07/20/2004 12:54 PM
Small Town Software announced on Tuesday the release of Time and Budgets, a new application that integrates with Apple's iCal application to supply time and budgeting functions for projects. The software also works with any calendar program that supports WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning), which means .Mac subscribers can use iCal with the online service to seamlessly input data and generate reports that convert time into dollars and cents that can be compared against a project's budget. Available reports in Time and Budgets include time sheets with visual charts, details about time logged in specific phases and tasks, aggregate workgroup feedback and more. Another option can generate e-mail alerts when projects have reached certain financial goals.

My Tax Time Wish

My Tax Time Wish 04/15/2004 09:09 PM

If I could make a wish come true to make my tax time headaches more tolerable, it is the ability to dictate where my tax money goes after I file my tax return.  I want to be able to use a nice GUI application to swoop in, to see how others have allocated their tax money and where it's lacking, and divide up my tax money into areas where I think more money should be spent.

Concerned about the homeless or unemployment?  Drag and drop part of your tax money to the homeless or economic programs.  Angry about the Iraq War?  Don't spend any money on it.  Want to see more tanks?  Drill down into the army budget and spread your bucks on the armored divisions' purchasing budgets.  You want to reward or punish the job FCC has been doing?  Squeeze their budget until they do what you want.

UI-wise, you can select from a large selection of budget configuration packages from political parties or even influential individuals so you don't have to micromanage the federal budget.  So you would select one or select a few and average to start with and then make fine adjustments on the programs you feel strongly about.

Instead of voting on politicians, judges, and policies, direct budgetting allows us to vote with our tax dollars.  Whether the system will work in real life or not, the vision is definitely a satisfying one.  If successful, politicians will be on their knees begging for money for their favorite program as April 15th nears each year.  Who knows?  Maybe everyone will act responsibly.  If you like this idea, just drag-n-drop some donations to the Don Park's Daily Needs box.

With the temperature suddenly 21° (with a 9° wind chill) in NYC, those who haven't succumbed yet to the flu could well be on the verge, including me. Here's some good information from the CDC, Influenza: The Disease. Of course, the most troubling bit was this, "A person can spread the flu starting one day before he or she feels sick." It might be too late for us all!

It's About Time

It's About Time 03/19/2005 02:22 AM

General Motors just announced that the stereo in select vehicles released this year will have a feature I've been wishing for for a long time.

The new radios include an auxiliary channel and front mounted auxiliary input jack, so that an iPod or other audio source can be easily plugged in and played through the vehicle audio system.

How beautiful! All you need is an eighth-inch stereo patch cable to run between your dashboard and your iPod, laptop, CD player, DVD player, or whatever.

Now, how do I get my hands on one of those spiffy-looking Chevy HHR's?

Now Is The Time

Now Is The Time 09/08/2004 01:27 AM
This week my kid’s going off to school for the first time and while it’s been a long time since I last went off to school, there’s something that lingers about the end of summer, start of fall, back to school season, a feeling that it’s time to buckle down and be a little less laid back and get some serious work done. Fortunately, right now is a wonderful time to be at work in our profession, and I just can’t wait for the pace to pick up again...

So I didn't stop with Microsoft as I said I would. I got carried away by conversation with other blogs, etc. But as I'm writing a reply to Robert's comment on my previous post about XAML, I just came to a simple realization.

I suddenly saw that what I was asking is sort of a pointless question. It's interesting to speculate, yes. It's also useless.

Yes, my point was... err... pointless.

When Longhorn ships, we might be able to look at this in a new light. Right now it's complete extrapolation, in this case on my part, guided by what I see and by previous MS behavior. Robert keeps saying (as I understand it) that MS is not out to "kill the web", etc. Many people (and to a degree myself included) think that isn't true, based on previous "attempts". Now, Microsoft may be trying for something different this time, or it might not. Either way, we'll see in a couple of years. In the meantime, talking about the potential market effects of a technology that hasn't yet been finished, running on a platform that won't be released for at least two years, with some components that don't yet exist, is an excercise in futility.

I can avoid jumping the gun by waiting until it is actually released and people start using it for actual applications. Until then, two words should be enough to stop myself going down this road further: "Netscape Constellation."
