STL.NET tour and introduction posted

STL.NET tour and introduction posted 08/20/2004 02:21 AM

Stan Lippmann, longtime C++ author and advocate and now central figure in Microsoft's C++/CLI implementation and specification, has posted on MSDN a tour of a new port of the C++ Standard Template Library to .NET, called "STL.NET". It's an interesting introduction to how the new generics support in .NET 2.0 meets the old template idea from C++.

An Introduction to PHP-GTK 08/08/2002 12:59 PM
In this tutorial we will work though the stages of installing PHP-GTK and creating a simple GUI application.

PHP has quickly evolved into one of the fastest growing web scripting languages on the Internet. Serving millions of web sites, PHP has proved itself as reliable, flexible and easy to learn. Many who have programmed with it would agree, that PHP is the ideal scripting language. On the PHP-GTK website, Andrei Zmievski, author of PHP-GTK, demonstrates how the ease and convenience of PHP can be taken to the next level, which is the creation of standalone, cross-platform GUI applications. -- Tiffany Silva

Introduction to XEN 02/16/2004 04:09 PM
With the hype growing to a feverish pitch about the public announcement of Xen, I thought I would share some insight into the knowledge I've had of the language for almost a year and a half. I'm still under orders not to post the video demonstration I have back to my blog (not because the subject matter is Xen, but because apparently the demonstration is internal to Microsoft... I still don't understand this (expecially now that the cat is out of the bag), but it certainly doesn't stop me from sharing some of the information contained in it. This will be an ongoing post as the demonstration is over an hour long, with lots of code samples to boot.

A hacker's introduction to OS X

A hacker's introduction to OS X 01/08/2004 08:34 PM

What is Max OS X by Amit Singh is hands down the best introduction to that operating system I've ever come across. It's aimed at a technical audience, does a very good job of keeping a fair balance balanced when comparing OS X with other operating systems and has taught me a whole bunch of interesting things about the system.

Some highlights:

The rest of the author's site (which bares a striking resemblance to Eric Meyer's classic stylesheet) is worth exploring as well - he has some fascinating notes on advanced Mac programming, a description of his environment of 55 operating systems on one PowerBook and for the hard core programming geeks, 108 solutions to the Towers of Hanoi problem. And if that's not enough, he even has a genuine Donald Knuth reward cheque as well!

As for my own PowerBook, it was due to arrive today but my bank killed the card transaction because it didn't fit my normal buying habits (I'd like to know who's buying habits it would fit). After a series of transatlantic phone calls and the classic statement from HSBC that "you're not supposed to have credit on a credit card" all is well in the world, and the system should arrive tomorrow or Friday. I await its arrival with sticky palms.

Introduction to Judoscript

Introduction to Judoscript 10/27/2002 12:06 PM
JudoScript shall be a powerful programming language that provides all of Java's programmability in a simpler and scripting way, plus other useful features and sweet "syntactic sugar". For many common computing tasks, it would require less coding. The ease and efficiency of coding stems from its syntax and a large number of rich data structures embedded in the language.

It shall be able to script Java objects and methods with few limitations.

For many of today's common application areas, it shall provide an easy, native and intuitive way to specify the tasks, totally oblivious to implementation details. A list of common application areas have been chosen for the first draft. JudoScript will continue to grow to encompass more and more useful application features as natively and intuitively as possible.

It shall be easily extensible, particularly by Java libraries. Ideally, application features can be natively and seamlessly extended by any Java packages.

It shall be fun! In addition to enterprise computing, it shall also natively support entertainment computing. -- James Huang
