe someone just pushed the wrong story live. However, in a web-based modern update of Dewey defeating Truman, USA Today is getting some flak for publishing a story saying the losing candidate won The Apprentice finale last night. We've seen similar things with obituaries of still living celebrities showing up in newspapers. It does raise some questions about the process by which newspapers "pre-write" certain stories and what sort of approval process/workflow they need to push them live. Such is life in the world of one-click publishing - where you also have the ability to do a one-click delete... and hope that no one spotted your mistake, made a copy and alerted Reuters.

Textbook Publishers Freaking Out Over
File Sharing
09/20/2004 06:53 AM
Upset that students might actually try to learn something without first paying ridiculous sums for textbooks, some textbook publishers are complaining that students are sharing scanned textbooks over file sharing network. Of course, the reporter had trouble finding a single student who was actually doing this -- and most students seemed to think it would be something of a pain to read a textbook that way. Instead, many believe that this is just the textbook publishing industry's way of explaining away the fact that they keep raising prices every year for no clear reason. Next thing you know, the textbook companies will start going after libraries for "sharing" books for free...

Though its getting almost no coverage here in the United States, there’s an interesting and troubling dispute occurring between China and Japan over events from World War II. For the last few days, protesters in China have been staging marches and pelting the Japanese Embassy in Beijing with bottles and rocks, protesting a new Japanese history textbook that significantly downplays Japanese wartime atrocities during World War II. Predictably, the Japanese deny it and accuse the…
