Linksys Secures Media Streaming

Linksys Secures Media Streaming 01/05/2005 07:12 AM
A multimedia adapter from Cisco Systems' Linksys Group division will use technology being supported by Intel and several major home electronics vendors to secure content streaming from a PC to a TV or stereo system. The Linksys Wireless-G Media Link, to be announced this week at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is one of a growing number of devices for sending music, video, and photos from a PC to consumer electronics devices around a home.

The new Linksys device will include DTCP-IP (Digital Transmission Content Protection over Internet Protocol), which is designed to allow users to share content among many users in a home while protecting it from neighbors within range of a home wireless LAN, says Rob Crooke, vice president and marketing director of Intel's Desktop Platforms Group.

Clearwire's Non-WiMax Now Non-Useful:
Blocks VoIP, Streaming Media
03/25/2005 05:06 PM
Craig McCaw's Clearwire wireless outfit has received plenty of attention -- mainly for being run by Craig McCaw. Late last year, Intel had to pay Clearwire to convince them to use WiMax (which, still doesn't actually exist) as the core of their wireless offering, as WiMax was proving to be increasingly less than the hype would have you believe. Earlier this month, Bell Canada made a surprise announcement, saying they would provi de VoIP for Clearwire in the US -- giving the Canadian telco a way to enter the US market. Still, it appears the folks at Clearwire haven't been paying attention to the whole "network neutrality" debate or the fact that an ISP has been fined for blocking Vonage. Instead, Clearwire proudly states that they will block any application they don't like -- including non-Bell Canada VoIP and any streaming audio or video offering. In other words, Clearwire's wireless broadband is becoming close to useless, because they want to control what you can and can't do over it. They claim they need to do this "to ensure network performance reliability," but can't explain how it's okay for them to offer VoIP, but Vonage must be blocked. More importantly, if Clearwire is saying they can't have a stable network when people are doing VoIP or streaming media, it certainly raises a lot of questions about the quality of WiMax.

Streaming media company demands patent
fees from colleges
08/10/2004 12:19 PM

Some American colleges and universities received anticipated letters this week from Acacia Media , requesting the payment of licensing fees for streaming media. The firm

has sent letters to dozens of colleges in recent days claiming the schools' use of streaming video in areas like distance learning and video lectures violates company patents. The message: pay up, or risk getting sued.
"Certainly for colleges that do a lot of distance education, this could be a major problem," said Steve Worona, director of policy and networking programs at EDUCAUSE...

Acacia has been campaigning for fees for streaming media, for which it claims several patents as its intellectual property .

Acacia Research Corp. claims patent on

11/10/2003 10:58 PM

Acacia Research Corporation has recently filed notices of infringement with over a dozen colleges and universities over their claim to own the patent on streaming media. According to the company, their patent on Digital Media Transmission (DMT)

involves the transmission and receipt of digital audio and/or audio video content via a variety of means including the internet, cable, satellite, and local area networks.

Acacia's move could be a costly one for universities, as the company is demanding 2% of revenue for courses that use sound and video on the web. While some universities are considering fighting the patent claim in court, others may license the technology from Acacia, joining a variety of Internet radio stations and adult entertainment companies that recently entered into similar deals.

iPod users' broadside at Windows Media

iPod users' broadside at Windows Media 07/14/2004 11:56 AM
Apple's success in transforming its iPod into the market-leading music player appears to have undermined some CD protection technologies based on Microsoft software. Last month Velvet Revolver album 'Contraband' hit number one in the US charts - despite the fact it used copy protection and wouldn't play on an iPod. Cnet reports that the two companies behind the most-used copy protection technologies are "scrambling to create new versions of their technologies that are compatible with Apple's popular digital music player". And their efforts could "ultimately be a setback to recent Microsoft strides into the music business".
