I'm happy to
announce that Adam Hertz has
joined Technorati as our VP

of experience as an executive and manager in the software and online
service industries. He has extensive product, technical and
operational experience with a variety of technologies including web
and internet, distributed systems, databases, text indexing and
information retrieval. His application experience includes digital
photography, web portals, mobile services, search, shopping, personal
information management, productivity, email, and community.Prior to
joining Technorati, Hertz was Vice President of Product Development at
Ofoto, the Internet's leading consumer online digital photography

Andrew Anker Joins
Six Apart. My friend and past co-worker Andrew Anker has taken a role at
Six
Apart as EVP, Corp. Dev. This means a lot to me, not only
am I a big fan of both AA and SA, I take it as a sign that SA is
getting serious about building out their a platform to grow as this
nascent industry grows, and that's a good thing. There is tons of work
to be done on both the revenue and product side of blogging, and it's
heartening to to know the team at Six Apart will be on the case.
[John Battelle's

VC joins 6A.
This is a good thing? I guess if you're a SixApart investor -
but we'll have to see what this means to us folks - the end-users,
developers and industry that have seen 6A fall from grace.
Will Andrew (along with the recently West coast ensconed Anil Dash)
be able to pick up the pieces? Is Andrew Anil's boss or vice
versa? What about Barak - how come there was no announcement
about him becoming CEO?
I remember Andrew as the guy at Wired that Dave Winer and I tried
to..... well let's just say - it didn't happen.
Andrew has recently been a VC at one of thsoe firms. It's
hard to tell them apart. So good luck to Andrew and 6A - don't
forget how you got there.
And OH - support FOAF! Oh wait - they do support FOAF
already! Just a little funky. Well I have FULL CONFIDENCE
that 6A will do the right thing - when it comes to FOAF.
Here we go!

Oblix Joins Oracle
Oblix Joins Oracle
03/29/2005 06:33 AMIn an open letter to Oblix customers, Rick Simmons, Vice President of
Oblix inc. announced plans that the company would be merging with
Oracle.
"The union of our two companies will provide an even greater
security solution for our customers ...... the combined strength of
Oracle's worldwide presence and its extensive software and services
business coupled with Oblix's products, people, and vision bring to
the industry an unprecedented ability to build identity into software
infrastructure and applications while continuing to deliver a new
generation of identity offerings"
Oblix is a privately held developer of identity-based security
solutions for heterogeneous computing environments. Originally founded
in 1996, the company is a leading developer of identity management
software that allows web access control including Single Sign On
(SSO), identity administration and user provisioning. Oblix also
provides security and regulatory compliance solutions.
The merger benefits Oracle customers and will provide them with a
complete solution for securely managing identities. Oracle recently
purchased software company Peoplesoft in a bid to maintain it's
presence as a global heavyweight in the industry. It faces increased
competition from the likes of Microsoft who has big plans for identity
management software in the next revision of Windows, codenamed
Longhorn.
Effective today, you can find out more about the merger

Intel Joins 802.11a/g World
Intel Joins 802.11a/g World
08/27/2004 01:30 PMAs expected, Intel announced today that its Centrino 802.11a/b/g chip
will become available in September: The chip will come with updated
software that includes a configuration wizard, updated
troubleshooting, and automated security set up. The software also
includes the most current version of Cisco's extensions so the chips
are compatible with Cisco access points. The new chips will also
support 802.11i. Intel is far behind some others in the industry in
introducing a combined 802.11g and 802.11a chip. Atheros built its
first combined chip nearly two years ago. Still, Atheros regards
Intel's entrance into the market space as good news. "By moving
Centrino to a/g, it will pump up the mass market in the U.S., which
helps us," said Sheung Li, a product line manager for Atheros. He
figures that Intel will grow the market, spurring opportunity for
others at the same time. IDC expects that combined 802.11a/g will
become the dominant Wi-Fi standard by 2006, with 802.11g hitting its
peak in 2005. Intel's entrance into the combined 802.11a/g market,
especially in the notebook space, should help ease the transition away
from 802.11g to 802.11a/g, said Ken Furer, research analyst with IDC.
For now, 802.11a has been largely viewed as technology for business
users in the United States, Li said. But he expects Intel's new chip
to follow a similar story as when Intel began building support for
faster Ethernet into its chips. "People perceived 100 (megabit) as the
high end. Then Intel ships it and now you can't buy 10 (megabit)," Li
said. He expects the added reliability of 802.11a to increase the
types of applications that may be used on Wi-Fi networks. For example,
at a recent Microsoft conference, a Microsoft executive touted its
Windows media center, but recommended that users employ 802.11a
networks instead of 802.11g networks because of the lowered chance of
interference. The upgraded software from Intel will also compete with
software that other chip makers including Atheros also offer. Such
add-ons can offer a needed boost for chipmakers. "The software
provides a way to differentiate and it's a higher margin business in a
market where the price of chips is crashing down," Furer said. As
chips become commoditized, the software allows chipmakers to
differentiate themselves, especially against the very low cost
Taiwanese competitors, he said....
